This song always reminds me of a girlfriend I had in college, and takes me back to the summer of 1981. I can close my eyes and I am there. I worked in an ocean rsort town in a famous restaurant and lounge. This song had become popular the summer before, and was on a loop tape that played in the early evening in our lounge where I often worked. My girlfriend worked in a dress shop in another resort town a few hours up the coast....(continued below)
I went and visted her 5 or 6 times that summer, but I knew we were headed for a breakup. She was tranferring to another college in the fall, and, well, you know how those kind of things go. CC's song said what I was feeling toward the end of that summer. I would hear it at work, and it would play in my head the rest of the day. That September when we finally broke up, "Never Be the Same" was comforting to hear. It is today, takes me back more than 30 years. Funny how a song can do that.
such a quality album ,produced by micheal omartian( steely dan,boz scaggs many sessions as pianist and keyboard player) with the excellent jay graydon solo guitar! 1979 and still sounds so good! a unique voice like mike mcdonald and james ingram you,re not asking who is this like todays generic rhianna, beyonce and co,they all sound the same!!!!

how true this song is....lyrics are amazing. Really makes me think of ex gf. Still hard to believe how great things were at one time, and it all fell apart..I really dont think I'll ever be the same again without you Meghan D.
I can totally relate to you. I am kind of going through something similar. I reconnected with an old friend on facebook. we started talking offline, and things are kind of going back and forth, but it looks like were going to fall apart. i hope i can somehow save things because i know i would never be the same
Okay, this song was first released when I was about 10. At the time I thought he was singing in French when he sings, "I'll live alone..."; "Allez-vous en" or something like that. It was only in the last few years that my wife told me he's singing "I'll live alone". Anyway, she thought that was hilarious.
Nevertheless, this is a great album from front to back and Cross most definitely deserved the Grammys he won that year.
A while ago, I found myself listening to this song chorro! Neither sorrow nor joy were feeling at that moment, I realized that tears were only the expression of harmony between lyrics, chords, a beautiful voice and an inspiration, unique !!!!!!!
A algum tempo atrás, me peguei chorrando ouvindo essa canção!
Tommy Taylor played drums on this ablum. And let me tell you, he is a solid drummer. As the drummer for Bloodrock and Rattlesnake, I can tell you that Tommy is a solid, kick-beat fluid drummer. You don't hear him....you HEAR him and that is the mark of a great drummer, just like a good bass player. You don't know they are there until they've hit you!!
Cross' problem was he looked nothing like what he sounded like, nor was his looks "marketable". On a talent scale, he blows a lot of garbage floating around today out the water (like Bieber, GaGa, et al).
@cherokee702 I've believed that for a long time. The MTV generation took hold quickly and Cross had a face made for radio. Each subsequent album sold slower than the previous. He really was more of a fit for the mid-late 70's style of music....talented, just poppy enough to succeed in the sales department & good looks were preferred but not required. He kind of book-ended that era in the early 80's. Had each of his albums come out maybe 4-5 earlier than they did, he would have been even bigger.
I can beat that catsnvegas,29 yrs and i still love Annette like it was yesterday and this song says it all , was back in Hull last night looking for her . hesslerdlad
I loved you then, I guess I'll love you forever...How true that is...26 years and still love you as much now as I did then...I only wish we could have stayed together...I miss you Tom...Great song...
brenda m- this is one of a handful of songs that always immediately take me back to a time when you were mine and things were different. if only i'd known then what i know now. but you're happy now and i really am glad for that because it actually helps me in a way while .. " i hide behind my tears". love you "birdie" !- LFT
@Friday13thTaurus --You're right. I love "The Scientist" by Coldplay, American Idiot by Green Day and Johnny Cash's "Man Comes Around". Heck, I will go out on a limb and say that I find A FEW Rihanna, Katy Perry and Gaga songs catchy. What I hate is just the culture today. Children and teens hear so much vulgar, autotuned sampled crap without getting the balance of soft, harmonious music. Top 40 today won't expose artists in the vein of CCross, Phil Collins, Bee Gees. Soft music keeps us human.
This song is awesome!Great melody/lyrics/writing/writer. Reminds me of the worthless girls I should never have wasted my time pursuing(They just married and divorced someone else anyway!!). Very true, "love never feels quite the way that it should". Like Laura Ingram says; ''CHOOSE WISELY,TREAT KINDLY. If you get the first part wrong, the second part won't matter much''.Wise.
thank you .... it's been 21 years since I lost my greatest friend in life! (this was our song).... as Christrpother Cross sings: "I will never be the same without your love" .... great song!
I hate that this song can make me want to cry. I always have a new one too -- so as to stop thinking about the one-that-got-away. I try to forget that I still love *her* so I can forget I can never have her. I haven't told her the "just one thing before you go, just one thing you got to know," thing. Maybe if I win the lottery I'll book Christopher Cross to serenade her.
thankyou for sharing this song with the world.... I used it online as a dedication to a friend we lost this past week.... I appreciate your thoughtfulness in posting it, and using a gentle photo with it..... Blessings from Montana, Lindie
I'm a big fan of short guitar solos that really make an impact on the song they're featured in and Jay Graydon's effort on this tune fits that description to a tee! He's also the guy who did the awe-inspiring solo that literally carves a hole in Steely Dan's "Peg". I could listen to BOTH of those short, SWEET bits of guitaristic improvisation for hours on end (I just did, as a matter of fact!). I wonder how many attempts it took in the studio to arrive at this thing of beauty?
@dansteely77 Thank you sooo much for the axe info. For years I'd wondered who was responsible for that particular guitar solo, having forever loved the silky smooth tone of the instrument. Now that I know, I'm automatically transported back to Graydon's gorgeous work on so many Al Jarreau tracks: "After All," "Mornin,'" "Trouble in Paradise," "Save Me," etc. (Still have the vinyl albums.) Unfortunately, low-key players like Graydon rarely ever receive the credit they deserve!
The work that goes into this kind of music would astonish most of today's young artists. I've been an arranger/engineer for over forty years, and the stuff I'm asked to do today is so base and simplistic it's sometimes embarrassing, more calisthenics than music, oh well, shit happens!
Notice how radio today forgets about all this great happy music? Just goes hand in hand with the filth from Hollywood sitcoms and movies nowadays.... We live in a time of garbage entertainment in the highest order, and it is only going to get worse. Mark my words!
davao, philippines 1982?.....i was a teenager when this song came out.Used to sing it. I have a 9 year-old kid now and i love singing old songs to him.
what can I say.. Love this song.. He was my first boyfriend, I was 10 and then I moved back to the united states.. We got back together when I was 17..well almost 18.. and he asked me to Marry him.. I wasn't ready.. he was in the Army... No regrets.. on facebook we are friends again.. we both have families.. but he knows.. we have some great memories..
Taking donations for a time machine to go back to the 80s. I dealt with much loneliness and heartache then, but it was still a simpler time in many ways with songs from C. Cross, Air Supply, Hall & Oates, Lionel Ritchie, Journey, Foreigner, INXS, Blondie to get you through. Heck, I even loved the 90s music too.
The 2000s, on the other hand, are sheer madness and a showcase of the vulgar and heartless. I hate these days and dread the future. So, who here knows anything about time travel?
It may sound strange but I do not think about a romantic interest when I listen to this.
I remember my mum, she passed away and I'll never be the same without her . The only person who really loved me! And I am so sorry for the bad things I have done.
Man I've been searching for this song for a long time. I heard it on the radio and instantly loved it. Found it! Should've known it was Christopher Cross. Thanks for the post!

I too lost the love of my life by taking her for granted, among other things. I pay the price everyday, life is such misery and pain.

It's just a fabulous song and Christopher Cross is sooo under-rated at times-he deserves much more acclaim!

I heard it two weeks ago, when I went home from school, in the radio (Germany) and now it is one of my fave songs! I do like it really.

I wonder how many attempts it took in the studio to arrive at this thing of beauty?
dansteely77 1 year ago
