  • The part at 6:42 destorys me with its beauty!

  • Sublime!!! Rachmaninov live again!.

  • Fantastically beautiful...

  • WOW, i dont even want to say i played this piece. Nikolai just killed it. wonderful interpretation

  • Merci! You are the best, your music and your heart.

  • Compared to the other pieces in the Moments Musicaux, the Andantino is performed the least, probably because it's the most deceptively difficult one in the set. This performance is excellent. Lugansky brings out the descending and ascending chromatic lines very clearly. Another version worth listening to is Vladimir Ashkenazy's. Toward the end, the main melody is hidden within the filigree of the right hand. Ashkenazy brings it out amazingly well while Lugansky does not. So difficult to achieve!

  • beautiful

  • I love you Nikolai!

  • Beautiful interpretation. I'm going to see him perform Rach 3 in a couple days :-)

  • Amazingly well played! I shall check him out further and real soon. TY my friend James.

  • paul, this is my 1st time lesitening to this pianist, so wonderful, and romantic, many thanks for your share. TY

  • Beautifully performed! A gem! TY!

  • One of my favourite pianists of all time.

  • Rachmaninoff was a pure genius to be able to come up with such awe-inspiring melodies...

  • Very lyrical beautiful and special...

  • Gorbachev was here.

  • Светлая грусть.

  • Probably one of the greatest pianists alive and no comments ?

  • yes man, you're right

  • Perhaps that's a show of his- Lugansky's- geius; the music is simply unadulteraded Rachmaninov with no performer ego/show off-factor involved, so no-one even thinks about the actual performer, simply the music.

The combination of Lugansky and Rachmaninov is terrific, and if I were religious, I would think that they were both blessed by God.

That should be effusive enough to make up for the previous silence!

  • If you wanna hear another amazing pianist that plays Rachmaninoff extremely well, listen to Vladimir Ashkenazy.

  • Hi Alon nice to hear from you. Yes Ashkanasy is brilliant as is Berman, Volodos, Gilels and Horozitz all is the same bucket for my opinion. Lugansky whilst the youngest achieves and amazing level of interpretation and musicality with EVERY note so clearly defines and no overly heavy dramaticsand use of the pedal to accentuate. Nicolai reigns supreme in my view. In fact its all personal preference at this level dont you think. ?

    Just my humble view.

  • I would have to agree with you that he has mastered a tremendous amount at his age. For my taste I think Ashkenazy ranks supreme, but we all have our opinions. Lugansky is still an amazing pianist.

  • I am with you!

  • agree. so do Richter and Volodos, though I prefer Richter and Ashkenazy because they do not emphasise the musical fireworks of rachmaninoff too much, which is something Volodos tends to do. it would be interesting to have a recording of Volodos playing all the preludes. I do like his moment musical no.2 very, very much. The moment musicaux are excellent for a pianist like Volodos, the preludes excellent for Richter and Ashkenazy (both of them recorded them), but that, of course, is my opinion ;)

  • Ah yes! He's one of my favorites playing Rachmaninov, other than Rachmaninov himself.

  • @AlonPianist I know Vladimir Ashkenazy's grandson. He's an incredible guitarist, just as his grand father is one of my favourite pianists out there :) Lucky to have him in my band!

  • @AlonPianist Agree whole heartedly. So many are fixated on Horowitz, and Gilels as if they were the only pianists ever. Listen to Ashkanazy Prelude 23-2....just awesome.

  • @busylifemeto Askanazy is such a good interpreter of Rachmaninoff.

But the reason why everyone including me thinks that Horowitz is the best interpreter of Rachmaninoff was because he actually knew him personally.

  • @tjtheplay I am best friends with my Golf Pro but I am an individual and a very different STYLE :)

  • @busylifemeto Yeah but in golf, you don't try to play like how the gold pro intends to play do you?

    I don't think I worded that right, did I?

  • @tjtheplay Yeah maybe but we had some fun :) At the end of the day between these great artists is a very fine line dont you think ? I mean for Rachmaninoff I often have a favourite artist for the piece, For eg, Prelude 23-2 I love Ashkanay, he owns this one, however 23-5 I feel Ashkanazy rushes it. Listen to Lugansky play Chpoin Nocturn 27-2.

Now ther Cadneza in the Rach-3 is Bermans IMHO. No one projects the power and dynamics Berman achieves. The common denominator is we all love music.

  • @busylifemeto "The common denominator is we all love music"

    Yup!

  • @busylifemeto you need to hear vladimir horowitz. lugansky ist a great pianist no doubt but .....

  • @MrLeofabian See my comment from 2 years ago, Horowitz is doubtless an amazing pianaist but at this level its personal choice and with the pianisy and what composer they play. For Rachmaninoff Vladimir Ashkanazy, Berman and Lugansky have a preferred style and Gilels is no slouch either. I just have an issue with those that get hung up totally on Horozitz as the "only" pianist.

  • @busylifemeto You got Gilels right and don't forget Rachmaninov himself and Horowitz. Ashkenazy's is good, I have CDs of him that I play all the time. Sorry, Berman and Lugansky are maybe in the junior varsity and keep trying, maybe they'll get there.

  • @sammarco02 Sorry my friend, have to disagree with you as do many critics. Yes I love Ashkanazy, he is here in Sydney my home town. No doubt that Horozitz was great BUT not GOD. Rachmaninoff was one of the most amazing composers of all time but it does not follow he followed as well as a Pianist. Its very much down to personal preference when Pianists are in this league. How much have you listened to of Berman, one of the greats

  • @sammarco02 Disagree totally

  • @MrLeofabian I agreee entirely, in some cases I prefer Ashkanazy, like his Prelude 23-2 just outstanding. Richter may be slightly better technically in some areas BUT Ashkanazy reigns supreme on this piece.
