So, to speak to Mary is to request that she use her prayerful ministry to pray for us to the Lord our God, and NOT for her to do anything of her own power or merits.
And that is the problem here... people make up stuff about what Catholics believe. Catholics DO NOT WORSHIP MARY.

I suppose that something sort of like that might be possible if people REALLY exaggeratted things, but I'd still say that in the end it's not the statue itself that's being worshipped. I think that is a perfect answer to which many people don't realise the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church. Most sadly is that most "christians" don't see the ecumenical works that are now occurring, not only between the Catholic and Protestant groups, but also with Judaism (note that this Catholic group is singing the word "Shemma" which is THE MOST important commandment of the Israelites). JPII referred to the Jews as our "older brothers" which I think is a lovely way of describing it.
