  • They should get Gary Lam to do the voice for Master Shifu of Kung Fu Panda!

  • hes awesome..

  • when your opponent graps your arms with his both hands, why you grap his wrist to a lock? punch him right now with your other arm to his face! you know the way is free!!! This is the first wt-princip!!!

  • I think he's just making a point about not going against a motion, but letting go.

  • I don't understand the 5 element reference. Does mean he has combined 5 element Hsing-I or some other 5 element style or has he made up his own variation on 5 elements?

  • The 5 elements are and should be universal to all Gung Fu.Not just Hsing-I but mabey the talk and use it more.I have and teach othe Gung Fu system and they use the 5 elements in thier fighting philosophy

  • Not what I said. 5 element is universal and even broader than martials arts. It just does not normally exist in the Wing Chun lineage. So the question is has the 5 element been added based on a derivation from another style (like Hsing-I) or was it a personal addition from Gary Lam based on his assessment of 5 elements.

  • how do you know? "It just does not normally exist in the Wing Chun lineage".Who told you that are you sure as far as i know no one can give the evidence as what doe`s W/C contains or not.We only know what has been handed down to us.Does it make you a better fighter maby maby not but the more information that you can get your hands on does help.

  • I know it does not normally exist in the system as I studied WC for over 10 years and have interacted with a lot of different schools (non-yip man lineage included). Plus I have probably got over 15 books on the topic.

This of course does not say it does not exist but that it is not common.

So once again - is the 5 element theory mentioned here a recent inclusion by Gary Lam or part of a specific lineage? Does it draw on 5 element hsing-i or not?

  • 10 yrs is just a vapor in life maby over time you will find out but why don`t you just ask him. What i can say is that over my 31yrs of training 15 yrs of teaching Wing Chun is thatt all gung fu is related

  • LOL. I have asked this question 3 times now about lineage and background. So it looks like you don't know or don't want to answer. This is fine.

As for your experience - yes I agree. All martial arts is interrelated. As for my experience being 10 years of "just vapour". Did I mention the other 15 years training in 3 other systems?

  • To be direct my point was .Why don`t you just ask him Sifu Gary Lam.Just for your info I`m no Keyboard warrior.I will say that the more info you can get your hands on will help you in your quest.

  • @dspyrido Seriously, the 5 elements exist in all chinese martial arts not just hsing-i or tai chi. they are even used in chinese medicine. 5 elements are very common in the Chinese way of life. It takes years to understand how they work.

  • Brilliantly simple and functional approach to the opening action.

  • The first wing chun master I see who never used chain punches. What's the reason for that? - However, I like the Gary Lam wing chun style.

  • my sifu has been taught by gary lam and basically the reason he doesnt do chain punches is because there is no need for them, only 1 punch is needed to finish the fight.

  • Thank you for the information about Gary Lam, popax3!

  • You can never rely on one punch finising a fight! Only aggresive striking can be relied upon. If one punch was enough, boxing would be a one round contest. Boxers prove that its not only hard to hit a moving target but even the hardest punchers dont walk into the ring and knock a man out with one punch.

The best martial art training include sparring with gloves and gum shield.

The school I train and teach in do.

  • @KAMON1973 :Well said. I agree. I had a student that couldn't understand why you can't always throw one perfect punch that ends the fight. We all need theory AND practice.

  • I was a ring fighter and I traveled in different areas challenging or being challenged by other great fighters. I could finish my fights faster once I used and applied Wing Chun. It is not a art, it is a science. It is just like being in school learning the scientific method. It will not work unless it is tested by fire. That is why you see more MMA people turning toward Jeet Kune Do & Wing Chun. There is something there.

  • If you feel that Wing Chun is not applicable in the ring because of chain punches, you should just challenge a Wing Chun learner. The teacher will tell you, just because we learn chain punches, do not mean this is something we do all the time. If you believe so, you got ALL MARTIAL ARTS wrong. Remember, you can say Wing Chun can not be used in the ring but 90% of Bruce Lee's way of fighting, what is useful to him, is WING CHUN. Can Bruce Lee win a ring fight?

  • Maybe you are right. I think if not for the bulky grove,

the chain punch can be much more accurate to the centre line.

  • these mma guys r morons. first they dont even train ANYTHING at all. i've done bjj, wrestling, TKD and boxing, and i was critical of chinese martial arts UNTIL i fought my friends dad who was only second form. these guys can really pop. well, i must say wing chun 100% of it can be used anywhere, and they have some of if not the best hands in martial arts. dont believe me ufc tapout shirt guys? go to a wing chun school and ask for a sparring session

  • I was Wing Chun first. I have to admit that I am still very childish, at 28 years old, because I still love to go outside of WC to fight different ways. I wanted to feel victory with the pain I guess...and loved it! Now, my ring age and my regular age is more than my natural age so I needed to just concentrate on Sciences that would help me finish opponents before hitting the ground or before the initial first attack. Is that not what true MMA or any Art is all about?

  • i have no problem with other MA, just guys that started watching MMA after TUF show and now are professional fighters. anything that isn't wrestling BJJ or MT is completely useless to them. i just dislike the ignorance of these morons.

  • I know what you mean. In the beginning of UFC, they would have martial artist that were no lower than 2nd Degree in some system. I know 2nd Degree is not all that great, but it is a great start. Now, any fool can get in even without the TUF show. It really spits in the face of the legends of the ring.

  • damn skippy! you're right! why do people confuse basics and drills to real life situations? Every fighting art has drills and basics, boxing, even mma, but when it's in the ring, it adapted to the enviornment.

    good analogy my friend!

  • Does Gary have any animals?

  • high pak sao low punch is basically the same thing. i defiantly wouldn't tan sao punch with out stepping to the inside at least

  • He`s right about the tan punch , a hook will reach the target. Good stuff! ,who`s his sifu ?

  • Wong Shun Leung's his sifu.

  • It is not tan -punch that is at fault, but how it is applied. Gary Lam's point is don't try to catch the punch with the tan.

  • he fast or me fast?? LOL but a wonderful demo.

  • Gary Lam one of the best Wing Chun hands in all the world.

  • Maybe if everone listened to the expert - Gary Lam instead.

  • gary lam es un gran maestro!!

  • Gimp!

  • For once UfoAreUfo says something sensible! Someone's come on alot..

  • One Month Ago: "I wont reply to you again, you are a waste of energy, and martial arts"--Erugela. A month later: "UfoAreUFO.. Took one in the face lately?"--Erugela. (actually a total of 2 months) Let it go dude.

  • I've definitely pushed a button; you callin me "roach" LOL, and initial sarcastic attacks. Sorry,I'm apparently disturbing the false paradigm you've been living. And so sorry to destroy your ego that was so compelled to regain dignity it lost 3 weeks ago! LOL, how stubborn the ego can get, and pal, U got a big one. Using a metaphor of why U can't explain shit? A person who could explain it, WOULD explain, not give metaphors for his excuse. My points stood, you could not counter. OWNED.

  • great comeback. OWNED

  • Out articulate? If U remembered I OWNED you 3 weeks ago making you look like a dumb fuck. It took U 3 weeks to finally think of something to say 2 try and regain some dignity. LAUGHTIN OUT LOUD. And no, he doesn't contradict my original point. Learn how to read stupid!Jakytm said specifically " embrace the attack and return their full power". Therfore agreeing w/me and JKD. Doesnt sound much like contradiction. And U da first to insult w/sarcasm, and I returned it to you in FULL. Shit for brains

  • Yeah; novice at talkin to an idiot. I don't normally deal with idiots like you, it's certainly educational watchin a moron talk. LOL! Jacytm and I have no contradictions retart. We on da same page, YOU ain't even readin the same book! LOL.

  • Still talking shit?? Fuck face, it took you 3 weeks to respond to my statement!! LOL, that aint "still talkin shit", that's YOU 3 weeks frikn later! U just embarrassed yourself AGAIN asshole. Grow up

  • There's no misinterpreting the name INTERCEPTING FIST. It couldn't be more plain, it's quite a direct statement, idiot. "Ha ha". You keep hiding behind sarcasm and personal attacks. I know for a fact Lam or Lee would not approve of your poor and weak character. Instead of facing the issue and responding directly to the facts I have argued with reason U cowardly go "ha ha ha". Oh,and "grease rag"?? LOL! Dont give out quips if U cant make em, and dont attak wen U cant handle the truth. Dumb fuk

  • p.s. Grow the fuk up.

  • It's rather challenging to comprehend what Gary Si-fu is saying if you are a WCK novice. Sound explanation of how better timing can actually force you to nullify energy first. I agree: it's pointless to force a technique unless your timing allows you to synchronise with your opponent, embrace the attack and return their full power. Failing the latter, evasive action may be the choice. Timing is everything. Peace!

  • Well said jackytm. When U have no choice it's good to have already been trained with evasive counters. It was the part that U stated clearly, that was not covered and neglected: "embrace the attack and return their full power" That should in fact be yer initial mentality (JKD). But U shud be prepared for evasive passive too just in case. Jackytm, nicely said.

  • Exactly, Lam is talkin about WingChun, not JKD. Thus why I said JKD wud not agree with WingChun. Use yer memory here, dont 4get the point, loopy. I said Bruce(JKD) wud not agree w/Lam(Wing). But yer all like "WTF??". "no martial art meets a fist head on, that is idiotic." So JKD is idiotic. Gotchya, Bruce Lee is an idiot. I wud take Bruce's word over yours, but thanx 4 da opinion. By yer logic w/"short fuse" U cudn't be a martial artist. Uhhhh,Bruce had a HUGE one. Yer lookin like an idiot here.

  • "No I cant read" I see then. Yet somehow by magic you can type. You can't read but you can type: Great logic there. And it sounded like U called me a "martial art expert", well if U say so. I didnt kno that,so thanx. And takin Bruce's word over mine? If U would learn how 2 read my word IS Bruces word, idiot. I was quoting and relaying wut da fuk Bruce was sayin ya dumbass.None o yer meaninless quips has counterd my point.I explaind in detail da answer 2 yer question..oh right,U cant read. Gotchya

  • "Not surprisingly" because..? Care to explain that last comment. And no Bruce would NOT agree with most of that Erugela, read my statement as it explains exactly what the fuk I'm saying. You CAN read right? So read it

  • "why U try 2 catch his motion?" Bruce would not agree w/Lam here. Dodging the attack and then countering is foreign to JKD. JKD means: INTERCEPTING FIST. So it intends to MEET the attack. Not dodge and evade. But not just meet via blocking, but WITH an attack; or with a FIST. A fist that is head on to the opposing fist. Don't dilly dally, playing fancy w/clever dodging but destroy the offense WITH an offense. But Bruce wouldnt entirely disagree, Lam has a good point. It depends on fight.

  • he says he is talking about really powerful and heavy punches... so all his saying here is the basics of wing chun "do not meet force with force" .. the tan da he did was head on ... like strait at the punch the guy was throwing thats why it didnt work ...not 2 mention a bon sau (in my opinion) wud probably be the ideal technique for a heavy punch... so he wasnt disregarding "interception"completely (although it seems like it)

  • You guys are talking about facing off in a ring. That isn't what Wing Chun was intended to do. If you want to fight in a ring why not learn ring fighting? I'm not saying Wing Chin is useless in a ring, but seriously.

  • wing chun is that useful in ring fighting.

Only 20% can be applied in the ring.

So, blind chain punching will be blocked easily in the ring.

    Ring, Ring !

  • Wing Chun is not useful in ring fighting !

  • Exactly. It wasn't meant to be used in the ring, unless the ring had no rules limiting what can and can't be used in a fight.

  • Wow, he makes a great point. "Let go."

  • Well I'm going to check him out personally, probably in a day. I think his methods have real potential, and he was a champion. Especially if it was in black belt mag! and dude, everyone knows that many concepts in any martial art hardly happens in a REAL fight. But training in the style gives you a prospective of what to expect, and how to use logic and wise actions quickly, its like a freestyle.

  • DELES16, I would guess the reason most techniques from most martial arts never get used on the street is most people don't actually know anything and secondly most people that train don't fight how they train which is really weird. Basically most people were not born into the arts like myself or others, so it isn't really embedded in them quite deeply, it is usually surface layer or superficial and then they fail in application and functionality.

  • makes sense .. i tried doing tan tau, against MUAY fighters, tan so do fighters, hell even jujutsu fighters.

all in all they fucked me out of this world son. tan tau.. only good when he is SO CLOSE.. if he doesnt catch a rib or face.. im hitting his face nd going boxing cuz for me going inside.. i need reflex bam! but i ned mre training then i can do that and po pi tsarn and kick him ..and so on.

  • but i'm no disrespect.. if yu can do tan tau.. or wing chun. fast enough ..i give you props. thank you for this video.. and if he wasnt his student he would get punch.. why not dodge it. boxers do it AALLL the time. ^_____^

  • Please don't take offense to this but try to look over what youtype before you submit cuz I was trying to red your comment but half of it doesn't make sense. Mainly typos but bad enough that I can't figure out what you were trying to say. Peace.

  • ohh and tan soo do fighters are tkd branch but out of

a tan tau or tan-da is a punch+straight wristpalm block. what i mean to say is that if you are close enough then hit him. yu cant do it when he's not in range of close combat

if he doesnt hit my face or the rib..i'm boxing him out. my reflex will kick in from the him hitting my block. but if i can can control this from more training I can hit him with a pop pi tsarn(double palm strike) and kick the hell outta the guy =)

    thanks =)

  • i didnt say he is bad teacher or not god i,m just saying that most of the people in the wing chun world they train like in this video . nobody in real world attack you lick that lcike a wing chun punch and let the arm stay so you can do your staff (tan sau)i do wing chun for long years i know from eperience.

  • Effective strategy. I've seen some of his clips, he is such an incredible teacher and he doesn't seem 2 get caught up in the politics. Wish he had a school in my home town.

  • where in La does he teach? by LA.. its Losangeles right?

  • Go to his website, he has a school in a town close to LA, you can even take personal lessons.

  • regardless of how the punch is thrown, there will always be an outside to move to. If the atacker was a boxer, and your first action was to move away, then you would have superior postion in the fight.

  • yes nice video but ,who attack you like that on the street ? bring a boxer or street fighter they dont punch like that , thats why most of the people get hit in the street fights, becuse they train all the time like in this video,

  • you do realize that sifu lam was a thai champion in thailand right? he is adamant about the fact that in the ring muay thai is king, but on the street a wing chun fighter can win. it isnt like he's speaking from no experience.

  • He was a muay thai CHAMPION in THAILAND???

  • yes he was. IN thailand.

  • i read about him fighting in thailand in black belt magazine. they had and article/interview with him. personally i think his wing chun is the most functional i've seen...based on actual fighting experience. noone makes wing chun look easier.

  • fighting in Thailand is one thing, being a fucking Muay Thai Champion in Thailand is a whole different shit. I know he teaches Muay Thai but I highly doubt him being a CHAMPION, and in Thailand on top of that. I don't suppose you have any proof to back up your claim?

  • why, benny the jet urquidez did it too...why is it so hard to imagine someone beating thai's at their own game?

  • Benny was a kickboxing phenom. This dude is a WingChun man. Like I said, I want proof. This is the internet, provide a few links to support your claims, cause I sure as hell ain't taking anybody's word for it.

  • i don't really care if you take my word for it lol if it's that important to you, look it up for yourself. i was referring to an article i read in black belt a long time ago. at any rate, he went to thailand, and was a successful fighter there against them at their own game. which is probably more than you or i can say.

  • No,no hahaha you make a claim YOU provide evidence to support it. He was never a champion else he would have advertised it on his website and heaven knows where else. You make a dumb statement like that based on your vague recollection of some black belt article you read on the crapper five years ago...lol HE WAS NEVER A MUAY THAI CHAMPION IN THAILAND, period. He teaches Muay Thai in addition to his Bing Shun, that's all there is to it.

  • How many Sifu are willing to admit in demonstrations that many people only avoid getting hit because it was their student trying to hit them? A very real and honest teacher who knows a thing or two about actually fighting. Probably the best branch of Ip Man Wing Chun if you ask me.

  • Right on opusluxaudio! The fact is Gary witnessed many of his Sifu WONG SHUN LEUNG's BEIMO's matches,he was the appointed instructor at Wong's school. Tried his skills in the rings, using WSL VING TSUN and MUAY THAI he learnt from Thailand and crushed all his opponents. He was even the judge in many championship fights. He's not claiming to be the BEST here, just facts based on his many real life fighting experiences. I wish I had the chance to learn directly from Gary in LA ! Someday...

  • This is all true, wisejudge. Great comment.

  • Hey redeye, do some research about Gary before opening your loud mouth. He was the undefetaed underground fighting champ in HK.

At his age, he'll still crush you in SECONDS,check out some of his students worlwide, you won't last 10 seconds with them. BTW those titties rings of yours don't make you tough , save them for your boyfriends!

  • LOL man !'Chinglish'. ! LOL ...but is a very good teacher & fighter ! Best in the world !

  • where can i buy ur dvds from. i live in australia.

  • Very Good Kung Fu.

    I also like his 'Chinglish'.

  • Well Tiller, may be you can have an exchange program with sifu Lam, he can correct your WC and you can correct his "chinglish"! I'm glade you pick up some of my vocabulary; try to use my other term "turd-itional" next time! Brah ha ha ha =)
