My favorite SG song. From the scratched guitar string beginning second measure (razor sharp), to the distorted, shaken vocals (Led Zep, Hats Off For (Roy) Harper), to the genius of harmonizing the lead guitar with the rhythm guitar during the breakdown @ 4:37.
Also, following the theme of hanging, the uncontrolled guitar solo as the principle struggles to breathe can't be denied. He slipped, and had second thoughts. "Fell too far to start again".
This song, for me, is a mix of... Suicide and nightmares. It's one of my favorite Soundgarden songs, and maybe it's a bit weird to say, but this song has a lot of sex appeal, haha.
I always felt disappointed that Soundgarden pulled the plug after Down on the Upside since to me they were a band that got better with every album and Down on the Upside was such a brilliant album that seemed to be under-rated just because Soundgarden were associated with grunge and that was becoming uncool...
this is the most classic of rock in modern times...easily one of the best soundgarden songs. i hope the new stuff is continuation of their lack of any bad material. down on the upside was overlooked to say the least.
@mlynn1231 yeah, i was wrong, turns out he did drugs, but he didnt use them while he was in soundgarden (he said he couldnt write songs while drunk or high anyway)
agreed, Cornell never was a junkie. Yes, he did smoke tons and tons of cigarettes and drank heavily cause of his depression, but no, he didn't do any drugs.
@blackholedays yeah I know, I meant that he never did drugs during his time with Soundgarden (though I think he still did drugs when they just started, but he quickly stopped, I dunno). For example, Chris said he smoked weed at the age 12, by 14 he "had moved on to stronger things" :D
Never thought I'd see a comment comparing Soundgarden to Nine Inch Nails, haha. They are two of my favorite musicians though. And I agree that they are similar. They start out kind of small then build to something magnificent near the middle to end. I mean, a lot of songs are like that, but these two do it somewhat more similarly than most for two very-different genres such as these.
there comeing to my fucking town and i have no faith in seeing them no one to take me D: mabey if i hadnt found out theyd be here tommorow i could go :(
@Umy1332 no its fucking horrible thier probly seting up stage right now :( probly would of went but my dads been being a douche would of had him take me but i didnt ask cus id rather miss out on my secound favorite band then put up with this shit
@MrTufflong: Chris didnt do much hard drugs, he has had cocaine/pill/alcohol problems but he was never in danger like Layne or Kurt were, of being swallowed up by addiction. He did do lighter/psychedelic drugs though, and Lollapalooza '92 he got stoned with Pearl Jam and then they played Outshined together, it was funny and awesome :P and 4th of July was written while under the influence of LSD
I'm as straight as they come, but Chris Cornell is the only guy I would go gay for. Yes, he has probably one of the greatest rock voices ever, but more importantly, he is a musical and lyrical genius.
"Shadow face, blowing smoke and talking wind, lost my grip, fell to far to start again...." Cornell knows how to say something without being generical or too ambiguous, he just knows what to say.
Definitely one of their best. I miss the 90's. Times when we had so much talent, there wasn't room for these sh*t top 40 pop rock bands to become famous.
One of the best songs ever made by my favorite band.. so i guess im biased.. yet this song sums up the mood and feel of the entire album. it doesnt get better than this folks! Thanks for posting this!
@jstick34 I remember when it first came out I listened to it once and then shelved it for about five years. Then I pulled it out and listened to it in December right when it started getting cold, and now this is one of my favorite albums of all time. Reminds me of good times.
@jstick34 anyone that trashes this album is someone that couldn't write a single good song themselves, much less an entire catalog worth of genre-defining music . Always consider the source.
@MrKillerhaven That's why I make sure I listen to Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Faith No More, and Primus daily. It helps me cope with the pain of knowing that music is dying.
Most people are common, that's why they don't recognize or appreciate exquisite art~ let them have their mediocrity...we'll just keep enjoying excellence.
Ah, this song is like...gospel-like. One of the most emotional songs I've ever heard. Soundgarden can blow your face off or reduce you to tears, and in this song they can do both.
I really can't stress how amazing this song is musically, lyrically...or production-wise. It's one of the many songs I'd heavily consider having played at my funeral.
@mrbobawesome Slaves and Bulldozers or Mailman. But yes, this is up there. The pure emotion that's thrown in there without the straight up yelling or saying "I'm really fucking angry" is nice, and this is one of those few bands that can do that and do it well.
Ever since Soundgarden reunited I have been going back and listening to songs like this and remembering how incredible they are and were. This song just moves me for some reason, I can't even explain it. This is my favorite song off an album full of great songs. 'Down on the Upside', 'Badmotorfinger', and 'Superunknown' are all classic albums and I love that they finally reunited!
the musical shit that nirvana and sound garden spewed out sucked. sorry my opinion. it was in coherant phsyco-babble. Now, the 1980's metal was the absolute best!!!

This probably was their best album.... n ironically their last.... i still remember spending a whole 3 days looking for this album in New Delhi markets, nd those jerks hadnt heard Soundgardens name. The funny part was they kept suggesting i buy Michel Jackson... I still hv that cassette, although it dosent play due to the zillions of runs i gave it.
@maicodude69 That's dedication. I don't know how many times I had to use the cd scratch remover on my Badmotorfinger. Now that I think about it, I don't know how many times I cursed a tape deck for eating my Louder than Love. Had to re-spin the tape on that one so many times to the point the tape finally gave. The new world ended up giving us something for our strife, online digital music as well as the means to store it on computer.
I haven't even heard a quarter of all things Soundgarden and I'm loving it. I'm savoring it, this shit's gotta last me a lifetime because music like this just doesn't come around anymore.
Foxy song !! Wooohooo !! I love it !! I'm so happy Soundgarden is back !! Wish they will come soon in Paris, after all these years they due me that: I must be the youngest Soundgarden fan cause I was 4 years old when I discovered them !! I still listen to it !! Cornell rocks but last songs he did were shitty !! Really !!
I fell asleep to this the other night. Had the best sleep I ever had in a long time. :)

I remember waiting for this album to come out I wore out Superuknown I use to cruise around in my 65 GMC pickup beat to shit with my 78 Black Les Paul
Custom learning Soundgarden my original Superunknown book is like the old testament its so torn up I lived a grungy life and I would do it again

@vcough wth?! really? is there new material?
Ryerlyn 2 years ago
no word at all yet. I predict some summer festival shows, but I personally think new material is pretty unlikely. they've given nothing away though.
maybe Reading or Lollapalooza. I hope

I haven't even heard a quarter of all things Soundgarden and I'm loving it. I'm savoring it, this shit's gotta last me a lifetime because music like this just doesn't come around anymore.

You're all honourary Soundgardeners. For ONCE a decent youtube commentary not plagued by trolls and idiots. Head High!
