this happened to me when i played mw3 and now there is no picture on the tv, it sais it cant connect. (there is no connection between the xbox and the tv i guess)
I guess your Xbox is too dusty, I recommend that you put it in a clean safe place remove and dust or grime on the place your gona put it on and maby check your xbox and the place every week or do a quick check or clear the dust away daily, trust me I do alot of hard work everyday looking after my consols and PC and they are old but trust me that look new
@snakedeadly I can assure you that if this happens you're probably already screwed if the RAM on the GPU is fried, because if that's the case, you can clean out your whole Xbox 360 but it won't fix the issue and if it does, I can guarantee you that it won't take long before the problem comes back again. Trust me, I've had a few graphics cards failing on me in the past and if the memory modules are fried, you can't do anything but send it back for replacement...
If you claim your GPU is "Broken" it is probably not broken and just clogged up with dust. I was told my GPU was broken but i opened up my xbox removed the fan and took our the GPU and cleaned it. Problem solved. If you don't want to do this or you think it involves alot of hard work it doesn't. Just search for a tutorial on how to get to the GPU. Believe me people it works and saves money sending it away to be repaired and saves alot of time.
I've been getting these GPU issues (artifacting) frequently for about a year and have always immediately shut the console down (I have an original Xbox360 circa 2005/6, so the cooling is modded .. hence the life) to preserve it. So yes, you can prolong the life of your console if you immediately stop playing (why would you want to anyways?). It can happen on any game. Happens on PCs when your GFX card is overheating.
I'm having the same exact problem. It just began yesterday. So should I wait until it finally does get the RROD or just report it as such and send it in?
The only reason I'm not getting a PS3 is because I have wasted a lot of money on RB DLC and I do not want to re-buy games, DLC, ect...
mines doing this, ive only had it 2months, so gamestations giving me a new one, i get a black screen too with white dots scrolliing down the screen when i turn it off then on again, annoying as hell !
my 360 graphics started going purple then complete shit all over the place. horizontal lines all over the screen. I had the system fixed with with spacers, etc. goof for a few months and last week it started dying again. now my cd tray doesnt want to come out. fuck microsoft and consoles all together. using my custom built pc which didn't give me problems
All you have to do is wrap it in a couple of towels to make it over heat and reset the system. When red rings come up, power it down, unwrap it, and wait about a minute and power it back on and you are good to go.
Had My Ps3 Since Nov. 17th 2006 Nothing has Happened to it So i think its funny how Microsoft rushed their console to the market and screwed a shit load of ppl with faulty hardware.
Hey I Just Had This Problem And Its Not Even Showing The Anything On The Screen And Just The RROD but dont show anything on TV ...And The Cable That would normally go red stays green .. so i have no clue what the problem is but i have to pay 50 pounds to fix and im thinking of selling it and getting the ALMIGHTY PS3
I got a different problem, first I played GTA4 for a while but it stopped with a screen with black and white stripes. I turned it off and turned it back on about an hour later. 15 minutes after that a green screen comes up and I turn my xbox off, this is where I start writing this comment. Can someone please tell me what the hell is going on!
I have literally just got FFXIII yesterday and was mega excited to play it.... but my Xbox was ruining my enjoyment by going green and red on and off, and now I know my Xbox is dying... WHY DOES IT HAVE TO DIE WHEN I'VE GOT A NEW GAME ARGHHHHH SORT IT OUT MICROSOFT!!!
The problem is the GPU is over-heating. If you take apart your 360, you'll find dry caked thermal compound solution - replace the solution with ARTIC SILVER thermal paste, clean out dust, and you should be good 2 go.
i've used rosewill thermal, and well, it worked, I could see the screen, but the fan is dying, I have to keep a box fan right behind the unit to keep the GPU cool, need 2 get a 12volt fan or something... Anyways, don't give up on the xbox.
your not too good at HL :-/ but there are a bunch of tut's on here about how to clean your GPU and CPU. its pretty easy and cheap and will fix this right up. just type rrod fix or something. helped me out!
@MegadrixfireZ Yep I don't need help- I already tried all the tricks- wrapping in towels etc etc. It never worked. Only trick that worked was reporting it to Microsoft as RROD and they sent me a new console. If this happens to your within 3 years report as RROD and send back to Microsoft and they will replace.
@MegadrixfireZ I would rather have 360 RROD than PS3- since MS replaced mine over a year ago now no further probs. PS3 is overpriced with crap online. I am really bad player though as I get no time to go on 360- send friends requests to Wakeywarrior!
@wakeywarrior I don't see what's bad about ps3 online, I never had problem with. This is not because it is free that it sucks. Both online are nice, but when it is free and good....
Yes this happens because the lead free solder connections under the graphics processor are starting to fracture due to heating and cooling cycles, The solder used is very brittle and fractures, reballing is the way to go
That just happened to me while I was playing Oblivion. God damnit...god fucking damnit. They better fix this for free for me. This is the exact same thing as the fucking red ring. Then just after that, the screen wouldn't even show up.
i just figured out my problem. when i play with the hard drive dis connected the screen works fine. so i gess i need to replace my hard drive..does anyone know how much tht will cost??
This sucks. First I get RROD. I send it in and get a new one. My new one has a similar problem, but worse. So I send it in again and I got it back a few weeks ago and still the same issue. They didnt even fix it. Now what?
wow everyone cracks me up,,, this is not your graphics card going out,, this is a simple thing like the rrod,, fix the green screen the same way you would the rrod,, simple huh,,,, if i could get enough requests,, i can show everyone how to do both of them,, of any other problem you may be having=] have a nice day
well i know its the graphics card but ,,it can be fixed,, its just like the rrod,, just take it apart and make a few adjustments to the motherboard and you are good to go,, the rrod usualy comes first tho,,the the greenscreen then the e74,, ive had them all on mine but i took care of them all=]
well,, with luck my xbox has not rrod since i fixed it myself,, the only problem i have had with it is that i get the green screen everynow and then,, but not to worry i can take care of that as well,, until it decides to go green again,, but yeah i would have sent mine back but i bought it for 40 bucks and with out warranty off a friend,, so i got an okay deal
@jerkhead08 Thats a load of bollocks, i have had 2 xbox's of which i have fixed both for the RROD.. However i recently got the green screen too and i can assure you you don't fix this in the same way you do the RROD. wakeywarrior is correct that it is soley due to the GPU dying.
@ColemanzMustard Correct - Towel trick etc does not work for this save that it may induce a RROD. Send back to Microsoft reported as a RROD though and they replace it.
This can happen- mine went blank with audio only. If under 3 years old, report to Microsoft that it is suffering red ring off death, send it back and they replace free.
mines acting the same. green redish purple screening while playing COD4, then it goes all fuzzy.ugh... soooo if my xbox is under 3 years old microsoft will repair for free???
If under 3 years old, report as RROD and Microsoft will fix. If not, could try X Clamp etc but I would suggest just get a new one with Jasper chipset.
I just had this happen when trying to play Madden NFL 2010. I rarely play my xbox so hard to believe its from overheating. Only problem is the case has been previously opened and modded, so probably little chance to have Microsoft replace it, you think?
Take it out and have the mobo lying on a flat surface and it will work. The problem is the metal housing that it's fitted in. When it gets heated it expands and warps the mobo, which overtime breakes the solder joints of the gpu and/or cpu.

Once you unscrew the xbox yourself you LOSE you warranty.
So I would not advice this.

@imoddcodd Hmmm... you cannot remove the GPU yourself, it is soldered in. Maybe you mean the heatsink that cools the GPU.
