Thank you! This video (as well as the "z/ss" video) was quite helpful. My German-American girlfriend will be very pleased with me when I stop butchering her language :)
Music was a little loud compared to your voice, though...you should turn it down a little next time.
Look in germany, there are many many diffrent accents: sachsisch, schwäbisch, platt, hessisch, bayrisch just to name a few. When s.o. Drills the r much is like he wants to underline the word. Rammstein singer learned another accent like me, whos born in hessen, raised in bavaria and learns now some sachsisch cuz it sounds funny
Ok, so I'm confused. Which part of your mouth makes the "RRRR" sound? Is it the tongue rolling up and down (like in Spanish), or is it your throat as if you're gargling?
@TheYipedo I don't know if that helps but i think when i'm snoring i make a sound similar to 'R' or when i swallowed a chewing gum and try to get it out again. But of course much softer than that.
When i do a rolling 'R' something vibrates and when im doing normal 'R' it doesn't but it feels similar.
@TheYipedo Okay, it's reeally hard. it is basically, that you lift ony the back of your tongue up to the upperpart of your mouth. but different from the english "R" you do not lift up the top of your tongue. It stays. So the sound you make is from the back of your mouth, you can feel it in you throat. When you managed to ift your tongue up, imaginae having a hot potatoe in you moth, and you go like "CHH". then try to roll it, naturally it will come in a whie. Hope I coud help
@gurkenhamster Thanks for the advice, I seem to be able to make the sound, but I can't seem to roll it. I can do the French and Spanish R's, though. So maybe if you can explain it using those R's (if you're familiar with them), then it'll be easier since it sounds very much like the French R, except it's rolled. I guess I'm having the same problem as a person who can say the flapped R in Spanish, but can't do the rolling R.
@TheYipedo the french "R" and the german "R" are almost exactly alike. If you can do the French "R", you're good, after my knowledge, there is no difference
@gurkenhamster I see. I saw it on wiki, and basically, they're both uvular (back of the mouth). It's just that in German, it tends to be "rolled" more. And in French, it's a fricative (basically, just "scratching" the back of your throat). Thanks, I think I can get by with my French R then. =)
@Nush62 I can do the French R...kind of...depending on my mood lol. But the German R sounds like the Spanish R but more in the back of the throat. I just can't seem to be able to pronounce it.
Thanks for the video bro! by the way, can germans do a strong rolled R without having some saliva in their mouths? I can roll the german r pretty well but I need some saliva, otherwise it doesn't roll... is that normal?
I can mimic that Rolling R sound. But I do it differently.Instead of using the throat, I semi close my mouth and then exhale while letting my relaxed tongue flap around like a flag in the wind, hitting my upper and lower jaw like a flag waving around in a windtunnel.
I subscribed hoping you'll make more German instructions. I learn VERY EASILY FROM YOU.
LET ME SAY IT AGAIN, I " FEEL " THE WORDS AS IF IT'S MY FIRST TONGUE when you teach it. It isn't like Rote learning as in school.
@FrostFurz1337 he appears to be. I am German myself and the slight accent his English has, is exactly the kind of accent a German will have when they've been learning English for many years so most of their pronounciation mistakes which come from their native tongue are gone.
@GriffenJCHey! I don't think people will look at you funny if you trill the "r". I am brazilian and I've been living in Germany for eight months and my accent's been getting better gradually. My pronounciation of the 'r' sound is not perfect yet, but NOBODY ever laughed, or looked at me funny because of pronounciation. They actually admire your efforts to learn their language!
@andrepossati1 Veilen Danke, Für dein helfen. I hope to also live in Germany someday. I do have another question though do you know when to roll your r's and when not to.
@GriffenJC you dont usually roll the r, its not that obvious in the words, you might call it rolling the r when words begin with it, like Rose, Reifen... but you shouldnt exaggerate ^^
Wonderful videos. They are really helpful! :D I have a question though, but I'm not sure you have covered this. How do you pronounce the 'O' with the two dots above it?
It is not really necessarry to speak the uvular throat "r" in German. In some parts of Germany, Austria or Swiss the "r" is mainly spoken "alveolar" rolled with the tip of the tongue. The "r" pronounciation in the German language depends very much on the area. Even the vocalisation of "r" depends on the area. There are areas with a rhotic "r" (no vocalisation).
Hi. I really enjoy your instructional videos. Question: At the end of your video you suggest laying the tongue at the bottom of the mouth. I can begin to make the sound that you make. However, if I try to pronounce words that begin with r but the vowel that follows is different each time, I sound like I am growling the r's like an animal. Any suggestions Thanks.
Does the pronunciation of Standarddeutsch cointain a third kind of "R"? I mean the alveolar trill. Or is it only used in München and other smaller regions, but not in the standard one?
Try to say "more" and you will just have to replace the M with the R of the word Rohr. Then you should have a similar sounding pronounciation ;) But make sure to use a German R and not an American one or it will sound like roar ^^
For Mörder just say murder in English, but try using the German R in the middle and an "ah" sound at the end.

@Thinker669
"Der Volkswagen" is right because Volkswagen means "Der Wagen des Volkes" and in the special case you mean the car not the people.
The same problem you have with "Dummkopf" which means "Der Kopf eines Dummen"
and for that, it must called "ein Dummkopf" but you can make your life easier and say
"Die Krankenschwester ist dumm" - The nurse are dumb
