Humans on the other hand are conscious of the fact that they are conscious. It's a trait unique to us that allows us to think outside of our instincts and if necessary, actually defy them. When applied to early man, this trait allowed him to think and contemplate his actions and slowly take himself outside of an instinct driven surviving method which is what all other animals do. Although defying centuries of evolved instincts was a risky move, being conscious of oneself has clearly paid off.

It is a book of many things but one thing that has stuck with me is his theory of how consciousness could have developed from a evolutionary standpoint. Using my own interpretation of his text I'll to explain to you the point he was making. There are basically two types of consciousness. I believe that all animals besides humans are conscious in the sense that they have senses, but that they can't think outside of instinct.

I would say we are special; but not in the manner claimed in the bible.
Eg. We are special in terms of life on earth. We are a unique species that is manifesting a radically new level of natural order in the life of the earth. In this century we will either sustainably adapt our new level of order to primeval order and create a new global civilisation, or we will fail and earth will try again perhaps with a new species.
Hey, great video. I'm curious, what do you think we'll find when we look out that window? In my own experience, studying these subjects have led me to question the "grounded" view of spirituality (being all material, etc) more than ever. IMO a naturalistic approach alone, is very provincial (what I can see w/ my senses is real, etc). I think both (that there is intelligence in the universe AND randomness/chaos/naturalistic)are part of a larger "picture" outside this window.

I'd be interested in hearing your opinions on Astral Projection.
"looking out the spiritual window" is what brought it to mind, but Astral Projection is an extremely interesting phenomenon of consciousness....
I'm sure you would have an interesting take on the subject...
