I picked up the DVDs a short time ago. If you loved it as a kid, you'll probably enjoy it again. Even the bonus material was interesting. The guy who was the voice of Desslok used a sort of Boris Karloff impersonation according to his interview. :-) Go for the series and not the movies though...I didn't see the movies until years later and was disappointed in those.
I haven't seen this show for over 25 years....I need to find a copy of the first series and see if I still like it. Something tells me I will love it. Shoot, I probably sound old now, but I'm only in my mid-30s...
God I remember watching this as a kid in the 80s and being absolutely awe struck at the spaceships. Retrospectively they where a bit silly (basically flying boats) but at the time my mind was blown as hell. Probably only G-Force's phoenix fired my young imagination up as much. Now damn it I'm getting old :(
@poothewinnie I thought the Yamato was the coolest ship ever. <<<=== This is because you were NOT in the US NAVY in WW2.. The Yamato was a REAL JAPANESE BATTLE SHIP..

Why di the american version change the name? It should have been Yamato. There's a meaning behind the name Yamato. Why give it a lame name like Star Blazers?
@ethelion2317 Yamato was the name of a Japanese battleship that served during WWII that's probably why ,it was also the name of an ancient japanes province for wich the ship was named after...
WOW! We were just talking about this on Facebook. One of the best cartoons from back in the day. These kids today don't know what they've missed. Thanks for posting!

There was no such serious amime before in Japan. I just could not wait for the next episode. The first broadcast was a failure because it was too mature for japanese kids at the time. But the first repeat was phenomenal. The anime boom started then. I did not know this was broadcasted and so popular in other countries until today. This is the most beloved amimes in Japan. I saw this at my ANime Club and I meet the Voice actress for Nova. Seroiusly I meet her. Shes not older than when she did the series but yes I did meet her
Check out the youtube video Zu0FMaEneO0 at 0:13 through 0:16 and compare it to this Star Blazers video from 0:37 though 0:40 and tell me Ron Moore wasn't inspired by Star Blazers/Yamato.
@lancetexas999 LOL...Ya, I know what you mean. I'm 42 and after watching this on TV the other day, I thought I'd rev up the old time machine and take a sentimental journey back and so here I am. Wow, I must have been in 4th or 5th grade when this was hip.
@lancetexas999 It does seem like yesterday I was rushing home from school to catch Star Blazers while and eat captain crunch out of a the largest bowl I could find....memories...la la la la and diabetes...la la la la
Although Robotech(Macross) will always be my favorite space war soap opera, I will acknowledge that Starblazers is the original and without it, Robotech(Macross) wouldn't be what it is.
Wave Motion Gun. I have one thing to bring back Star Blazers on Saturday Morning. I think kid these would just love Star Blazers Are you Listening Cartoon Network
It was like a soap opera and you had to watch every episode. At the end, they would show a map and how long they have left to save Earth. This was after Star Wars came on the scene along with Battle of the Planets, Space:1999, Battlestar Galactica, and Buck Rodgers. Flash Gordon doesn't count.
OH EM GEE!!!!! i did a search for this purely on a lark and freaked when results for star blazers actually showed up! i used to watch this show as a kid every morning at 6:30 a.m. in chicago on channel 9 before getting dressed for shcool! star blazers brings back some wonderful memories of happier times. thanks to you oggmonster and you tube for allowing me such a sweet trip down memory lane!
@erdavis7@erdavis7 I have to disagree on the theme. Listen to the Japanese theme. It focused more on the ship itself than the crew and the mission. The American theme is much improved in that it focuses on the mission to save Earth and the crewmembers' sacrifice.
Of coure, that's a difference in viewpoint between Americans and Japanese in the '70s.
@pjamese3 Oh yeah in that respect you're right. I just like the sound of the Japanese singers better. Probably because it was the first version I heard and I was like "WOAH THIS IS SO COOL!"
Man I use to rush home as a kid and sit to see if they would ever make it?! OK PLEASE ANYONE are they making a movie been looking on the Internet seen lots of things but I can't really find it a movie is being made, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. IF YOU WANT A MOVIE CLICK LIKE!!! This would be sooo cool!
Goosebumps. If you grew up with this show, the music stuck with you forever. Not just the Star Force's theme, but Desslok's theme, Starsha's theme, the Comet Empire's theme, the battle theme, the trippy music they played during warps, etc. Nobody will pay for a full orchestra to compose and perform cartoon music anymore. This show ruined me for anything that came afterward.
Liked it as a kid. But then I realized that Japanese animation is terrible. And the scripts are pretty bad even for a kids cartoon. Nostalgia can't save this one.
@KristaMachine It totally does. I'm fortunate to have the first 2 seasons on DVD and if anything, you may appreciate it more as an adult, for exactly the reasons bigblue1986 listed below. I recognized the tone of the cartoon as a kid and it really struck a nerve, because it was a cartoon that didn't talk down to kids and addressed some heavy issues in a straightforward manner. If you watch it as an adult, you really have respect for the way the creators did this and still made an exciting show.
I grew up with this show, getting home from school to see it. It was a great demonstration of sacrifice, honor, bravery, sadness, emotional nothing like any other show of it's type at the time. I had and may still have a fleet of lego ships that mimic the Argo, Andromeda, Gammalon ships, Comet Empire...etc.
We're off to outer space We're leaving Mother Earth To save the human race Our Star Blazers Searching for a distant star Heading off to Iscandar Leaving all we love behind Who knows what danger we'll find? We must be strong and brave Our home we've got to save If we don't in just one year Mother Earth will disappear Fighting with the Gamilons We won't stop until we've won Then we'll return and when we arrive The Earth will survive With our Star Blazers
@delbard1 mhhh...honestly I sing this song sometimes when I facing a danger or a trouble...even a simple bloodgivin' or a night trip on a city bus plenty of drunken bad people...another one is Imperial march (dart vader theme)...bye.
I used to wake up early to watch this before school. This was in 1980.

This is a Japanese cartoon, remade in English. But the intro song just sounds so much like a Russian_Communism march type of something.
"If we don't in just one year/ Mother Earth will disappear" --->CLASSIC! :)

@emremokoko the male chorus and the minor tonal changes do make it seem like russian or slavic folk music.

1974 - Space Battleship Yamato
1978 - Space Battleship Yamato 2
1979 - Star Blazers : The Quest for Iscandar (English dubbed SBY)
1980 - Star Blazers : Comet Empire (English dubbed SBY 2)
1980 - Space Battleship Yamato 3
1985 - Star Blazers : The Bolar Wars (English dubbed SBY 3)
SBY (1974) influenced Star Wars (1977), Battlestar Galactica (1978), Gundam 0079 (1979) and lots of movies /shows /anime.

Check out the youtube video Zu0FMaEneO0 at 0:13 through 0:16 and compare it to this Star Blazers video from 0:37 though 0:40 and tell me Ron Moore wasn't inspired by Star Blazers/Yamato.

Although Robotech(Macross) will always be my favorite space war soap opera, I will acknowledge that Starblazers is the original and without it, Robotech(Macross) wouldn't be what it is.

When this aired one could watch and enjoy japanese anime ... Today its ruined for all.
KBandolo 1 year ago
Old school anime before the wapanese ruined it for everyone.
Back in the days when you'd see kanji and say "what the hell is that?!" and actually believed they were getting drunk off of "spring water"

Wave Motion Gun. I have one thing to bring back Star Blazers on Saturday Morning. I think kid these would just love Star Blazers Are you Listening Cartoon Network
bobg237 1 year ago
It was like a soap opera and you had to watch every episode. At the end, they would show a map and how long they have left to save Earth. This was after Star Wars came on the scene along with Battle of the Planets, Space:1999, Battlestar Galactica, and Buck Rodgers. Flash Gordon doesn't count.

OH EM GEE!!!!! i did a search for this purely on a lark and freaked when results for star blazers actually showed up! i used to watch this show as a kid every morning at 6:30 a.m. in chicago on channel 9 before getting dressed for shcool! star blazers brings back some wonderful memories of happier times. thanks to you oggmonster and you tube for allowing me such a sweet trip down memory lane!

this version sounds kinda like a sea shanty, the japanese on is more like a military hymn or something similar.
milkkart 1 year ago
@milkkart The tone is relatively similar, it actually starts "Farewell to the Earth, from the Ship who leaves on it's mission"

This is so much less cool than the Japanese original.

@erdavis7 do you know where i can find the japanese original?/
tigress66 1 year ago
@tigress66 Search "yamato op" it should be the first video.
erdavis7 1 year ago
@erdavis7 @erdavis7 I have to disagree on the theme. Listen to the Japanese theme. It focused more on the ship itself than the crew and the mission. The American theme is much improved in that it focuses on the mission to save Earth and the crewmembers' sacrifice.
Of coure, that's a difference in viewpoint between Americans and Japanese in the '70s.
pjamese3 1 year ago
@pjamese3 Oh yeah in that respect you're right. I just like the sound of the Japanese singers better. Probably because it was the first version I heard and I was like "WOAH THIS IS SO COOL!"

The English version actually has a wider range of voice if you compare the two.

This takes me back to my childhood. I uesd to run home to catch this show and Battle of the planets. Great memories.
1300rm 1 year ago

The name of the ship is Yamato. And the Japanese are the Yamato race. The Yamato is words to express Japan itself.

Great show, haven't seen it since I was a kid. wonder if its still holds up regardless of the opening song. ;-)
KristaMachine 1 year ago 2
