I have been to Cairo many times I miss it there so much. All the things said by the USA were 100 percent lies as I stayed for 30 days each time. The people of Cairo were the most wonderful people i have met. I will be returning after Ramadan to the most wonderful place in the World. Forver and Always Cairo!
i remember this beautiful song when i was very young.. i remember i had to save my allowance for months in order to buy the 45 record it was on.. i think i still have somewhere.. those were the days when we really loved cairo !!!!
Thank you Alian Zaloum for uploading this song, amazed to know that Egypt has produce stars in art as produced stars in technology and scientists, look at this Claud Françoise Demise Roses Dalida Omar Sherief Bob Azam, Karim shouky Were all born in Egypt, oh well and you too Zaloum, very impressive to view ur website and shame on us that we never knew about you! I wish you the best of luck in ur life and now let me enjoy the song take me back to Cairo:)
Take me back to Cairo I’ve been away so long I must return to Cairo Ohhh Cairo, again to hear that song Rain Sunshine winter summer any season To hear the Sphinx he's talking every night And oriental Tuesday playing for a reason They must be celebrating someone's wedding night Take me back to Cairo I am sad and never smile I must go back to Cairo Ohhh Cairo, just once again to see the Nile Take me take me … Take me take me … Take me take me back
Met a guy in Assiut about 25 years ago. He had a huge collection of Zappa records etc. He also intoduced me to this song which I loved a lot and never since heard.
Just reading all the posts I wanted to add that I am a Greek from Egypt (Mansourah) born 1955. My family immigrated to Canada in 1963; i now reside in Florida. Thank you so much Zaloum for posting this as it makes me realize that my childhood memories are shared by people all over the world.
Take me back to Cairo I ve been away so long I must return to Cairo ohhh Cairo, again to hear that song. well just wanna know the origin of your father because his real name sounds not egyptian Jean Zaloum .. and why changed the name .. Omar el sharif changed his name and became muslim in order to marry faten hamama the actress .. by the way I am christian too but your fathers name dont sound coptic .. your father seem really handsome in the song :) .. my father was about to immigrate in the 60's as well but he didnt!
i don't understand how egyptian youth don't know of this singer!!! what a shame!!
amazing song. too bad cairo looks nothing like the cairo of the 50s and 60s. it is also very upsetting that egypt lost many talented individuals. it breaks my heart.
I want to thank Mr Shoukry for giving us this everlasting song which I always listen to before going to EGYPT to see family. A special song then and now
A great song and a wonderful voice. All regards to the man who sang his love for our homeland.
I bought the record, in vinile of course, when I was 21 , back in 1978, at he Columbia records store, closed now .
I still have at my parents' home back in Cairo. The song brinbs back wonderful memories , especially for Egyptian expatriates, like myself. By the way, is Mr. Shukry alive?
Thanks to your dad , I like everyone else was told it belonged to other one , after all , we discover the truth , it never dies :) thanks , Take us back to that beautiful Cairo that vanished .
Best regards to Mr. Karim. I first heard his hit in the 70s on Voice of America , the Arabic service; years later managed to buy the record itself in Cairo, where I still have it at my parents' house in shobra.
This video touches my heart. It represents beautiful Cairo, where we grew and had some of the best times of our lives. We were all proud Egyptians then, Christians, Moslems, Jews, and not necessarily Arabs living in harmony, and enjoying each other's heritage and whit. The old Cairo is now gone, but thanks to this beautiful video will never be forgotten. Je vous remercie infiniment pour ce superbe video.
Thank you sooooo much for this video. I haven't heared this song for at leat 30 years now! it reminds me of my beautiful childhood back in Egypt and fills my heart with joy.
I always thought TAKE ME BACK TO CAIRO was Al Eskandarany's song. NOw I admit Shukry's origional is far far far better. He feels every word in the lyrics and his performance is soo touching. Thanks Chad Hurley for Youtube! It made me know a lot of things I would not have known without it. And to Zaloum I say your dad has been underrated. It is time he comes back with new a version and video of this beautiful song. What do you think?
Karim Shukry is my father, and Cairo is still dear to his heart. You may do what is necessary to make this song popular again. Karim Shukry must be remembered for the star that he was.
A cool little video. It does have a sort of sweet but awkward 60s charm. I remember this song as a kid, but I always thought that it was unique to Samir El-Eskandarany. Now I realize that his only was just a cover. Thanks for posting it!
Like Omar Sharif (whose real name is Michel Shalhoub) we are Christian. My father was very well known at the time, and I was told he even sang at President Hosni Mubarak's wedding. That he is not popular with the Egyptian youth is a shame. Many talented people left Egypt back in the early 60s. It was a difficult period in that country's history.
His name is Karim Shukry. He was a popular singer in Egypt in the early 60s. Unlike many Egyptian singers of the day, he sang in English in hopes of reaching an international audience. The song was a hit, and became a kind of anthem for Egypt, and was performed by singers and composers around the world. Karim's real name is Jean Zaloum, a film producer now living in Canada. What more information would you like to know?

It's a joy for the eye to see the Cairo that has been!!.
I have spend 4 years doing a PhD on these slums and informal settlements that are suffocating Cairo and believe me...it's a joy for the eye to see the Cairo that....has been!!.....oh how I wished if I had the chance to live in that 60's Cairo ...oh....I can only......dream.......day dream!!
This is a fantastic video! Excellent directing. It's nice to see 60's material alive today. The singer is a hottie! We want to see more videos like this.

Take me back to Cairo beneath the silver moon
i left my heart in Cairo
ohhh Cairo the day i heard this tune.
يا نخلتين فى العلالى يا بلحهم داوا
يا نخلتين على نخلتين هما الاتنين طرحوا سوا
I have been yearning to go back and see my darling,
and still remember the big gardens in the sun
how can i stay away so long my heart is burning
please take me back i want to be near my dear home
