My cats love cardboard boxes too and one of them even tries to reshape it by knawing on the corners. Something she only does while the dogs watching.

Indeed. The thing is a few years ago i bought my dog a nice basket (it wasn't plastic as I know some dogs don't like the smell) and made her a large cushion out of old bed clothes and a quilt and she'd rather sleep in a tatty cardboard box. That'll teach me.

Haha, the same would probably happen with my dogs. Like you say, it's probably the smell...

I don't know about children, but for the dog it's because it's warm and draught free. Children are just weird...
