I'm replying to your description, I agree with the fact that you get irritated when people comment about you not having music on some of your videos. and for those who don't like the fact that you don't have music on your videos, why don't you turn on the radio or go on itunes or vevo in another tab and play music while watching the video
Maybe you are using way too small canvas? Try 3000px*3000px at 300dpi, or somesuch. You can always scale your finished work smaller, but should help with your pixelation, i hope.
I have a copy of photoshop elements 8 and I wen ever I draw with my tablet it looks like something in paint the smallest brush size just looks all pixelated, I've changed the brush to airbrush but it just looks like Microsoft paint's spray can tool?!
@Fancypants117: Most likely your image is too small. It's best to work at least 2-4x larger than your final image. You can reduce the image size later and your linework will look a lot tighter. Brian Bolland, Batman: Killing Joke illustrator, mentioned that for the revamp he used Photoshop and he enjoyed how much detail he could put into each panel. Detail that was so minute that they wouldn't even show up on the final print!
when i first got my tablet i was discouraged by the concept of drawing without looking at my pen (like on paper). but this video inspired me to buckle down and spend some time learning the hardware and software like photohop that comes with it. rock on dude, i can tell that was a breeze for you, i would love to see a full piece of your work

Brilliant!! :D I have been trying to make fur for a while with no success, I didn't think to use a spatter brush and was trying to do it all with a single point brush, lol. Thank you! By the way your brother plays guitar very well, the music was very pleasant to listen to while watching intently as you worked. ^_^
@Dylithe for digital artists its not usually the process its the result because usually digital art is more commercial the by hand for example a concept artist for a videogame company needs to put out lots of paintings within a small timeframe for his/her clients
Hi chris , can you tell me if you do use the pen pressure or not ? mine don't want to be changed it is always with pressure i have photoshop CS5 and also my brush setting are different , i can't find the "other dynamics" place so when i draw there is the pressure and i can't get the fur effect its uniform , can u do something for me ? : i will make a video of me drawing i'ill send it to you and i want you to answer me in this video to show me the good setting =) iwatched all ur work
wat kind of schooling background do u have ? i want to do something like this for a living and i have an intuos 4 and cs5 so i was wondering if u had any tips or anything like that to give me
can you do this without a tablet or not?and how did you have this other dynamic settings...that doesnt work for me....you are lying,,,,if not anser to my question
You can do it without a pen tablet but it will be a massive challenge. The cheapest pen tablet is about $75. You have more control with it than a mouse. The advanced digital painters are using a higher-grade tablet that costs about $200.
Also, an understanding of basic drawing concepts such as shadows and perspective, will go a long way in helping to recreate what the artist has done here. Again, without that, it is going to be a struggle.
I think you mean $2000 for high end digital artists. Tablets as the Wacom Cintiq 21UX and so where you can draw onscreen and such. I find it easier then drawing while looking at my screens
DANG THIS IS AWESOME, How long have you been taking art, And what tablet do u recommend, I plan on buying a Wacom intuos4 small. =] Your an amazing artist!
ANOTHER AMAZING TUTORIAL, I AM BEGINNER WITH PHOTOSHOP BUT I AM REALLY IMPROVING SINCE i STARTED TO WATCH YOUR REAL TIME VIDEO. I GREATLY APPRECIAT IT. I REALLY DO ;D
Sorry, as it turns out i wasn't patience enough to see the answer in the video myself, I thought if I would've watched the video fully before writing that comment I would've forgotten what I wanted to ask... That stuff happens to me all the time...
I'm very new to Photoshop, but I love drawing cheetah's. Right now, they're still just plain, but I'm working out realistic ways to create fur. This will help a lot!
Yes, I agree with everyone else. Can you please do more tutorials like this? I do a lot of face art and I find it difficult to shade the face, using the brushes. Often I color a spot and then smudge, color then smudge and when I zoom out to look at my work, it looks like a sloppy, blurry, mess. The complete opposite of what I would of done on a piece of paper. I use the Intuos3 also.
The eye is so realistic it's staring into my soul O.o
This video was really great, just goes to show you don't need fancy brushes to make things look realistic. :D Also very impressive how you were able to do this without a base sketch to work as a guide. :)
What tablet do you use? I use a basic Bamboo Fun tablet... its a small sized one... which I don't like... considering my screen is 6 times larger-..- I was considering a wacom Intous 4 in Medium... but could you recommend something??
When I do the same brushsettings as you do my brush still has the same pressure the whole way! Your fades from light to more intense to light again. Where do I find that setting for my brushes?
@ThisWasAccepted from the sounds of it your talking about the drawing tablet right? do you have one? its pressure sensetive so you can draw light lines or dark lines
Hey Chris this tutorial is extremely helpful. I've always had trouble with fur and hair and this made things so much easier for me. Awesome, awesome job!. Your bro has got some skills on the guitar as well!
cgsbgs, thanks for this tutorial, I've been hurting for want of good tutorials that show the techniques involved in digital painting. I appreciate artist willing to pass the torch.
A really helpful video! I wanted to know how you managed to get your greyscale images to look so stunning before you add any colour. As for the music, love the guitar in this one but I can't honestly say that I ever noticed a lack of music in the others...
thank you for sharing this technique :) after seeing your cat painting on here i desperately wanted to know how you did the fur to look so real. ive never really drawn anything in my life but its always been something i wanted to try and artists like you inspire me to just try
In reply to your video description, this is one of the most helpful tutorials I've ever come across for digital painting. I never knew the dodge tool was used for highlights. But is that the same as using a white brush to go over it?
And I'm certainly going to use more smudging now, you've inspired me. Thanks for the tutorial! =]
Heres a good idea for people who constantly complain to cgsbgs for not having music incorporated on his videos: Put your own music! That way, you always please yourself! Yay!
Great tutorial! really helped me out :D You should create one about your use of lighting. for example from some of your dragons breaths! (Only thing i screwed up on from this tutorial was the eye!)
Chris! YOU ROCK! great artwork - and pretty good tut's.. i just have some trouble with the brush settings, as the brush turns out solid. If you could by any chance help me that'd be great :D
there are some cheap tablets you can get... mine is a wacom babmoo costed about 70 euros... and there are even cheaper models... a tablet makes a lot of difference compared to the mouse... Allthough the tablet doesn't make the artist...
hmm can anyone tell me were i can dowload good photoshop and with aut paying for it? I really cant finde anyone :(( And i want atlast try to draw on photoshop :D
I don't think you can get it for free anywhere without doing illegally (which I do obviously NOT recommend.) However, there is a smaller version of the program available ("Photoshop Elements"), which you can download the 30 day trial of from Adobe. I will also look into it, see how it works as a segue for getting started. I'll get back to you.
@SnowMage14, I would recommend going to wacom.com and looking at their prices. Their bundles often include tablets along with a few programs, and you can pick out one that fits your skill level and/or budget quite easily. I personally own a Bamboo Fun pen tablet; it came with Photoshop Elements 6.0 and Corel Painter for only $75 (at the time, may be cheaper now). I just think there are too many risks in pirating software.
quick question would be cool if you could get back to me. Are you using a mouse? as ive started drawing straight on to photoshop and am thinking of investing in a touch pen. As i just cant get it neat enough advice would be great cheers :)
Its pretty nice way its here :) Te msond take in the painting to think abaut much more that it is with out sound! Its nice way too maybe cook a new artist :D
Oh you have got to make a tutorial on how you effectivly make scales on your dragon. I'm still stuck with shading the freaking face on my piece and it's taking far too long.
Yes, this should be very helpful to me. I just got photoshop nad im struggling to use it, i know what most of the tools SHOULD do, but its just a matter of getting the damn things to DO what I want.
Pencil is the best. Digital is just a tool... To me, I find digital very annoying because there is a completely different learning curve that has NOTHING to do with an artist's talent level. I am experiencing this most with learning Maya.
Amazing. I read your description to find out what tablet you use, I'm thinking about getting the intuos 4 but am torn between the large A4 or the cheaper Medium A5. Is the added space really worth the extra cost? Which size do you use?? Thanks
I don't prefer to go after the biggest... I only use what is needed. For me, personally, I like the 6" x 8" space for drawing. I have one of the huge largest sized ones, but that one is necessary because it is on the 3D/animation machine which has 2 widescreen monitors. So in reality, I am practically still using that same drawing span as one of the smaller ones.
God you are ridiculously amazing at this. I think I might want to get into this someday. Oh and BTW, I don't know about anyone else but I liked the music in this vid.
Why did you use same brushes for eye painting?
It seems that they don't fit for it very well.

You could also try Gimp. It's really good, and to me, it is better than Photoshop.
0Peasqueak0 1 year ago
@0Peasqueak0 but GIMP lacks epical effects D:

@0Peasqueak0 I agree I love using gimp2 over photoshop elements6 or cs5
kasumisman 7 months ago
@0Peasqueak0 Unfortunately not on a mac (which he is using) because Gimp is heavily reliant on the X core
NeonFusky 4 months ago
@0Peasqueak0 Gimp is aimed towards beginners, whereas Photoshop is for a more intermediate/professional person, hence the people that use it.

@0Peasqueak0 GIMP is a really good program, and it's free, but you can't really compare it with Photoshop

@SnowMage14 try downloading, GIMP it's a knock off program of photoshop.

quick question would be cool if you could get back to me. Are you using a mouse? as ive started drawing straight on to photoshop and am thinking of investing in a touch pen. As i just cant get it neat enough advice would be great cheers :)
jooshgunner 2 years ago
I don't use a mouse. That would take forever, ;-) It's a Wacom Intuos 3.

Oh you have got to make a tutorial on how you effectivly make scales on your dragon. I'm still stuck with shading the freaking face on my piece and it's taking far too long.

thank you for the new vid, Chris, please pass on to your brother he has a very nice sounding 12 string, very Cat Stevens.

Despite drawing a big bad werewolf, the tune fits the video well. Kudos to your brother :)
Being able to view the interface also helps follow your work a bit better, I think this was a great idea. Looking forward to more of your videos!

Awesome video and while I am using Painter 11 now, the main concept behind this tutorial is very useful to me.
Thanks!

Maya is definitely one of the harder 3D packages to learn but its great once you can grasp it.

u mean ree instal photoshop or update it?
martin10dk 2 years ago
I mean the tablet software.
cgsbgs 2 years ago
Yes, this should be very helpful to me. I just got photoshop nad im struggling to use it, i know what most of the tools SHOULD do, but its just a matter of getting the damn things to DO what I want.

erhmm look at my video response plzz :(
martin10dk 2 years ago
hmmm. not sure. Maybe some other folks can offer suggestions as well. But I would start with updating the tablet software.

If they want it, people should go on deezer and listen to the music which they appreciate while they look at your videos...
grinnwald 2 years ago
nice video, hopefully this'll help me when im photoshopping stuff.
also i agree w/ you. Pencil > digital, and music = not needed in videos. This one was nice because it wasnt too distracting. They usually are.

it s usefull but people have also photoshop elements...:D for example me and i don t know any burn tool and where to find those brushes in normal....

but i ll probably go back to pencil...:D
80smashe80 2 years ago
Pencil is the best. Digital is just a tool... To me, I find digital very annoying because there is a completely different learning curve that has NOTHING to do with an artist's talent level. I am experiencing this most with learning Maya.
cgsbgs 2 years ago
ye it s hard...but you have more tools than in real life... I can do quite nice things (I think :D) with pencil for my age... :D

Amazing. I read your description to find out what tablet you use, I'm thinking about getting the intuos 4 but am torn between the large A4 or the cheaper Medium A5. Is the added space really worth the extra cost? Which size do you use?? Thanks
porkinmycorkhole 2 years ago
I don't prefer to go after the biggest... I only use what is needed. For me, personally, I like the 6" x 8" space for drawing. I have one of the huge largest sized ones, but that one is necessary because it is on the 3D/animation machine which has 2 widescreen monitors. So in reality, I am practically still using that same drawing span as one of the smaller ones.

God you are ridiculously amazing at this. I think I might want to get into this someday. Oh and BTW, I don't know about anyone else but I liked the music in this vid.
