goosebumps. Wow 122 years! That photo (121- 1996) for me, she was still beautiful when she smiled. Really, this is absolutely fanstatic! She saw computers, televisions, mobiles etc.(Internet!) That last photo- See? Shes wearing a sunglasses. Really, 122 years and 164 days are really fantastic. I kinda jealous. At 119, she still remembered, how did she meet with Gogh! Jeanne Calment is (was) the only person that knew van Gogh!!

Though personally I think spending almost half of your life as an elderly person would suck. It seems like that life would go by so quickly and your senses would fade to the point of not knowing anything about the world around you. How can you appreciate all the progress you've witnessed in your life if it's impossible at that point to keep up with anything? Plus the longer you live, the more deaths of the people you care about.

@RunikaMori That's the thing: she didn't spend half of her life as an elderly person. Just look at the picture where she is 80, she looked like she was 50-something. She started to learn fencing when she was 85, and was still riding her bike when she was more than 100 years old. That's not really what I call "old", physically speaking.

Though witnessing your friend's death is definitively the most horrible thing about it. She saw all of her children die, after all.

It's really weird to think that when I was in first grade there was a woman around who was 40 in 1915! I would have loved to talk to her and ask her some questions. This woman wore corsets made of whale bones, saw the first silent movies, the first cars, drove in horse drawn carriages, wore her hair in the gibson girl - style, lived through impressionism, art nouveau, expressionism, Bauhaus, Art deco, Surrealism, everything!

it is amazing what this woman saw, she was born before the telephone and automobile, danced to the waltz, and wore skirts that went down to the floor and lived to see the internet, bikini, space shuttle and rap music. :) With my love for social history I would of found it fascinating to have talked to her for just a few hours about her early life. god bless her!

Very nicely done. It's almost unfair what happens to humans in old age. WHY do we have to grow old, get sick and die? Is it to kee the planet from being over populated, or because of sin? WHICH is it? Does anyone have proof of the truth? This will eventually happen to me, and my baby. So sad. People would say it's a blessing to have made it this long. Only unless you are well. She appeared to be well, but still has to wither away and die. Very sad for all of us.

Very nice comparison photos. One thing that strikes me, in addition to her looking young for so long, is that, unlike most of us, she never lost bony dimension in her lower jaw and chin. If anything, that area increased in prominence. Also her browbone.

I can't help but wonder if she had a slightly higher than normal output of growth hormone, which repaired her body so efficiently all those years.
