I'm one of the unfortunate student's who the school system refuses to teach patriotism. They don't teach the Star Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful and they don't make you salute the flag. To question the patriotism of either diminishes those offerings to Liberty.

I think these people, dispite being celebrities, were hurting too. It was their country that was attacked as well as yours and mine. Like a lot of us, they wanted to help, provide comfort and seek solice for themselves too.
They did what they do best. I would venture that a few people who saw this were conforted by this. And I think that was the point, celebration, comfort, solice.

I'm one of the unfortunate student's who the school system refuses to teach patriotism. They don't teach the Star Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful and they don't make you salute the flag. I love my country but I fear what will happen if we ever need to depend on my generation. I've heard 'Fuck America' more times than I've heard people say they love her.

Look, I love the United States of America, and if I ever had to, as Winston Churchill said, "fight in the hills and in the streets" to defend it, I would in a heartbeat.
But, I am getting tired of people making a big deal of taking hats off and standing up at "God Bless America" or "America The Beautiful." The only song one has to show that respect to is the National Anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner," or, as we in Baltimore prefer to call it, "The Defense of Fort McHenry."

It was more of a compliment of someone from whom I least expected a show of reverence.
On the other hand, the song does invoke the name of God several times. So, maybe the "big deal" about taking hats off comes from those of the Christian perspective:

But in the law it is in the first amendment to keep church from state, that means keep all church related things such as God from governmental issues such as money, the pledge, and court. The founding fathers never put that phrase on our coins or bills. It was done in the 50's, and few opposed it for fear of beaing labeled an "athiestic communist". That phrase was never part of the original money ot the US. It is a recent addition.

It hasn't stood up to the test of time as well as I'd hoped, but this was one of the most hopeful and healing moments of the immediate reaction to 9/11 for me, and I wish we had taken that hope and worldwide love and made a new commitment to peace and reinforced ourselves as an honorable nation worthy of the respect and admiration of the rest of the world, making us more capable of working hand in hand to improve the lot of everyone on the planet.
