Our spending is out of control... we cannot make it doing this. spending and printing paper.
Donald Rumsfeld - Known And Unknown *Interview (Feb.21/11) Part 2
Stimulus spending is absolutely the worst idea for a sick economy. In any case, our economy is healthy, but it's too closely tied to the American economy. As a result no amount of stimulus spending is going to make things better as long as the US is wallowing in the mess they've created. The best thing we can do is encourage our businesses to search the rest of the world for opportunities.
Well, as it relates to the U.S., we know that jobs are not being created at a rate that can replace the jobs we've lost in the past few years any time soon. Additionally, we know that commercial properties are about to run into the same problems that residential homes fell into in 2008. It actually looks as though the private sector in America isn't capable of creating new jobs and simply closing our eyes, standing aside and hoping for the market to work, just isn't going to work.
It seems to me that we can accept the economy we have with low growth and high unemployment, or the government can intervene. As a soon to graduate college student, I cringe at the thought of the government simply standing aside as that would seem to mean it's less likely that I'll be able to move out of my parents basement and start my life.
In America, it seems to me that there are plenty of areas the government could stimulate that could lead to jobs sustainable in the long term.
The U.S. could encourage mobile broadband access, research and development in alternative energy, a vast improvement in our public transportation system, cleanups of the last century's environmental disasters and probably a host of other things. All of these would be investments in our future and create an environment of opportunities for the private sector to build upon.
It just doesn't seem like now is the time to simply stop spending.
@TMAoD With all respect, a country is like a household - if no one in the house is working & job prospects are thin, don't u think this is absolutely the wrong time to go on a spending spree & buy the big screen & the new car? US multinationals are apparently sitting on mounds of cash. They're the ones who should be stimulating the economy, not gov't, but these companies r the same ones that shipped all ur jobs to China in the name of profit.
