flip flop finishhh, elevatersh, graphiksh. damn i wish i had his job. billy cant even go through his own rig? the error of the bigshby is over for ushh
love this tech, you can see him on the texas live dvd :) what I like about guitar tech like eddie is that he's not just a cable and string boy, he's a skilled luthiers/repairmen. that bench looks like two guitar went through a fret surgery just before the interview started. :)
Why does he want all the guitars to sound the same? I wonder why he even switches guitars if the rig is set up to change the eq to make teles sound like les pauls?
@swanpond14 no two guitars will play the same on the same EQ. it's actually pretty simple, almost everybody aims at their signature sound and they wanna keep it, not deteriorate it. he doesn't want to change the character, only the color. if you listen closely to their live recordings you hear that his teles have much hotter pickups than gretsches and LPs.
@AmuseMe543 He used too! Until he had a conversation with BB king or somebody that told him otherwise...its in the Billy gibbons xmas issue of Guitar World.
I like this guy. I never knew they made 7 gauge strings. 8's are the smallest I have seen. And that comment about cables, right on! That is a bullshit marketing scam to sell naive people $100 thirty foot cables. There are some really crap cables, but once you get a good enough one, STOP right there. No need to go more expensive.
One of the more interesting videos on YouTube and some rude drum tech couldn't cut the shit until the interview was done. I honestly had to stop watching 'cause of that douchebag.
Billy really should get rid of all the crap and plug straight into an amp with one of the Pearly Gates Gibson in my opinion. Remember those days Billy?
@1952Telecaster ..one of the Pearly Gates he says....how bout using the original pearly and fuck everything else....i hate what this world has become...
@leeportcam I'm thinking that he uses the real Pearly Gates for recording. Its getting old and worn out and theres no real need to take it on the road. But whats with all the rack shit? guitar, plug, amp.....and crank it man. Oh, and while you're at it, put some 10 gauge strings on your guitar.
@1952Telecaster i am sure he will listen to you!!!!!!! go back into your basement and play as fast as you can!!!!! fuck you!!!!!!! unmusical musicians are funny!!!!!!!!
Why take so many differen't guitars on tour if their signals are all electronically modified to sound the same as his Les Paul 'Pearly Gates?. I understand he wants that unmistakable Billy G... ZZ Top sound, but what's the point? For show? Love ZZ Top but come on Billy... 007's strings and hollowed out guitar's you can easily pick up with a couple of fingers??? Man Up Billy! Wow! what a wuss!
@Avalanche1368 dude. hes a legend. hes allowed to do whatever he wants with a 40 year career behind him. and gain-wise maybe for a certain song he likes the way a certain guitar plays but wants it to sound a certain way.
@sbosuna Yes he can. Question... if he has 450 guitars at the warehouse/ studio, how many friggin guitars do you think he has at his home?? 500? 1000? more?? Probably could do an episode of "Hoarders" on him. Still think he is getting wimpy with the dental floss strings and routered out guitars, but hey that's just my opinion and it's his equipment...but come-on, my 102 year old grandmother could strap-on and shred on one of Billys, built for wusses guitars.
@Avalanche1368 built for wusses guitars, I laughed so loud... Its incredible how you still hear these kind of empty ignorant comments... its all about the sound you want to achieve, is like Mike Stern using a yamaha pacifica, he said it once when got asked why not gibson or fender, and he said he just likes the sound... you set the way you want to sound, not "to look good" that's the very first mistake pal... your grandma could also lick Billy's crack also, just saying
@Avalanche1368 I saw an interview with him a few days ago where he was asked why he didn't use 11s anymore. He said he was backstage several years back and asked BB King if he still used thick strings to which BB replied that "it is dumb to use heavy strings, it's in the touch not the strings and that you are just making more work for yourself." Also said he only used heavy strings because that was all they had back then. BG said he wasn't in a position to argue with a King.
@meverhart1102 He's an Icon and can use whatever he wants.......,but 7's?? hollowed out guitars??? Ya don't see Jimmy Page taking a router to his Les Pauls and he has a good five years on Billy. BB King is 86 and I'd bet he dosen't play 7's... Man up BILLY!! This is ZZ Top! not ZZ Light! Love the guy but when you look at the gauge of his strings and the weight of his stage guitars he is playing the equivalent of a Daisy Rock. Ernie Ball was making 8's & 9's back in the early 70's
@Avalanche1368 Wow. I'm not sure how you rate guitarists but the gauge of their strings and the way they set up their guitar sounds is probably not the way to go, unless you're a huge rock star. What you've said is some of the most shallow crap I've ever heard. Style is achieved by doing things differently than others, not by emulating heroes.
It's not how you get the sound. It's the sound itself. Grow up junior and find your own sound.
@DukeStarbuckle Did you even read my comment or are you completely lacking cognitive and comprehensive skills? I never "rated" Billy's guitar abilities. In fact I think he's a great guitarist. I wouldn't of been checking out his gear on YT if I thought otherwise Still routering out your guitar's neck and body so the guitar is light as a feather and playing with 7's is just plain wimpy!. What' the rockstar, style, sound and junior ramblings all about? Please seek help soon!!
@Avalanche1368 I guess when you've owned and played as many guitars as he has and toured as much as he has then you can tell all of us about your heavy duty experience and just what the definition of "Wimpy" is. Right now I consider the definition to be a guy who is not a rock star making uninformed commentary on the guitars that he's never played who belong to someone he's never met. Sound familiar?
@Avalanche1368 dude. does it matter what strings he uses? does it matter how heavy his guitars are? hes a great guitarist and he has things the way he likes. it's all personal preference. the tone is in the hands. i use 11s and 12s cause thats what i like and because i play heavy. and this is coming from a 15 year old kid...
@Avalanche1368 It's not the diameter but the weight that counts. Take a set of Billy's strings cut three inches out of them and pop them on a jewelers scale and they probably weigh more that some larger diameter strings. Billys strings are based on Dunlop's Jazz stings which are compression wound so sound heavier. As for Page back in the day he made up sets with an 8 Banjo string.
@Avalanche1368 Do you have any idea how much a '59 Les Paul weighs? It's around 15 pounds. After about 2 hours of guitar playing, it digs into your neck. My grandad has one. Another reason that he might use another guitar that looks like Pearly Gates is because PG has a lot of memories and he doesn't want anything to happen to it. Plus he's rich and what the beard says always goes.
It's been more than 30/40+ years since The Rev. used a peso/coins as "picks".... or @ least since he used them live. Not sure if Vic Mason from Mojave would be flattered or "insulted" hearing the Scorpion amp is like a HiWatt- that amp sounds more like an old Marshall plexi than anything. It does old Van Halen very well & far better than other boo-teek amps can. I really like Billy's use of the Rockman in the mid-late '80s- I wonder if he set up a "Rough Boy"-sounding patch on those JMP-1s...
I don't care what anybody says I heard him and so him and I can tell a difference
He stumbled upon a mic cord cover in Becon Theater NY in the middle of solo his both hands went of the guitar for 15 seconds at least support himself against the floor with one hand and regain balance with other .... the solo went went on and than he tried to cover it up by demonstrating he can play without picking like I don't know the difference
@groovebrew i dare say, a guy that's spent about 20 years as guitar tech for people like billy gibbons and aerosmith may know better than you. personally i don't think a mega expensive pedal is any better than an average cable.
@fuzzyshan well the guy's resume means nothing, the difference in higher-quality power, audio and signal cables of any kind is indisputable fact shown & proven in published statistical test data and reviews so the difference is indeed there... pretty much why nobody wires professional recording studios with cheap speaker/monitor/computer/etc. cabling but hey, it's really up to you whether or not you hear it.
007-038s? jeeez i thought i had light strings being a 009-042 user on most of my guitars.....damn the only other gauges i use are a set of 10-46s for a whole step down to D and 009-052s on my 7 string....if i were to play one of those friggin guitars id end up busting the low E string in half on the first hit
i really want to know how he got his sound in there Recycler tour, i have some videos posted of that tour and ive never heard tone quite like it before!! still trying to figure it out!
I wish all this shit broke down and Billy'd have to use just a guitar and an amp again and a reverb... like he did on FIRST ALBUM! still great though :-)
just a question, with that rack, does the guitars signal go wirelessly to the rack, then go through all of those different things, then to the amplifier?? sorry if it seems a retarded question!
@sidpineapple its not this shit can be ridiculous sometimes but yes it goes from the guitar to all the rack stuff to the amp, i really dont believe in all this bullshit thought i think all you need is an axe and amp and maybe some pedals
@NintendoSinceBirth1 ummm no false ,,,what if you have different tunings for diff songs,,,you think a stadium off ppl want to sit there while he tunes it,,dumbass
It's good to see a guitar tech who just tells it like it is, that doesn't spread stupid shit, about how cables effect the sound and such, or say something stupid like "The fuzz on the guitar really gives it a nice tone." I was really hoping to actually see Billy doing the rundown, and maybe play a bit, but that shit is his job 12 hours a day; I'd bet he wouldn't want to talk about his guitars for thirty minutes.
Just saw them Sun night in MD (nearly 30 years after the first time I saw them). Still incredible! Billy is such an effortless player and you can just tell he's still having a great time playing for us all. You gotta see them live if you get the chance - you will have witnessed a true American legend.
Billy Gibbons is a guitar player's guitar player. Not only has he been a gearhead from day one, he still gets that low down snarlin' tone, whatever amp/guitar set up he uses. I've been a fan since Rio Grand Mud. They are like America's version of Cream.
Elwood is da man.

007-038s? jeeez i thought i had light strings being a 009-042 user on most of my guitars.....damn the only other gauges i use are a set of 10-46s for a whole step down to D and 009-052s on my 7 string....if i were to play one of those friggin guitars id end up busting the low E string in half on the first hit

I wish all this shit broke down and Billy'd have to use just a guitar and an amp again and a reverb... like he did on FIRST ALBUM! still great though :-)

just a question, with that rack, does the guitars signal go wirelessly to the rack, then go through all of those different things, then to the amplifier?? sorry if it seems a retarded question!
sidpineapple 5 months ago
@sidpineapple its not this shit can be ridiculous sometimes but yes it goes from the guitar to all the rack stuff to the amp, i really dont believe in all this bullshit thought i think all you need is an axe and amp and maybe some pedals
NintendoSinceBirth1 5 months ago
@NintendoSinceBirth1 ummm no false ,,,what if you have different tunings for diff songs,,,you think a stadium off ppl want to sit there while he tunes it,,dumbass
dontmesafrusciante 4 months ago
@dontmesafrusciante then use a few different guitars for that but theres still no need for a million pedals and all kinds of rack mounted shit

Jesus Christ monkey balls, 400 guitars؟
It's good to see a guitar tech who just tells it like it is, that doesn't spread stupid shit, about how cables effect the sound and such, or say something stupid like "The fuzz on the guitar really gives it a nice tone." I was really hoping to actually see Billy doing the rundown, and maybe play a bit, but that shit is his job 12 hours a day; I'd bet he wouldn't want to talk about his guitars for thirty minutes.
You guys should really do a Dusty rig.

the drum tech is no doubt on a very tight union schedule and of course they can't stop for a guitar mag interview (!)
