@Chibichibipause Try the Virtual Tabletop on DnD Insider if you can afford a few dollars a month - it's totally worth it. Comes with access to all DnD stuff and materials for 4th edition EVER made - except for campaign settings and such.
Or, you can always do instant messenger. I've run games that way and it works. Or RPOL.net, or Rondak's Portal.

We're all musicians, and in school for some form of art or design (even if we're just in high school), and are just generally really close, and all love storytelling. I'm sad we didn't start before. And we're all SOMEWHAT geeks, concidering we all love tech and such, but we're not the type you'd except to be playing dnd. I really hope dnd gets more attention, because it's simply amazing.

@scotchtapeinasia If you are playing as an adventurer and not DM, then you shouldn't have to worry about it. Most likely your whole group is gaining shared experience and levels together, and your DM will let you know. Each monster has a set amount of experience that it gives.
BUT.......although i prefer the DnD video games..if i were to play the board game..id defo excell as a dungeon master....my dungeons would be incredible lol!...

Theres been times where my friends didn't have dice, miniatures, or hardly a map. We just used our imagination and that was all we needed to stay up for a good 4 hours and play it on-the-fly ^.^
Too much information is never good. I'm running Dark Heresy at the moment and my players have done every mission so far, but avoided doing them in a my intended manner. They split the party into 5 components. My god.
Do minis make the game easier, I think it would be more of a hassle (I can take the work but I'm not very time organised) having to deal with range and maps?

@mikper7 With 4th Edition, I (as DM) have my laptop sitting next to me to reference anything off the DDI compendium (items, monsters, etc), as well as references to maps for me to draw onto the battlemat on the table. Character Builder (old one, not the new online one) loaded incase they decide to visit shops. Currently we're running one of the Modules out of Dungeon (Scales of War), but otherwise I run homebrew.

It will be really dissapointing if the next generation don't play Dungeons and Dragons. Nothing beats the thrill of a game that has unlimited creative potential, where you can choose to do anything imaginable, and learn new things from the choices that other players make. It will be a huge loss to society.
I think if they can transfer the experience well over to a online format that it will have a long future. Right now, I dont think model, books etc sales will increase that much. I dont play other DnD games than those on PC, but since titles like Arcanum and the first Fallout series I have to admit I miss those "less action" oriented rpgs. Where story and interaction was more interesting. DnD does character interaction, because of the DM, better than any game could.
@147brisingr It's the MMO's that kill D&D. Kid's these days are too lazy to roll dice and do the calculations themselves. They'd rather meet a "24 year-old level 41 female half-orc cleric" over 9000 miles away, in the comfort of their own basement instead of building social and math skills and meeting local people who you can verify are who they say they are.

New D&D rule: Obese people cannot play athletic roles such as a fighter, rogue, barbarian, reaver, etc. They may only play non-athletic roles such as clerics and bards. If you let yourself go and became obese in the real-world, you are also obese in D&D land.
well this is my personal opinion, it is true that the DM needs yo know the rules, he must provide just not "random adventures" ive played D&D 3.5 for 6 years, and i really found FUN making plots, involving the players into interpretation, weve laughed, cryed and had fun with that system, and of course applying the rules, i belive that, is more fun to give your players and characters a constant world to live on, than pieces of a world that never ever, has something else to give.
Familiar is good, the funnest mod players have told me is the D&D 4E mod I made based on A New Hope, where they got to have the final fight against Darth Vader and fun was had by all.

I'm 17, my sister is 19, and here friends range from 19-25.
They play D&D 2-3 times per week, with 4-9 hour sessions a time.
I played my first game today (10AM till 9PM :P), and next year I will join their Students Society to play with them :)
So this next generation is playing, and I'm addicted already :)
