You can exploit some ridge lift on most of the west michigan beaches with 10+mph west winds, Laketown just south of holland held HG competitions in the 70s, better flying to the north at greenpoint and sleeping bear dunes. Not like your mtns - :(
But I rarely get days of nice smooth ridge lift. But I do get a few evenings now and then with a nice glass off.Also on a hot summer day the air density at my local site can be as high as 9,000' which makes landings interesting on light and variable wind days with thermals popping off in the l.z.

Yes! this is lake michigan and the Holland state park. Beautiful beaches to fly.
