Christ, how do I know if any of you who are reading this really exist? That the replies given are only constructs of my own consciousness? Reply to me myself!
Solipsism makes me angry. It's such a bullshit philosophy, and yet it remains so popular amongst pseudo-intellectuals. It makes me want to tear my eyes out of their sockets.
Every time he says "I" is a contradiction. Every time he says "You" is a contradiction. Either way, he seems to need a kick in the nuts to straighten things out.
But he's merely saying what it occurs to him to say when he thinks he hears people say things. The one thing he is certain about is the existence of his own mind. Everything else is unreliable. Where's the contradiction?
I didn't find the TV series to be as good as the radio series. The actor playing Ford was different and not as good as the one in the radio series. And Simon Jones (Arthur Dent) is a great voice actor, but not a good screen actor. Trillian is also just an annoying squeaky bimbo that doesn't come off as the genius she's supposed to be.
However, the visuals of the guide itself were quite amusing, like the space battle between the G'Gugvuntt and the Vl'hurgs. Best to experience both in any case.
This is one of my favorite parts of the books! Honestly...I sent the excerpt to my philosophy prof a few years ago. Pretty hilarious stuff. Adams was such a genius :D
though myself i even doubt "I think therefor i am"
there are 3 very fundamental explinations to the universe.
1) i stems from our consiousness... the part behind the eyes we call ourself...
2) the physical universe is real and the part behind the eyes is something external that only reflects the state of the bodies mind into that region beond the physical world.
3) the the part behind the eyes can somehow be explained by sciense...
@ZerqTM That's a very reductionist point of view. If you start from square one assuming nothing, it is impossible to conclusively prove that anything exists other than yourself. There therefore may not be anything existing "between your eyes", eyes that something may be behind or even a form of existence in which something called "eyes" exist. Physical existence could just be a way to deal with your true existence. Or a way to reach some conclusion or goal. An internal one, naturally.
@ZerqTM But I'm sure you know all that. I'm just hoping that maybe you have reasons that prove to your satisfaction that things exist outside of your interaction with them.
That's where you got that "I say what it occurs to me to say when I hear people say things" bit... That was great, I didn't find it to be anything like the movie, which I think is a good thing, but I'm only reacting to what I believe is a video of a radio program... ;)
I was really disappointed by the movie, but I knew they couldn't do it right. It's a hollywoodized travesty. The radio series is well worth checking out if you're interested.
where would i find the entire radio series?

Solipsism is no cause for concern - why worry about a philosophy that only one person ever believed in?

@dstewart28, oh yes, the radio series is much better than the TV series, and longer.

@theinquisitor wow, really? when did the radio series air?
dstewart28 1 year ago
@dstewart28, the first two phases in 1978 and later phases in 2004 and 2005. You can buy them on cd or download them if you know where to look.

Yeah, although I don't think they were called that until the tertiary phase. It was the end of the series for a long time.
