I think that saying that he could have allowed us to "avoid the fall" is putting too much faith in one man.

Rather I would say that he was the only canditate who saw the fall comming and was willing to "brace for impact" as it were. With Ron, the US could have landed on its feet, a little sore and worse for wear but able to heal. Instead its plunging head first.
