@MyselfOverwhelmed You can use coal to cook wood, (not wooden plank) and make charcoal, the same as coal but with a different name. This is effective because one coal can cook 8 blocks, therefore it can make 8 more coal!

the reason coal is less rare is cuz in mp people build massive things and if torches were hard to make people would just cheat for them.

to echo previous comments, nice to see some caving and your commentary is a definite plus. if getting obsidian at a later date, try digging a hole on the same level as the obsidian, place a water source in the hole, get in and let the water push you forward as you mine. if there is lava underneath you, it will be turned into cobblestone. just remember to not go more than 7 spaces due to water travel allowance.

@MyselfOverwhelmed Ah, I checked the wiki and it seems that they have the same burn rate as planks? Still, it's better if you either smelt it into charcoal or use sticks as fuel (taking in account that we're talking about wood based fuel).

Anyways, sorry for the little misunderstanding with the logs there. I remember not being able to use it as fuel recently, for some reason. Must have been doing something wrong.

Logs: CANNOT be used. Only to make Charcoal.

Wood: 1.5

Sticks: 0.5 (It's better to turn a plank into 4 sticks. That way you end up smelting 2 items instead of only 1)

Sapling: 0.5

Coal/Charcoal: 8

Lava Bucket: 100

Those are the correct burn rates, as I remember them.
