God loved Jacob by giving him eternal life in exchange for taking on responsability of his brother/murders therefore living hell/eternal life.. Because what made her love him in the first place: his relentlessness / obsession to fix her, became too hard to bear when it was about others. As a doctor, you have to be able to let go sometimes. You cannot fix everyone, and as a partner it can be hard to watch someone you love become so selfless over total strangers. Call it a refusal to witness his self-destructive behaviour.

#1 That little girl is Emma, who with her brother Zack, was one of the Tailies, and ends up with Cindy and the Others. If this would have been included, it would have tied Emma and her apparent psychic abilities in with Walt, and why the Others want the kids.

#2 This sequence was one of the most spoiled things before season 3 aired... a few different people saw the filming, and reported about it online.
