.....I'm actual using a 68' Fender Princeton Amp with a Hotplate as a dummy load so I get an actual tube amp sound to work with. I use Yamaha powered monitors in the studio -- nothing too fancy but very flat and very reliable!!! If anyone has any questions, just fire away --
I'm in my studio with two separate setups -- I have my studio set up to my right and that you're looking at in the video is my live solo rig. My reason for using monitors and not an amp is so I can run ALL sounds through my computer into Ableton Live for looping.
@ hueseph and @ xpaddy01 - Love your posts re: Kelly's rig . To clear a few things up about this video - the floor monitors ARE NOT used in the studio. This video was shot in the studio to show her new rig as it would be used LIVE. When tracking, these are turned off and she uses her studio monitors.
I'm just now sitting down to catch up with your posts! I love the rig! And, of course, after you demo'd how the recorded parts for 'Hey Joe' go (which sound brilliant, esp. the vocal harmonies), I've got that in my head and whistling my own solo! As you go through each part, I"m reminded of how both Allan Holdsworth and Eric Johnson have their rigs set up. Kudos to you and your tech!! Brilliant! :)
@ hueseph - The monitors on the floor are her stage monitors. Kelly gets a stereo mix there from the main output of the MOTU. As for the gain staging, the preamps in the Digimax are cleaner than the MOTU and also has a nice, transparent limiter. Once in the Digimax, it's converted to digital audio, so no additional gain stage is added by then feeding to the MOTU. The Digimax feeds the MOTU via lightpipe.
@meowtant Lightpipe makes sense. I don't know why someone flagged your reply as spam. Still, floor monitors are loud. There's now way to make those quiet. They're intended for stage use. Quiet and stage don't go together.
Are you really using those PA speakers as studio Monitors? Those things are loud! Also(and please don't take this the wrong way. I'm just a tech geek), it seem that you are going through one too many gain stages. You should be able to go from the DI straight into the MOTU line input. Adding a preamp after the DI is just adding noise since it is a line level signal already and doesn't have to be pre-amped. Just a suggestion. I think you'll find the signal is cleaner if you bypass the digimax.
@hueseph She may be using them similar to what Eric Johnson uses both live and in the studio. As you may know, EJ mikes his main amps, and those mics go through a small mixer with two EON monitors. From the mixer the signal goes out to the main PA board.
@xpaddy01 I know how to mic an amp. I would never use stage monitors to record with. Too loud. You can't listen to a mix for a prolonged time when it's well above 80 dB spl. That's bound to promote ear fatigue.
@hueseph Not questioning your expertise, good sir, merely making an observation regarding Ms. Richey's live rig, which this is, and the live rig Mr. Johnson uses. Ms. Richey has been kind enough to show us her live rig in her studio. I don't believe she uses this set up to record with. She has much nicer studio stuff for that! :)
