  • hey you German cant just claim that R, we dutch use it to, and some other European country's.

  • Enjoyed the video, but fell asleep cuz of the music....maybe next time!

  • Thank you!

  • The German language is not easy to learn.

I admire anyone who takes up this challenge.

  • as a german..

    top!

  • Geiles Video!

    Cool staff! ;-)

  • damn R is always a problem in all languages, french spanish , korean jap etc lol

  • Thank you! This video (as well as the "z/ss" video) was quite helpful. My German-American girlfriend will be very pleased with me when I stop butchering her language :)

Music was a little loud compared to your voice, though...you should turn it down a little next time.

  • i like the background ^^ just say BIER!!

  • This is a very helpful video

  • Look in germany, there are many many diffrent accents: sachsisch, schwäbisch, platt, hessisch, bayrisch just to name a few. When s.o. Drills the r much is like he wants to underline the word. Rammstein singer learned another accent like me, whos born in hessen, raised in bavaria and learns now some sachsisch cuz it sounds funny

  • i noticed till lindemann from rammstein rolls his "r"s in some songs and he's from east berlin- is that common there like in bavaria?

  • @bunnyrocks69

no its not. he does because its kinda "the thing" of rammstein. it sounds more agressive and that is what they want to sound ^^

  • @Abyssic1 i love it lol ^^

  • @bunnyrocks69 I also noticed that... the R's have many ways to be pronounced

  • Very helpful, thank you!

  • I love the random guy :D

  • THANKS CUTE.

  • Ok, so I'm confused. Which part of your mouth makes the "RRRR" sound? Is it the tongue rolling up and down (like in Spanish), or is it your throat as if you're gargling?

  • @TheYipedo tounge but without the rolling

  • @TheYipedo I don't know if that helps but i think when i'm snoring i make a sound similar to 'R' or when i swallowed a chewing gum and try to get it out again. But of course much softer than that.

When i do a rolling 'R' something vibrates and when im doing normal 'R' it doesn't but it feels similar.

  • @knurtel

snoring is an inhaling sound xD

if you speak inhaling, you can roll the r like that :D

  • @TheYipedo

i just tried it by saying te quiero and yeah, i think thats the same

  • @TheYipedo Okay, it's reeally hard. it is basically, that you lift ony the back of your tongue up to the upperpart of your mouth. but different from the english "R" you do not lift up the top of your tongue. It stays. So the sound you make is from the back of your mouth, you can feel it in you throat. When you managed to ift your tongue up, imaginae having a hot potatoe in you moth, and you go like "CHH". then try to roll it, naturally it will come in a whie. Hope I coud help

  • @gurkenhamster Thanks for the advice, I seem to be able to make the sound, but I can't seem to roll it. I can do the French and Spanish R's, though. So maybe if you can explain it using those R's (if you're familiar with them), then it'll be easier since it sounds very much like the French R, except it's rolled. I guess I'm having the same problem as a person who can say the flapped R in Spanish, but can't do the rolling R.

  • @TheYipedo the french "R" and the german "R" are almost exactly alike. If you can do the French "R", you're good, after my knowledge, there is no difference

  • @gurkenhamster I see. I saw it on wiki, and basically, they're both uvular (back of the mouth). It's just that in German, it tends to be "rolled" more. And in French, it's a fricative (basically, just "scratching" the back of your throat). Thanks, I think I can get by with my French R then. =)

  • DANKE SCHÖN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Cute guy, will you marry me? I need full time lessons ;) xoxo

  • I'm from germany and i dont say rrrrrrrrrrrrr!

  • now try to pronounce the FRENCH ''R" it's 100 times harder

  • @Nush62 I can do the French R...kind of...depending on my mood lol. But the German R sounds like the Spanish R but more in the back of the throat. I just can't seem to be able to pronounce it.

  • Thanks for the video bro! by the way, can germans do a strong rolled R without having some saliva in their mouths? I can roll the german r pretty well but I need some saliva, otherwise it doesn't roll... is that normal?

  • Always Beer :D okay Germany brews the besset beer :)

  • OREO;D

  • AAHH its embarrassing (I am german) xD

  • Thank you so much!!! You have finally give me something definetely helpfull to learn german R!!!

  • gib mir die deutschen worte her ???? wwwwhaaat daaa foooock

  • ROCK AM RING!!! :D GEIL!

    nettes video

  • Super cute German guy. lmao helped a lot !! danke (:

  • you make me feel stupid... :P

  • I can mimic that Rolling R sound. But I do it differently.Instead of using the throat, I semi close my mouth and then exhale while letting my relaxed tongue flap around like a flag in the wind, hitting my upper and lower jaw like a flag waving around in a windtunnel.

I subscribed hoping you'll make more German instructions. I learn VERY EASILY FROM YOU.

LET ME SAY IT AGAIN, I " FEEL " THE WORDS AS IF IT'S MY FIRST TONGUE when you teach it. It isn't like Rote learning as in school.

  • ich finde deine Deutsche aussprache Sehr gut bist du vielleicht deutscher?

  • @FrostFurz1337 he appears to be. I am German myself and the slight accent his English has, is exactly the kind of accent a German will have when they've been learning English for many years so most of their pronounciation mistakes which come from their native tongue are gone.

  • Thank you very much. My gf lives in germany and im tryin to learn for her. The R is the hardest for me. So thank you very much. Btw ur very cute!

  • I am american and I was wondering will people look at you funny if you trill the r's, thanks

  • @GriffenJCHey! I don't think people will look at you funny if you trill the "r". I am brazilian and I've been living in Germany for eight months and my accent's been getting better gradually. My pronounciation of the 'r' sound is not perfect yet, but NOBODY ever laughed, or looked at me funny because of pronounciation. They actually admire your efforts to learn their language!

  • @andrepossati1 Veilen Danke, Für dein helfen. I hope to also live in Germany someday. I do have another question though do you know when to roll your r's and when not to.

    Danke.

  • @GriffenJC you dont usually roll the r, its not that obvious in the words, you might call it rolling the r when words begin with it, like Rose, Reifen... but you shouldnt exaggerate ^^

  • Das Volkswagen ist ein killer!

    Wir mussen die juden ausrotten.

    Komm in mein boot.

    Die frau sehr hübsch.

    und

    Die krankenschwester is eine dummkopf.

That's all the German I know.

On the second line, please do not take that the wrong way if you're a jew.

Hitler's Nazi officers said that on the goosestep march.

  • @Thinker669

"Der Volkswagen" is right because Volkswagen means "Der Wagen des Volkes" and in the special case you mean the car not the people.

The same problem you have with "Dummkopf" which means "Der Kopf eines Dummen"

and for that, it must called "ein Dummkopf" but you can make your life easier and say

"Die Krankenschwester ist dumm" - The nurse are dumb

  • Sehr gut. But drop the music by 6dB in your mix.

  • ok. not everbody in german says "a" for "er"!

the "hochdeutsch" says sometimes "er" too!

And I believe everybody who says: "ooh! german is soo hard to learn!" the grammar is really difficult, so I'm happy that im from germany :D

  • the only problem i've come across is sometimes i trill my r's when i am speaking english

  • It's easy to pronounce if you're Arabic, cuz we basically have a very similar sounding letter to it in the Arabic alphabet.

  • I love beer in the background haha

  • I'm really gonna post up a video response. D:

  • LOL die amerikanischen 'Brüder' müssen denken " A' can speak German mothafuka!"

  • aww i cant roll my R's and im gonna learn german this year!

  • hrrrrrrh

  • due i love the german language :D

  • Wonderful videos. They are really helpful! :D I have a question though, but I'm not sure you have covered this. How do you pronounce the 'O' with the two dots above it?

  • Who's the random guy that sneaks up behind you?

  • @mige131

That's my buddy Kevin from the band Random Noise :D

  • GANGSTAH ! LOL !

  • Your videos are great! It's kind of hard to hear the pronunciation with the music playing though.

  • @jaynero ISECONDTHAT... keep the music down please. D:

  • Hi. I really enjoy your instructional videos. Question: At the end of your video you suggest laying the tongue at the bottom of the mouth. I can begin to make the sound that you make. However, if I try to pronounce words that begin with r but the vowel that follows is different each time, I sound like I am growling the r's like an animal. Any suggestions Thanks.

  • Does the pronunciation of Standarddeutsch cointain a third kind of "R"? I mean the alveolar trill. Or is it only used in München and other smaller regions, but not in the standard one?

  • @Takatojavaman You don't almost heart the "r" in Standarddeutsch. It's like Standaaddeutsch, so with an long "a".

  • What is he eating at 0:02?

  • @Takatojavaman

It is called a Bockwurst! :D

  • @MeisterLehnsherr Oh, kapiere ich. Ich dachte, dass es carrot genannt ist.

  • @MeisterLehnsherr More like a Wiener.

  • @MeisterLehnsherr Its called Wiener (Würstchen), Bockwurst is much thicker... ;-)

  • @MeisterLehnsherr

meiner meinung nach ist das a "Wiener"

  • @Takatojavaman it´s a Wienerwurscht

  • I have problems pronunciating "Rohr" and words like "Körper", "Mörder". Any suggestions?

  • @lipejdc

Try to say "more" and you will just have to replace the M with the R of the word Rohr. Then you should have a similar sounding pronounciation ;) But make sure to use a German R and not an American one or it will sound like roar ^^

For Mörder just say murder in English, but try using the German R in the middle and an "ah" sound at the end.

  • @MeisterLehnsherr

Can't I just pronounce "Mörder" as Mordor?

Or maybe there aren't many German orcs...

  • @h3lblad3

    Nope :D

  • Lol the examples sister...umbrella...die

  • Thank you for taking the time to show us how to pronounce the letter "R", I found it really easy after practicing it often!

  • Thanks so much for your videos <3. I am having a lot of trouble with the " R" sound :D. Btw could u please do a video on how to pronounce stressed syllable in German? :). ^^.

  • @stoisto ß is pronounced like a normal S.

  • bier hinter dich... xD

  • Danke für das Video! That "R" is just plain evil at times. :P This video was really helpful. :D

  • OMG ! When you explained how you keep your tongue on the bottom of your mouth, it helped sooooooo much.

  • I don't think I have that much of a problem with the pronunciation. A German actually thought I might have been from Germany :D

  • @WaterFor3st

Make a video response, I would love to hear that! :D

  • @MeisterLehnsherr I will try. It's been a while since I practiced :s

  • @stoisto

Sadly not ^^ Just a class trip and I went there once with my parents.

  • @stoisto

I have been there a couple of times, very beautiful landscape and tons of yummy beer xD

  • @stoisto

I will take that as a compliment! :D

  • @stoisto

Oreos! :D The only American product I could find ^^

  • You actually paid attention to everything i said in my message! :-D It is exactly what i hoped for! Really really good job!!! Thank you so much!!! I ACTUALLY love you for this! lol *Gives BIG hug and runs off to practice*

  • @xXxNeatzxXx

  • @SuperAsdfgfdsa

What exactly did you like better? ^^

  • THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I was actually going to request this exact video! Perhaps there will be an "Amerikanerin Frust" part 2.... :D

  • @stubbymcgee

I can see the future! :D

  • who was that little guy in the background at 1:09? that was random :D it's good that you don't have to trill the R because I can't do it :P but at least I can make the R sound in the back of my throat, but when I try to roll it it sounds like I am choking xD

  • @coolbluelights

That was a friend of mine! :D

  • this video is very helpful.and i like the beer in the backround!!!
