"white" picks or "brown" picks... Tommy Emmanuel the greatest performer I have EVER worked with or seen perform. I know, because I was on the crew with this video (camera op) which was produced back in '08 in Chico, Ca. What's even more impressive... he's even a better person!!
I think I can solve the 'mystery of the changing thumb picks.' Many concerts that are filmed for video or dvd will be held over two or three nights to enable editing out the odd mistake and showing the best performance. Whilst continuity is important, someone missed the change of thumb pick and also the slight hair style alteration.
Let's be honest ... does it matter? This guy is the greatest ever! (perhaps the editor wasn't.)
@Chiffoneire Am I also the first to realise that he starts off with a gold coloured capo and ends up with a black one?! Check it out and see if you agree. Cheers.
@100manband Wow, good eye G4W3Z. That was some slick editing. Never would have caught it. The water bottle is still on his rack, the straps on his guitars look the same, etc. Only very minor differences can be seen (Cords are ran under the rug apparently for example). I noticed they cut in some different people in the front row on the DVD, but never imagined they would splice two performances into the same song. Well done though, top notch production.
@100manband more noticeably is the change in capo at 2:44 aswell which makes it alot more obvious that it was filmed over 2 or 3 nights but no it doesnt matter still an amazing arrangement from an absolutely gifted guitarist:)
@G4W3Z may be cause of thickness of thumbpick, to produce a different tone, or something else related to damage of thumb pick during performance, not sure. :)
@G4W3Z That's probably cos the brown one got stretched a bit too much during Tommy's abusive playing.. It has to fit very well or you lose alot of control, especially on the level that Tommy is playing on!
They recorded this at a brewing company...a brewing company. Why is Tommy peforming in a brewing company when he should be filling up auditoriums, and concert halls?
@bushbasher85 That brewing company is the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in Chico, Ca, That is where Tommy first was discovered in this country on television as we did a PBS program on him about ten years ago. it was Tommy's choice to come and produce his Center Stage DVD there... the setting and acoustics are second to none... and so is the beer. I had the the great opportunity to work with him as part of the production crew!!! The Greatest performer I have ever worked with! And a better person!
@bmj41 Ah, first of all Im jealous you got to work so close to the man, and it is good to know there was a good reason for recording this here instead of said concert hall. But you are right the sound is crisp and he had a great crowd. I saw him perform last year, and he was astonishing to say the least.
The most amazing of all guitarists and and wonderfully warm and engaging human being ... Aussie Aussie Aussie oy oy oy

With all that kindling, it truly is a wonder how all his guitars survive sudden combustion.

We've all seen what Tommy can do with his thumb on the guitar, who cares how he changes his thumb picks. His thumb is magic!

I still wonder why he changes thumb picks... At the beginning he has a brown one, and at 2:44 he has a white one.

@bushbasher85 Perhaps because he still has the power to choose his audience. As a performer, that could mean everything.
