Under maritime law any abandoned boat becomes the property of whoever finds it. Once it beaches, the rules are different. Still, it's a thought... if someone had lassoed the yacht while still at sea, everything in it would have become booty.
A fucking hunter would survive a sandbank (sandbar) impact. Then again, a Hunter is expected to experience such impacts. Regardless, this light, fragile expensive boat has at least a 7 ft. draft. WTF? "Stuck on Gilligans Isle"
I know someone who lost a J122 just buy running aground on sand in the intracostal waterway...and a J40 with the same issue. Both hit slightly the keel cracked off ans she went down...shew...
@cmlambpsi OK, I've done some research in the other stuff published at the time - that all says it's a J133, would you settle for that? The owner deffo told me on the day that she was a 35 but there you go.
@MegaCantata No. The dead giveaway is the 1.) sliver vent fan on the forward hatch, and 2) the fact that the 122 comes with two small hatches forward of the mast. 133's done come with those... they only have one hatch. Check out your video at :48 and you can clearly see what I see. Then head to the Jboats site and look at the photos of the 122... it's plain as day. Sorry your buddy led you astray. It's a terrible sight.... the video, that is...
@cmlambpsi OK, upon your head be it! It certainly was a terrible sight, as a boat owner myself it almost brought me to tears. I've lived near this beach for years, and I've seen a lot of boats die on it.
@MegaCantata Sorry bro - somebody doesn't have their facts straight. First, J35's don't have sprits - this one clearly does. Second, J35's only have two windows in the cabin top - this has three, and third they don't have 'almost' plumb bows like this little beauty. I've been around plenty of J35's... this isn't one of them.
There was an account of this in one of the magazines. The skipper was attempting to cut through a shallow channel at night in an onshore gale with inexperienced crew. He complained in the article that (a) nobody had ever told him that big waves might reduce the minimum depth and (b) the lifeboat took far longer than the usual ten minutes in the Solent to arrive.
@ Proxi and Pleb. I only teach people to sail who have an IQ, You both obviously do not qualify. I guess his insurance refused to cover. Still ......... my comment stands. DUMB ASSES !!!!
If i remember correctly both of the men on board had Yachtmasters qualifications. They decided to try and cross the margate sands very close to low tide. I also heard that the insurance for the boat did not fully cover the cost to replace it and the 2 men actually had to pay what was left themselves.
Panthablue most keel failures are not because the design failed but because the owner did not take proper precautions with maintaining the keel. They should be checking the torque on the bolts regularly and need to pull the boat out of the water every few years to make sure they aren't rusting (or the keel if it is iron).
Terribly sad. There are too many cases where keels have come off, and lives have been lost. Luckily not this time. Boat builders should really take a closer look at how they can improve the method of attaching the keel to the hull. Using simple keel bolts is really not adeqate for the bending forces that keels can be subjected to!!!!
@Dirkadin snad banks just come mate... even with a sound depth alarm undersail it still would of been to late, its these terribly made jeneanus. i hate them there keels just fall off
After one minute I was thinking what's wrong with this yacht?
But there is no chance to fix it.

This is also a brand new boat. They stopped making J35's in 1992. I'd re-title your video... It's a J122... trust me.

It does not look like a J35. It has a wheel and an asym. Maybe a 109?
