I some comments here a little harsh, in my mind this is just a very basic beginners guide to recording guitars done for a guitar magazine, jim's producer has defo 'over egged' the EQ but maybe thats just to emphasis the difference EQ can make to a guitar part? Jim came to my college and spoke about recording, i clearly rememeber he said he rarely EQ'd his guitars except when taking out 'Nasty frequencies' from his Chameleon.
seems to be some confusion as to who is doing what in this vid, the person doing the eq'ing is Pete Crossman not Jim Davies!...hence why he sounds 'more essex than when he was in pitchshifter!' thats not jim speaking!
Hey, if some of this equipment is from the PSI studio, then that KProphecy in front of his monitor is sitting in my studio right now :) That beautiful beast!
@allthatsl3ft03 actually if you're going to eq the guitars you should consider using subtractive eq and the lead guitar should of been sat further forward in the mix. A lead guitar is just that, the lead. also the panning was wrong. He should of considered using a plug in to create the space. It is faulty use of panning in the first place.
Not to have a go or anything, but the way you EQ your guitars is really really bad practice. When correcting the tone of a recording you should never boost, especially by that much, as it will also boost your noise-floor too. Get the sound right at the source, before it hits a microphone or any recording software. If you have to correct the sound do it (in this case) by cutting the low-end, not boosting the highs, it's exactly the same thing but you get less noise.

The only reason why he might be eqing like that is because his hearing is fucked and cant hear anything above 8KHz.
If the tone is muddy, CUT frequencies, don't boost more shit!
what a fool!

anyone knows what mixing program they use in second studio part?
redhack7 2 years ago
They were using Logic the whole time. The first half they were recording to Logic 7 and then the second half they were mixing in Logic 8.
