Does anyone know what happened to Martin Dean, the Sounds photographer who specialised in Skinheads at that time? I must appear in loads of his pics. When he got attacked at the Bridge House once, they actually leaned over me at the bar to punch him. I think I was at this gig, It was at some politechnic upstairs in Whitechapel in 81. Also saw them at the Bridge House in Canning town as well as the Cockney rejects, Cock Sparrer, TheBusiness. Still have a Rejects Drumstick with West Ham ribbon attached.

Im from Southall and I can tell you,the asians were the ones who started the trouble,the hambrough had held many gigs before,punk bands,rock bands etc all day long while at school there were so many rumours on the day,the asians wound themselves up.There were a few skins on a 207 bus that were attacked on their way to the gig,anything mentioned about that?no of course not.

As a band they did not express racist views. From what I understand, Steve Pear was even a socialist. Hooton Tom was a big fan of Motown soul, R&B, ska reggae. Gary Hodges was a rather right wing kind of guy but I'eve never heard him ever say anything out and out racist. As to whether or not various member who came and went were racist I don't know. In the end it doesn't really matter. What DOES matter is The 4-skins played some awesome kick ass punk rock?.

That's one thing I'll never understand. Why is it that most people automatically assume that skin head = racist? Remember the ska fad of the early 80? Bands like The Specials, Madness, Bad Manners, The Selecter etc? They all had a large skin head following. Back then there were a lot of black skin heads.
