Mr. Schiff knows what he's talking about, unlike many of the talking heads on network news (i.e. Communist News Network)! Is he going to run for office next year?
@scottg: Baloney. Deomcrats are call democrats because they believe in mob rule. I don't. I believe in natural rights and liberty and "government is the negation of liberty" -Mises
What he is saying though, is that you would be getting paid more due to your employer not taking your money for insurance. At that point, it is up to free, responsible citizens to purchase a competitive insurance with that money, ultimately driving down costs due to competition.
A flaw that exists with that is group insurance vs individual insurance. Group insurance is more favorable due to pre-existing conditions and better premiums and coverage/benefits (dental, lower premiums, etc.) I do agree that primary care and Rx need to be removed from insurance though to drive those costs down.
I think what you are trying to say is that buying insurance as a group benefits from economies of scale - unfortunately, this is demonstrably untrue. In business, economies of scale work because the actors are spending their own money - they seek to economize capital and resources because it is theirs. In insurance and/or a govt. plan, the parties are disinterested - they don't really care about being economical, even on a large scale - the army's $500 hammers are a classic example of this.
Insurance doesn't profit or charge these rates becuase they feel like it. It is the hospitals and doctors that keep jacking up rates for the services they provide. If the medical providers lowered their rates, insurance would be lowered as well. The reason for high costs starts with the hospitals. Malpractice, unnecessary ER usage, educational costs for physicians, and non-payment are the biggest factors for the high cost to provide medical care. Hospitals waste money to not get budget cuts.
If the government was not taxing you so much and if they weren't printing new money as fast as the printing presses could run (which causes price inflation and robs the value of your earnings), you WOULD have money left over to save. Also, the govt. pushes interest rates down which takes away your incentive to save. I don't know about you, but if savings accounts were offering 6-7% interest, I'd be finding ways to put more away.
The system right now is stacked against you - corporations are given tax breaks to provide health plans. This means, dollar-for-dollar it's cheaper for them to provide $5,000 of health coverage for you than it is to pay you $5,000 extra in salary -so that's what they do. If the corporate tax break was removed or matched by an individual tax credit for health savings accounts, the playing field would be level again. You would see competition reassert itself and prices begin to fall.
Good point gergenheimer. People need to understand the RIGHT NOW the CORPORATIONS/INSURANCE companies are the villians here, not necessarly the governerment. People say they don't want a buracrate getting between then and their doctore well guess what...THAT'S ALREADY HAPPENING!.
These corporations arent only to blame. Business and state should be clearly seperated with laws enforcing this seperation. Many polititians are to blame for being crocked and without morals. Of course this doesnt apply to all of them. Many of them have been poorly educated, or are too stupid to see the ramifications of their actions. And its the people who suffer.
Mussolini defined Facism as state and business combining. If education was better there would be no sheeple.
those companies are mandated to exist because of our last round of "reform" in the 70's when congress mandated PPO's and HMO's. government is always the villain.
I think you missed my point - if it wasn't for the government intruding into the healthcare market the mega insurance companies would be punished by consumers for high costs and poor service and competition would force them to adapt or die. It is precisely the govt. mandates, regulations, special privileges and mountains of red tape that keep competition out and allow these bloated monsters to survive. The problems in our system are 90% because of government meddling, not corporate "greed".
Another way of looking at it if the government stepped out of the way then good companies would punish bad ones by kicking their ass in the market place. The good companies would get the poor ones customers.
No the problem is that government is keeping the greedy (wanting to steal others customers by providing better and cheaper services) from putting bad ones out of bushiness. Instead government has granted an EXCEPTION to the commerce clause of the Constitution and prevents insurance companies from crossing state lines which would lead to an explosion of competition. Instead lazy corporations lobbied Congress to prevent competition which they were happy to do for campaign contributions.
great video, this man is running for office. We should all donate to his campaign. I personally would love to have a man whom understands what makes wealth than one who knows how to squander it.
bet you would have more if the government wasn't taking out social security, state income tax, federal income tax, Medicare, medicaid, and that doesn't even count the fact that your employer has to match those amounts.
If you were getting an additional 30 percent you would have much better options.
and if we all were paying for services with our own money prices would be lower.
heck, if that happened maybe only one parent would have to work. Just like before government got involved
some of us live paycheck to paycheck, week by week, day by day, minute by minute. and we still can't afford food even after paying bills cos of minimum wage or low wages.
its not always cos they spend more than they make, but they don't make enough and costs are too high for everything. don't blame us, blame those who control and regulate.
I blame both. For instance, you'd have more of what you made if the government wouldn't take it.
However, a lot of people live in homes that are too big, cars that cost too much, cloths that are too fancy and credit card bills that are maxed.
I tend to believe that you can make as much money as you want. Using excuses is why some people don't make more... it's not someone elses fault that they don't go to school or trade school or get a second job.
How about the children born into poor enviroments with crime, drugs, violence? Children who doesnt get raised properly or wrongfully? How about the children born with disabilities and mental problems?

He's absolutely right. Everywhere government and more importantly, tax dollars, are involved, the more costly and inefficient it is.
Unfortunately, what is to happen between the time that the gov gets out and the market drives prices down? Gov has run things up so high, that only gov can actually afford it and that's only because they don't have to EARN their money.
I think more people should ask why the cost of health care itself is so high - why the average general practitioner takes home nearly 300,000/yr.
I think we have to focus on the things that drive up the cost of health care - the introduction of money via Medicare and subsidies - tort laws which drive up the level of risk - regulations which establish artificially high standards for care, regulations which make it difficult for new health insurers to compete etc.
I haven't seen anyone address the issue of supply and demand - could it be that there just aren't enough doctors?
I called over sixty doctors in my region acting as if I wanted to schedule a blood test - I said that I did not have a family doctor but was insured, and of those 1/4 were fully booked. The average wait time of those who did accept me was 15.7 days!
well I suppose if your standards are that low, I mean it certainly doesn't reflect a shortage of demand. There was not one doctor that said "sure, what time would you like to stop by?". or "we can take you today if you'd like". That type of response would signify to me that they want new clients. Or that there is an oversupply of doctors.
Sure if I went to the hospital I could get service, but I am looking at it from an economic perspective.
Favorited. Schiff hit the nail on the head. Though he did miss one little detail.
This isn't just an argument about rather or not universal health care is good or bad, it is an argument about rather or not it is constitutional. Even if it were a good idea, our constitution does not allow for this. Ergo it should be a health care AMENDMENT, not a health care act. The government is operating outside of its constitutional boundaries, and some one should jump them for it.
Your "Free Market Health Care" failed buddy. Name one country that doesn't have cost controll of for profit insurance for primary care?

75% open. 2 weeks isn't bad for an appointment... its not like you needed it. Im sure you could have gotten in next day if you did.

well I suppose if your standards are that low, I mean it certainly doesn't reflect a shortage of demand.

I like the edit job on this. It's probably people with very serious ADD who have problems grasping the content.

your comment is way too long, - word of advice; use more cuss words.

The government is operating outside of its constitutional boundaries, and some one should jump them for it.

comforting? is that what you're trying to gain? Ron Paul cries out of his lungs just so we can decide what is true not what is comfortable.
