Portugal was far from fighting against the world. It only fought spain barely and napoleon, and portugal's participation in ww1 was nearly unexistant. Spain fought austria, france, britain, portugal, USA, against its own colonies, the netherlands, the ottomans, morocco, argelia, tunisia, tripoli, granada, even russia in ww2... so you see, the title is a litle overexagerated. Portugal didnt fight their colonies, at least brazil and the african ones, which were the more important ones. The onbly fights im aware of were in timor. The english and french, each a single time. Spain fought them continuedly for 300 years.
The Portuguese did fight the Dutch, several times, to protect their colonies. They didn't just help. They fought the Germans in WW1. They fought the Moors in the Iberian peninsula during the reconquista (the only reason Spain fought them longer was because they took longer to defeat them). They fought the french several times, not just in the Napoleonic wars. They fought the Ottoman empire and other Mamluk sultanates for control of the Indian ocean as well as the Chinese.
The Portuguese did fight the Moors in Africa to take control of several strongholds, and I don't even know how you can say Portugal didn't fight it's African colonies when we were engaged in a bloody war against them for more than 10 years.
I would advise you to research a bit of history before making such claims.

The heir to the throne of Isabel was the son of John II (Portuguese king), so he was the heir to both thrones, but unfortunately he died when he felt from his horse (he was a spectacular knight, so most likely he was murdered at the order of his grandmother - Isabel)

@asneirinhaportugal I am Cuban...not Brazilian. Brazil has bad parts too but overall the country is doing much better than Portugal. With the recent North African uprising (Morocco, Algeria, Libya...there will be even more muslims in Portugal. That's disturbing). When I was in the capital, there were a lot of Portuguese immigrants acting like they own the place in Brazil. Portugal was far from fighting against the world. It only fought spain barely and napoleon, and portugal's participation in ww1 was nearly unexistant. Spain fought austria, france, britain, portugal, USA, against its own colonies, the netherlands, the ottomans, morocco, argelia, tunisia, tripoli, granada, even russia in ww2... so you see, the title is a litle overexagerated. Number 2, not to make this a contest but Portugal fought the the Moors in the Iberian Peninsula, the Spanish, the Ottomans, Morocco, the French, the Dutch, it's own Colonies, the Germans, the Indians, the Mamluks, the Chinese, the English, and probably more. And lastly, Portugal could fight Spain and indeed won several times. Otherwise we would have been annexed like the other Iberian Kingdoms.

@jocamar15 fighting the moors. Spain fought the moors even in africa, what portugal nearly didnt do. they fought them in the mediterranean in their home, the bosforus. Portugal did not. Portugal didnt fight their colonies, at least brazil and the african ones, which were the more important ones. The onbly fights im aware of were in timor. The english and french, each a single time. Spain fought them continuedly for 300 years.

The Portuguese did fight the Dutch, several times, to protect their colonies. They didn't just help. They fought the Germans in WW1. They fought the Moors in the Iberian peninsula during the reconquista (the only reason Spain fought them longer was because they took longer to defeat them). They fought the french several times, not just in the Napoleonic wars. They fought the Ottoman empire and other Mamluk sultanates for control of the Indian ocean as well as the Chinese.

The Portuguese did fight the Moors in Africa to take control of several strongholds, and I don't even know how you can say Portugal didn't fight it's African colonies when we were engaged in a bloody war against them for more than 10 years.

@1111hola Portugal fought the moors in Africa before spain, the indian ocean was once our private sea. almost all of the coast of africa was ours. we, with the english, were the first to defeat napoleon, we fought the russians to in te 19th century. We were so powerfull that we are the few countrys to have an embassy in the vatican city.

@nmgscp well to be fair regarding history, Portugal was about to "conquer spain" in the same way even before as spain did in 1580. The heir to the throne of Isabel was the son of John II (Portuguese king), so he was the heir to both thrones, but unfortunately he died when he felt from his horse (he was a spectacular knight, so most likely he was murdered at the order of his grandmother - Isabel)

With the recent North African uprising (Morocco, Algeria, Libya...there will be even more muslims in Portugal. That's disturbing). When I was in the capital, there were a lot of Portuguese immigrants acting like they own the place in Brazil. It's funny how Brazilians are treated poorly in Portugal but you guys come to Latin America as rejects in your country.

Nonetheless, by the time Portugal joined the Crown there was already a common conscience of being a country among Spanish people. Both Portugal and Spain share a common past (Romans, Goths, Arabs) but after the end of the Reconquista the Portuguese went on to create a separate nation, while the other territories joined and originated Spain under Castilian pre-eminence.

I'm an American and just found out that a lot of my heritage is from portugal so lately I've been trying to find a lot of information on the country and it's history but I'm not having a lot of luck. This video sure was interesting and it seems like the portuguese really got screwed over by spain?
So I have to ask if anyone here is portuguese and speaks english, What's it like in portugal? and what do they think of americans?

@pinktiger3 I am of a portuguese background Both my parents were born in portugal but i was born here in aus but i still have quite strong roots with portugal constantly goin there every two yrs cause of family n houses we have there so i do no d lifestyle over there all i can say is dat it is very different to the life style u n i live Its very casual n very family oriented. I suggest u try go there sumtime n actually experiance cause its worth it :) as for its opinion on americans i wouldnt no

@pinktiger3 Hey there i'm portuguese, i have alot of family in the US, in order to answer your question. Life here in Portugal is casual, religious, it's culture a lil bit underdeveloped, kinda people not many things besides that. What we think of americans is relative, in neighbourhood people have nothing against americans because over 70 % of them has lived in the USA that's all i know

@pinktiger3 im portuguese, most of portuguese speak english, spanish only speak spanish lol and we think most americans r jackasses .. and btw go to wikipedia and search about portuguese history u will find a LOT :D

@TiagoOnTour Most portuguese speak english, true but they barely speak it, spanish speak english aswell, that has nothing to do with the countries but with education, i don't think most americans are jackasses you need to learn speak for yourself, there is an enormous portuguese community in the USA that part of my family belongs to, wikipedia has no good info, it tells nothing about the discovery of the Sea of Labrador and Terra Australis Incognita ( Australia ) Portugal discovered those places
