  • I remember when this episode aired on our local PBS station - I figured they wouldn't reveal the Doc's name so casually but what confused me was everyone saying it was "Theta Sigma" when clearly Drax was saying "Fete" (feet) or Feta Sigma. My friends at school & I debated this endlessly until the Target book came out and we found the spelling and were even more confused... years later I was to discover the British colloquial habit of pronouncing "TH" as an "F" which explained it. Sorta. :-)

  • wow so many angry comments on this vid...and whats with all the ones about the doctor being a reincarnation of god, where are u guys even getting that from hopefully not from his nickname...cause thats all it is, a nickname, there is no way the doctor's name is going to have anything to do with god, that would just be a stupid thing to do, and for the offended religious people here quit getting so offended guys its only a TV show its not the end of the freaking world or anything, just calm down.

  • In the 1975 Second Edition of "The Making of Doctor Who". The Doctor's real name is given as "∂³∑x²".

  • Wow! Moffat really knows his Doctor Who history, doesn't he? lol

As a Christian, I obviously believe God caused the Big Bang, and started the ball rolling as it were. So for him to suggest The Doctor is God or knows God, well both are very stupid.

I half-expect that nit-wit Moffat to give God a really stupid name like Jeff or Larry. Anything to thumb his nose childishly at any and all people of any given faith.

shame. Would have thought Dr Who would have been better then all that. rme

  • Oh it just occurred to me....WE ALREADY HAVE AN EPISODE "DEALING" WITH THE Beginning of the Universe! LOL! According to Terminus :The Doctor and Kari find the control room of Terminus and he realizes that Terminus is also a time ship. In some unspecified past, the fuel that powered Terminus became unstable and the now dead pilot had tried to jettison it while still in the time vortex.

  • oh the old laughable "he lies" bs that moffat conveniently planted into the his sick tired version of a series. But I would dare say the Abbott is a far better candidate for being more then a "mere Time Lord" then the Doctor ever could be. Besides what kind of fn challenge is it then for the dr to solve anything if he's some fn demi-god? He is suppose to be JUST a Time Lord. Nothing more and nothing less.

Moffats pretty much guaranteeing that doctor who will be canceled in the next 3 years.

  • Also if the Doctor is this "powerful" or "extra-special" Time Lord then why is the Abbott/Kanpo more powerful then the Doctor? And no contrary to the laughable BS Moffat pulls out his rear-end, the Doctor is not in the habit of lying except to conceal info from his enemies or to protect a person/s from themselves. But Kanpo could travel through space and time without a Tardis, he could project a vastly superior future projection of himself (Planet of Spiders) then the Doctor could (Logopolis)

  • The Doctors name is given in a comic book from years ago, one that tells you (pardon the pun) who's who. Its like an equation.. lets see if I remember.. D3(sideways m)W times 2. Amazing that no one remembers this

  • the doctors real name has something to do with the end of the universe, the doctor knows the secret of how everything will end and how all things in the cosmos began before anything ever started thats why silence must fall when the question is asked no one must know this secret.

  • @doctorw2 still thank you so much for spelling it out. couldn't make heads or tails what the heck was up with that ending.

An ending that came out of a rear-end. lol

too stupid for words. moffat is. rme

  • I hope Drax somehow survived the Time War.

  • well, how if Moffat went that route would he smart enough to have the Dr go back and try at least to meet his son or daughter and every child in-between that child and the multi-great Granddaughter? I would hope so. I mean he has a time machine and as the "last of his kind" he would want to keep in close contact with his own descendants. If she isn't a descendant of the Dr's and Madame de Pompadour and she is just a new character, bet she has a romance with the dr. rme

  • he for a short while left the Dr at the end of the story only to come running back to warn him about some approaching cops. Dodo who was trying to call the police about an accident was stuck inside the Tardis when the Doctor took off. Anyway, We've already had that. Of course Moffat might have a completely new character in mind. I hope so. And not a descendant who was the result of a "secret love child" between the Dr and Madame de Pompadour as she would be his multiple great Granddaughter and

  • he is by having her be a descendant of Madame de Pompadour which would hardly be original considering that we long time fans have already seen a descendant of someone the Doctor had known but not been a companion. Dodo Chaplet. She was supposedly the descendant of Anne Chaplet whom the First Doctor and Steven Taylor met during the story of The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve. They were both very fond of Anne but even so the Dr refused to bring her with them in the Tardis so Steven was so mad

  • I forgot to mention in my long list of people who knew the Dr's real name was of course his own Granddaughter Susan. Susan would of course have known her own Grandfathers real name and it would be nothing short of insane for Moffat or anyone to dare suggest otherwise.

Rumor has it that Sophia Myles is returning. (TGIF) Some have said they would be disappointed if she plays the same role. Some think she will play a different one. I'm wondering if Moffat thinks he'll show everyone how "clever"...

  • vice versa. Anyway, many wondered if perhaps it meant they really served the Time Lord who went by the name Omega (The Three Doctors & Arc of Infinity). What I wonder is why is the same army who was part of the group who had helped kidnapped Amy, brainwash River into killing the Doctor, is also guarding her? And why did they charge with that crime in the first place? Something weird about that. I won't be watching but I will be asking my friends on my facebook page to keep me up to date.

  • that he passed with 51% the second try. So he wasn't the best student, though he was probably more then capable of doing the work, in Invasion of Time Borusa, one of his teachers at the Academy remarked how could never fool him then and he couldn't fool him now. He also commented about the Doctor pulling pranks at the academy. And the Dr has mentioned leaving the citadel and climbing a mountain to see a guru for guidance. This guru appeared in Planet of Spiders as the Abbott.

  • Theta is most often used to represent unknown angles, especially in the study of trigonometry. Theta represents an angle in degrees, but not in radians

So now I am wondering if the writer of Armageddon Factor who was Writer Bob Baker Dave Martin, intended for the name to be some sort of joke about the Doctors character back the. like he liked to look at things from all angles, I don't know. Something like that. Or if he was a math whiz which I doubt because in Ribos Operation Romana mentions...

  • He is NOT a reincarnation of a god or anything else! Sorry but RTD threw all such crap like that out the window when he informed Dr Who confidential that the two Time Lords who opposed the (largely fictitious version of ) Rassilons plan to have Gallifrey take over the orbit of Earth were NONE OTHER THEN THE DOCTORS OWN PARENTS! HA! And they looked like ordinary Time Lords to me. To make the Dr into anything other then a stubborn time lord with a caring heart who was bored to tears is insane!

  • is an abomination!!!! And if Moffat even thinks of going there he will have every Church leader breathing down his neck!!!

To be God, he would have to be all knowing, the Dr is a complete idiot at times.

To be God he would have to be everywhere at once. Last time I checked, the Dr can only be one place at any given time.

To be God he would have to be all powerful, and the Dr has very limited power.

There are other reasons why that idea is so laughable. but I think I've made my point.

  • @sallyjosie Okay, Okay! Sheesh. I just thought maybe the Doctor inspired the legend of God or was worshipped as God or a god on a lot of planets. Its just that the secret of the Doctor's name has been so overhyped that I tried to think of the most extreme explanation of why he's such an enigma. I didn't mean to offend anyone.

  • @Calriec alright, but as a Christian I would find that type of story extremely offensive. But I have done a bit of research and found the following.....

    sigma

    Mathematical sum.

    theta

    Temperature

There are three sigma symbols, an upper case, a lower case and an end of the sentence case.

The capital letter case is used as summation.

The lower case is used to represent variance in statistics.

The lower case is also used to represent stress in mechanics and physics.

  • @sallyjosie I'm a Christian too and I would hope that Moffat would not go that far. I was just saying that it was possible that was what he had planned for the Doctor's secret name. If so, however, it would be a stupid idea, yes.

  • @Calriec I wouldn't put it past someone like Mr Moffat to pull a stupid stunt like that. some non-believers like to lump everyone into one group and to blame all believers of whatever religious group for the actions of maybe 10%. Very childish.

Just look that army first seen in Time of the Angels. An Anglican Army? And someone on another video found that the symbol on their uniform was the Greek symbol for Omega which is what we believe God calls himself. The Alpha and the Omega or

  • was SO special of it's own accord is beyond stupid. I'm willing to bet that other Time Lords had the same name over time. No Proof, it's called common sense. If his name had been something special way back then, it would have been mentioned. I know Moffat just pulled this crap out of his rear-end in the last two years. But what I'm saying is that it has no basis in historical fact. And it's stupid. Can't wait till he's gone or a new boss who puts Dr Who back on track. fingers crossed.

  • even Time Lords. So those running around babbling such laughable crap, well they can stop now, can't they?

River's parents are two Humans. Two Humans cannot create an alien baby, try though they might.

But back to the name crap. To make his name into this riddle that could cause the silence to fall on the universe is laughable at best. Yes, theoretically someone could have found out his name and used it to set a trap. fine. I guess I could buy that. But to suggest that his name is

  • if his name was really THAT unusual wouldn't someone have mentioned it by now? I think I know what the early writers had in mind. The noblest Chapter of Time Lords. Gee, I wonder who could have been the founder of the noblest of all Chapters? That is really such a tough one.

And so the putrid sociopath River Song is not a time lord or even close. She had some characteristics similar to a Time Lord but that's it. The Deadly Assassin book makes it clear that only an elite few on Gallifrey are

  • Azmael (The Twin Dilemma) and how about Coordinator Engin who was able to look up the Doctor's personal bio (The Deadly Assassin) He saw that the Doctor came from Prydonian Chapter of Time Lords. (not all Gallifreyans are Time Lords as outlined in the deadly assassin book lol) And what about Romana? Since the Doctor wasn't known as the Doctor at the Academy and she mentions in The Ribos Operation that the Dr had passed with only 51% the second time she could have easily seen his real name. and

  • even by Time Lord standards. So before he ran away, he went by his Real Name. It's called common sense. Something the current crop of writers on Dr Who are sorely lacking. lol

But if one uses one's brain, before the Time Lords were time-locked there were probably hundreds of Time Lords who knew the Doctor's real name. Like Borusa, his teacher from the Academy, his fellow classmates like The Master, The Rani, Drax, Runcible (The Deadly Assassin) or his friends like The Abbott(Planet of Spiders),

  • hate to burst some other peoples bubble but if you look closely at Drax's reaction when the Doctor firmly insisted on being called the Doctor. It was one of surprise. Like "what, you want me to call you that?"

It is painfully obvious to anyone with an ounce of brain that the Doctor did not use the Dr moniker before he ran away from Gallifrey with his Granddaughter in a rickety old Tardis. Why would he? Especially before he obtained his first Doctorate? that would have made him seem pretentious

  • ok Along time ago i watch Dr. Who and I do believe that he is the on that created the earth.I can't remember the exact episode.but when he went back in time to stop one of his enemy's there ship exploded and made the big bang the episode was with Tom Baker as the doctor..does anyone else remember that ?

  • any true dr who fanatic would know, that the Dr is actually a reincarnation of a timelord god called (the other) who helped rassilon and omega capture the eye of harmony and create time travel, he rescued susan who recognised him as her grandfather (William Hartnell).

  • @jayceboy All conjecture and a bit stupid if I'm honest. The only stuff that counts as cannon is the actual tv series.

  • Alll the letter are greek the are (theta sigma, phi gama upsilon delta)(θΣ Φ ΓΥΔ) the last "s" shaped symbol is ancient greek and it could be either of these modern symbols Σ, Ψ, or Ξ

  • this is what River song wrote on the cliff

  • You all might find this interesting: "ΘΣ" (Theta Sigma) was also a commonly-used abbreviation for "God" in Greek manuscripts of the New Testament. The capital letters Theta and Sigma together resemble the word "ΟΣ", (who), and some scribal variations in New Testament texts will have "ΟΣ" in a few passages while others have "ΘΣ" in the same passages. What does this mean? Well, at the risk of sounding blasphemous, it could mean that the Doctor's name is "God". Is the Doctor God? Thoughts?

  • @Calriec Hell NO! NOT EVEN CLOSE! What a load of crap! But with a dumba** like Moffat who knows! The Doctor is just a fn Time Lord from a Race of Fellow Time Lords! They are nothing more then a race of advanced aliens and NOTHING ELSE! And They are not even the most POWERFUL RACE, there have been other alien races that were even more advanced then the Time Lords, such as the Eternals, The Thrals, The Guardians just to name a few. So to take an advanced alien and make him into some sort of God

  • damn I forgot what to type so I'm typing this instead O.o

  • but The Doctor does have a full name.

    As I was able to make Sydney Newman's aquatence when he returned to Ontario from England;

I found out what Sydney had chosen for the Doctor as a name.

I had an opportunity to chat online with Russell T. Davies and he confirmed for me that out of respect for Sydney Newman the Doctor's Late co-creator, the name Sydney had chosen will remain.

I had to sign an agreement not to disclose the Doctor's real name. but if you listen carefully during a Tom Baker episod

  • wasnt there a ood called ood sigma?????

  • @DNAidan They must be related!

  • nope, that doesnt make sense... we all know is name is Tom Baker!

  • Well, he may think he's saying "Thete" but he's mostly certainly saying "Feet" because I can see his lips when he first says it... but it reminds me of the wise saying... "Lots of planets have a north." Apparently they also have an east London...

  • It's Bob.

  • The way I read the line from the 2011 finale, I figured the Doctor used his name to seal up seal up something that should never be unleashed. Possibly the Time War, because he said there where much worse things in it than Rassilon. Uttering his name will unravel the seal on whatever he locked up and that will not be good. Thus it'd be better for everyone if he died before he would have to answer the question.

If so, then it doesn't matter that Drax knew, because that was before the seal.

  • @Calemyr that does make sense, seeing as how the greatest question that can never, nor should be answered, is "Doctor who?"

  • And I thought his name was Benjamin, silly me.

  • okay if it's "On the Fields of Trenzalore, at the fall of the eleventh, when no living being could speak falsely or fail to answer..." then we're safe because if it's the "Fall of the Eleventh" that I think it is, then the Doctor will be in the middle of regenerating when the question is asked and therefore won't technically be alive at that moment and won't have to answer the question.

  • @Metaldog14150 ....That's a brilliant theory! I hadn't thought of that at all.

  • What's really funny is that Theta Sigma (ΘΣ) can translate into " Who" as in DOCTOR WHO ! ! !

    HA HA HA ! ! !

  • Seeing Tom Baker's Doctor always brightens up my day. He was my very first Doctor, saw him for the first time when I was 9 or 10. I'm 29 now, going on 30. A long time being a Doctor Who fan.

  • It's a nickname, but part of his real name. Actually it's Theta Bob Sigma .

  • rule 1 the dr always lies

  • If you follow all the books/stories then Theta Sigma could very well be the Doctor's name BUT that before he was "born" he also had a life before and was known only as "The Other", so even if Theet was his name in this incarnation it still wouldn't be his original birth name... thus the mystery lives on! :-p

  • Did anyone else happen to notice that the message River Song carved into a giant cliff face, ostensibly in Old High Gallifreyan, contained the distinctly Earthly characters ΘΣ ??? I jumped up and yelled "YES!" when I saw that episode, because I remembered this little conversation with Drax, from decades ago. She wouldn't be so indiscreet as to put his real name in a public place, but a nickname would be safe enough -- and get his attention!

  • @xheralt I thought is said"Hello Sweetie"

  • @MissMelissa716 -- It did, among other things. There was a lot of text up there, the Doctor was probably just summarizing it for the Companion's benefit. But "Theta Sigma" are the first two characters, everything on the cliff face was Old High Gallifreya squiggles. I don't think Theta Sigma means "sweetie". That opens up a slashfic can of worms... >.>

  • @xheralt No I didn't notice this but it is so cool that you did, well done, that's fantastic.

  • I remember this scene, always wonder if he was just playing along or he really knew him.

  • Comment removed

  • Theta Sigma or Thete was just a nickname the Doctor had back on Gallifrey when he was at the Academy as a youth. Hate to disappoint but its not his real name.

  • @Kaagh178 but sometimes a nick name comes from the real name. So maybe his name is theta, but it's much longer?

  • @dustymew Who knows? But I do know one thing. In the Doctor's future, on the fields of Trenzalore at the fall of the Eleventh he will be made to answer a question that must never be answered. Doctor who?

  • i think Theta Sigma was just a nickname....or so i've been told....i might be wrong though....

  • was that 'ian' or 'peter'?

  • @Fanofjambi

I believe he's saying "Theta Sigma" (or "Theet" for short.)

The Doctor's name was written as "d³Σx²" in his first American comic appearance, as well as appearing in a stone in "The Five Doctors," even though Theta Sigma would be written as "ΘΣ."

  • @hememsot oh ok its just that the old tape i couldnt quite understand what he said lol peter right theet yeh i gotchya now

  • @hememsot how do you no it would be ritten like that? and if you can understand that weird riting what does it say his name is?..........if im being rude sorry i dont meant to
