in fact one can die from what is called a Glasgow smile. Blood loss is the major factor. Obviously, since they were going for a PG-13 rating they couldn't show much blood or anything (same with Lao's death) but don't think that you can't die from this

I think he just kills him offscreen, with a "gory discretion shot", as the movie contains a lot of violence, but doesn't dwell on it (it suggests, but doesn't show). The "joke" here is that he scares & messes with peoples' minds, but in the end, "just" kills them.
