Damn... this brings me back when I was 9 and riding in the back seat of my grandma and grandpas car on a joyride with my little sister. I'm 23 now. I grew up on this shit. My mom was young (had us at a young age) and listened to recent shit (the 90s music back then), but my grandparents introduced us to this magnificence. Still today I'll jam to some oldies shit while im cleaning the house. and this is coming from a black girl who head bangs to heavy metal. lmao.
@Notic3 Oh yeah! I was lovin' this stuff since long before you were born kiddo, (I saw your pic). I grew up in So. Calif. in the '60's. We bought these records by the bucket load and loved all of the Motown, Stax, Chess, Soul, etc. music. A lot of it that we had no idea, (and would not have cared) what color the artist was! Some of this stuff still gets me a bit misty eyed for the great old days. The sixties were just the best damn time for popular music!
@Notic3 ....o.k. r u serious??? grew up to this and got picked on for it..knew every one of these songs..
born in S.C. but raised in Illinois..and being a 50's baby made it hard on me, but i never stopped speaking what i felt...beatings i got could not stop me...............
@Notic3 Must be millions all over the world! I moved to Detroit in 1966 from CA (surf, surf, surf) and fell in love with The Temptations, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson, Supremes, anything I could get my hands on that smacked of this talent. Oh yeah! I'm a German-Irish-Hungarian-Czechoslovakian -- all American -- and I LOVE this song!!
@Notic3 What difference does it make whether you are white, black, purple or green. Good music is good music. I'm white...grew up in the 60's and 70's and I believe that is when the best music was produced by both black and white artists. Your question is racist.
You betcha. I grew up on Motown. Too me David Ruffin was the greatest R&B pop singer ever. I still emulate his style in my performances. I learned a lot from him, Marvin, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles.
The Temps are one of the best, but with James Jamerson, on the bass, aong with the oreo cookie, Guitar and PApa Zita, pistol allen. seriously, the fun k bros made anyone sound like gold. everytime. i ask you name one crappy Motown hit. no way.. no how..

I grew up in detroit area during the great early motown years. this song was a favorite of mine . seen the supremes, temps, and tops, on the same bill at the state fair in 1966. the place was jam packed!
John. Thanks for posting this - simply their best.. Motown 1964 - 1968 south-east London clubs and radio stations. Another time, whose memories and sound live on with us.
how come this well written motown classic has such little recognition, its a temptations masterpiece in arrangement and delivery. The harmonics and string playing is ooooooohhhh.
My FAV-O-RITE Temptations song of all time!!! 55 yrs old here, grewup in Chicago Ill listening to Herb Kent on WVON-AM. when things aren't going right, this song helps a lot!
Great song, Great group I remember when I first heard this song, I was 14 visting my cousins in Philly, WDAS played it and I couldn,t get the sound out of my head!!!!!
i didnt no the Tempts did this first. i was listening to Luther do this and someone suggested that a comparison should be made between this version and luther's. well im biased to luther,. he's my favorite singer of all time in any genre of music. but this is a nice version by the Tempts. i like it. thanks for posting this.
This song is a like foreshadow of Ruffin's career after he leaves the Temps.
Ruffin sounded best with the Temptations. I'm not denying his voice, he just sounds empty after he left. He's trying to carry the whole world on his shoulders and...when you have crack coursing through your blood basket it's just impossible.
As my life approaches its later stages, I am so very grateful to have had experienced some of the best music produced by man such as this masterpiece, thank God for the memories..
As my life approaches its later stages, I am so very grateful to have had experienced some of the best music produced by man such as this masterpiece, that God for the memories..
Being a Native Detroiter..Nothing like Motown..and Nothing compares to the Temptations..they always make you feel good..even the saddest song by them..makes you smile" cause those were the days" when I was young..growing up hearing it..and now playing it at my own home..remembering My parents listening to them! Motown Rocks! Nothing like it..even in other countrys..they love our Music"
One critic noted that Smokey made this, lyrically, the reverse of "My Girl," and both songs start out with a weather report: With love, bad weather isn't even noticed, without love, the most beautiful day of sunshine is worthless. The work the group did with Whitfield is towering and great, but excuse me if I'm forever vulnerable to the clever, romantic love songs they did with Smokey. David's performance here is on a par with a Garbo movie: no fool should remake it and dare risk comparison.
Me and Michael Jones, 1965 the year I became his girlfriend and we always danced off this song. Those were our good old days with good memories, I became his wife we were married for 29 year and then in 1996 God Love him more and took him home to live with him. When I hear songs from the groups of the 60's 70' 80's I remember Me and Michael Jones, Forever and a Day Me and Michael Jones. My children say I have a story for any song from the 60's cause those were the years when music was good.
@killawon123 That's a beautiful story...thank you for sharing...that's how the 60's were..if you were there and grew up with all that music, you never forget those special times.
One of my favorites too. The Temptations were the greatest group ever (1964-1968) especially. No one can match Eddie or Melvin. Paul was great and David too. David was extremely versatile. He could sing this song, You'll Lose a Precious Love, and then do something like "Ain't too Proud to bet, Sorry is a Sorry Word, He Who Picks a Rose and I could never love another, then go back to My Girl and It's growing and sound great in all of them.
This song has nothing to do with tone and changing tone David sang the same way all the time except on some of the songs he was younger his voice matured but not much.
Smokey's masterpiece, & David's finest vocal, ever. My all-time fav by the Fabulous Temptations. I was 18 y/o, in the Summer of '65, & I fell in love with this the 1st time I heard it. Wolfsky9
Amazing what Mr. Gordy did to keep his acts 'humble' like packaging their own product and sending them out. Too bad Mr. Gordy didn't drink from that same well of 'zam zam'. Lot of sadness in all this magnificence. Much love and respect to the studio musicians, the FUNK BROTHERS.
@ump1951 There's a movie/documentary that came out in 2002 called Standing in the Shadows of Motown. All about the Funk Bros and their contribution to all the great music that you think of when you hear the word "Motown". I wrote a paper on it in college (because the Temptations are pretty much my fav. group) and I received an A on it! Well anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that this documentary was one of the best attempts I have seen that properly acknowledged the input of the Funk Bros.
@blqceaser Howdy! Hey I saw a "thang" on TV a couple of weeks ago about The Funk Bros. It was made in 2008 I think and was based on a book about them. I can't remember the author or the name of the book but I think the TV thing was about two hours long and I think it was on the "old movie channel" (AMC?) It was great and I would pay money to see it again!
one of those songs you re-live from the past. so many times you recall it and the memories of losing a love. think of how it would be if.... and now you live for today and your life goes on with someone else and still think back to those days. thanks
Those were the days, the 60's, you don't hear these Motown ones much now do you? thanks to everyone who commented, I've got a large number of forgotten ones from the vaults to play soon, so please watch out for them? JOHN
@ToeIn2194 So true and unfortunately we might never see/hear music/bands like The Tempations ever again. For some idiotic reason, the execs at certain record companies seem to think that rap crap is actually music....I really miss the old days.......
yup im 12 too and i've watched the Temptations movie more than 20 times and my dad is like damn u watch that movie alot lolz i practically knoe all the words ahah damn im in love Teh Temptations! Forever!
One of the best "heart broken" songs ever! In my opinion, The Temptations was the best male singing group ever, black or white, rock or pop,r&b or whatever category you want to name. I did not really start to appreciate them until after their popularity had waned and the real group had disentegrated.Motown had such an astounding assemblage of talent. There was nothing else like Motown.I remember looking at poor Eddie Kendricks at his viewing and thinking he looked like a 90 year old man. Sad.
"Fantastic" is too mild a term to discribe this.God blessed David Ruffin with a voice, that in my opinion, was a once in a lifetime that I have seen. Combined with the Temptations, and the wounderful instrumental backing....you have MAGIC!!!!
Love the temptations, one of the greatest groups to eva grace music itself. I know that songs such as "My Girl" and "Just My Imagination" are probably their more noted, but this is my favorite Temps song. Also, gotta admire the great Luther Vandross for his ill remake of the classic.
I beg to differ with you, but that is the incomparable David Ruffin singing the lead on this one. Paul, a great vocalist in his own right sang baritone. David sang tenor. Just listen to the ache in his voice, that is definitely David. This my all time favorite song!!
Actually, that's David Ruffin on lead with a different tone from his usual tracks. David was a "dynamic" performer and unlike other singers, he could change his tone and vocals up to make it fit for a specific song.
Thanks for your comment john my fav group i did have an old black and white clip of them singing my baby with david ruffin singing lead but you tube took it off so if you find it would you send it to me. thanks eileen.
I will certainly send you the clip if I see it Eileen, but if You Tube has taken it off (due to copyright) it will be difficult, they should leave them on as it will publicise how good they are, right? I would buy good sounds wouldn't you?
Hi john thanks for your reply it must be of copyrights they where great clips but you tube has taken them off which is a crying shame its so much better to see them singing ye lets hope they return them and this is also one of my favs.
Hey Reggie - What do you think? From a Michigan guy, its the under the radar classic from the 60's. Pick #1, although not necessarily my #1. Great post. Thank you.
Despite his personal problems, David Ruffin was the guy with the most soulful voice at Motown. He perhaps overstepped the mark (according to the film!) but was the best lead singer The Temps ever had, and this song is just so good, his singing makes you feel the pain in the words of the song.
I do love the Temptations and also this song. Another great tune of the Temptations. And its always good to hear Davids amazin voice...just love it. Thanks 4 posting!

Sad.

Nobody could touch these fella's on the
harmonies.

The first time I heard this song was as a little kid with Luther Vandross singing it. It's like two different songs. Both are awesome!
Conquerer1000 2 years ago
"Fantastic" is too mild a term to discribe this.God blessed David Ruffin with a voice, that in my opinion, was a once in a lifetime that I have seen. Combined with the Temptations, and the wounderful instrumental backing....you have MAGIC!!!!
U4Know2 2 years ago 2
David Ruffin & Levi Stubbs were the best.

Love the temptations, one of the greatest groups to eva grace music itself. I know that songs such as "My Girl" and "Just My Imagination" are probably their more noted, but this is my favorite Temps song. Also, gotta admire the great Luther Vandross for his ill remake of the classic.

isn't that David's voice that comes in at 2:00...Paul was good but David's vocals were much better in my opinion
djmane1 2 years ago
Everybody - Paul Williams is singing this, not David Ruffin - I love David's voice but let's give Paul his credit. Bless his soul.
christianbdavis 2 years ago
I beg to differ with you, but that is the incomparable David Ruffin singing the lead on this one. Paul, a great vocalist in his own right sang baritone. David sang tenor. Just listen to the ache in his voice, that is definitely David. This my all time favorite song!!
ck610 2 years ago 3
Actually, that's David Ruffin on lead with a different tone from his usual tracks. David was a "dynamic" performer and unlike other singers, he could change his tone and vocals up to make it fit for a specific song.

I truly love this song! It has special meaning for me esp since I'm from the hometown of Eddie K. & Paul Williams Sr.

The 60's were certainly a wonderful time to be a teenager who was into music. Everyday I'd listen to the radio and hear a new sound or a new artist.
Motown, British Invasion, Ballads, Girl Groups, Garage Bands, local groups from Milwaukee and Chicago. I need a time machine set for the 60's

Thanks for your comment john my fav group i did have an old black and white clip of them singing my baby with david ruffin singing lead but you tube took it off so if you find it would you send it to me. thanks eileen.
anfieldroad2005 3 years ago
I will certainly send you the clip if I see it Eileen, but if You Tube has taken it off (due to copyright) it will be difficult, they should leave them on as it will publicise how good they are, right? I would buy good sounds wouldn't you?
JOHN

He sure was the most soulful and this track is amazing ... thanks for posting
Margandy 3 years ago 4
Despite his personal problems, David Ruffin was the guy with the most soulful voice at Motown. He perhaps overstepped the mark (according to the film!) but was the best lead singer The Temps ever had, and this song is just so good, his singing makes you feel the pain in the words of the song.
