  • What would you consider a "good" vented brush? What kind of bristles should you have on your brush for combing out curls?

  • @blondiejean I now use a Denman Styling Brush. :)

  • <3 just what i needed! thank you so much :)

  • thanks for the video it really helped =D

  • So they all had bangs? It doesn't look that way in the pictures. ??

And would this cut work with naturally thick curly hair?

  • @darkblu09 Not sure what you mean about bangs?? And the middy haircut does work w/ all hair types. :)

  • @LisaFreemontStreet

Heavens, I love the back ground music! What is the name of the artist on the first track?

  • @17sunnyhour Oh, I thought I added that info somewhere. It's Mike Sanchez...

  • @LisaFreemontStreet

but the name of the song is ???

  • @17sunnyhour...I dunno...Ramblin Boogie, maybe? :)

  • I don't care for using cloth to roll my hair.... Maybe I'm not doing it right, but my curls always come out really weird when I do the cloth method.... Perhaps I should just not sleep on them???

  • @soccer69heit or just try a different roller...:)

  • @LisaFreemontStreet Haha I figured that was the way to go.... lol

  • I LOVE the way Scarlett Johansen's hair is in The Black Dahlia. Can you do a video on how to get that look? Many thanks!

  • @ktmggg I'll give it a look and add it to my Diamonds and Dames requests. :)

  • @LisaFreemontStreet

The scene I'm thinking of specifically is the one midway through the film where Kay and Dwight are having dinner alone (right before they start tearing each other's clothes off :D). Her hair is stunning!

  • THE BEST WAY for getting retro hairstyles is to use "old school" IRON CURLERS. In fact in the..30s40s,50s..they only used this for do the hair, and sitting under hairdryer. SO...You have to put this curlers on wett or damp hair. Beffore rolling spray every piece of hair with hairspray or you can even put hair mousse, especially if your hair is very strait, long and heavy. When you are dry, brush(!) all hair, spray it, put a hairpin on one side..But watch out on "banana" and the wawes in front!:-)

  • @expreslonac Actually the most authentic way is still pin curls. Metal curlers under a hair dryer have historically caused very severe burns. I would certainly not recommend them. However, if someone is fortunate enough to find iron rollers, they certainly can be used as a wet set. I don't think the results are very much different than foam rollers or perming rods...:)

  • Hi Lisa! I really love the 1940's hair look, but unfortunately I don't have hot rollers. Is there an easy alternative?

  • @DreamersGirl66 I recommend purchasing a set of Hot Sticks which are only 14.99. They're cheaper than hot rollers and produce a more authentic look. Also foam rollers are always the best option for authentic styles.

  • i can barely read that!:S

  • @samsegunda read what? :S

  • @LisaFreemontStreet

    ..

the font that you used, and the colors ..

    aaam

    thanxs anyway:)

  • @samsegunda haha...well, 58,000 views into it and this is the first I've heard that the font was a problem. I have always and will always use this font so perhaps my videos are not for you. :)

  • hi lisa. i have a very straigh hair and everytime i try to pin it it ends up sliding down... i just recently cut it with a straight bang and i love the retro look, but im having some trouble styling it... i was ondering if you could give me some advice on how to overcome this little obstacles, besides teasing hair...

  • @tinkerbelski curl it! :) Straight hair wasnt very popular for any of these retro styles so get out those rollers! :)

  • Dear Ms. Freemont!

Thank you very much for the haircare tips:D

  • did bettie page have the same layering in her hair as well?

i'm going to get my hair cut this week, and i have bettie bangs, i just need to get the rest of my hair cut!

and im dying to do a pin curl set, but i want to wait til i get it cut so it looks as good as it possibly cannn!.

    thank youu :]

  • @chopxxsuey24 Bettie did not have much layering. Just a little along the bottom to give it volume. :)

  • Hey toots! You say Rita Hayworth hada 10 in middy cut. Can you email me the specks for that cut? Rita was always my fav for that sexy/glamour look. I would lov to take that to my hairdresser to see what seh can do with it, THANKS!

  • How do you curl your bettie bangs? I used a curling iron but then throughout the day half of my bangs lose the curl so it looks very uneven. I tried hair spray and everything....

  • @KiwiMangoLove You can have them cut so that they curve under w.out curling...ask a stylist how to do that, specifically. Preferably a stylist familiar w/ Bettie bangs.

  • Wow, this was so helpful, thanks :)

  • what do you mean by saying the cut was the same length all over but consisted of layers?

  • Each layer is the same length so it falls in a stacked position. For example, if the layers are 8 inches, the ones on top will naturall fall shorter than the ones at the nape of the neck etc.

  • @LisaFreemontStreet It's now called a "uniform" haircut. Where the stylist cuts the hair with an elevation of 90 degrees from every point of the head. It's called uniform because all the lengths of hair are the same length, but when in natural fall (0 degrees), they give the appearance of layers. When you were first explaining this, I think about a year ago, I didn't get it. I'm now almost finished a hairdressing course and it's no problem.

  • @courtenae89 thanks! I was using a book from the 40's as a reference so I knew there were probably terminology changes...so thanks again!

  • omg. thonk you! im officially gonna get betty bangs...im really gonna do it!

  • what is the name of the first song??? :D

  • I believe its Ramblin Boogie by Mike Sanchez. I usually provide an annotation...

  • thanks a bunch

  • You can get a good bangs roll with out cutting, you take a long section in front ,comb down, roll under and pin at sides, very double indemnity

  • Yes, I actually do that in one of my videos but it doesnt look exactly the same. I wanted to get that out there.

  • my hair isnt layerd and is about the same length as veronica lakes, my hair is naturally straight. ive been looking for diagrams everywhere! on how to style my hair like hers, to get that beautiful marcel like waves rather then curls. do you have any recomendations? or sources?

  • Since I have bangs, my options are limited until I have someone to come over and sit for me. I did do a Veronica Lake tutorial...it's in my Authentic Vintage Hair Techniques playlist. I used a fingerwaving method that works wonderfully as long as you don't have bangs, like I did.!

  • Alright

    Thank you so much!

  • I'm sorry...

but I'm so dumb. Disregard my last comment. I type in the wrong URL 10 times. -.-

Are women who go to cosmetology school taught to read these sorts of diagrams? I don't want to go to my stylist, give her that diagram and have her stare at me because she can't do it.

  • She might stare at you like she can't do it but she did indeed learn to cut hair based on diagrams like this. I was assured this by both my stylist and the owner of the salon. :)

  • Hi! First of all, LOVE your videos! Q: I have those same kind of sleep-in rollers and I have below the shoulder curly hair. I have tried to style my hair w/ these but, it just comes out WAY too poofy. Any suggestions?

  • it will always be poofy at first but will relax over the course of a few hours. My recommendation is to curl your hair the night before you intend to go somewhere and fix your hair first thing in the morning. Allow it to relax over the day. It should be perfect in a couple of hours.

  • I also use the same sleep in rollers as you, can i ask what styling aid you use ( setting lotion?) and how do you get ends under as sometimes mine stick out despite trying to tuck them in. Do you brush out with a vent or paddle brush, as sometimes i get a little fluffy at the ends. thanks!

  • I have not yet tried a setting lotion. And the way I get the ends under is just to spray them w/ water...water works best for forming my curls. I use a vent brush but I find that if you brush individual sections against your hand, you will get that soft wave indicative of the era. Thanks!

  • Thankyou Lisa!! you have answered questions I have been asking for years in these tutorials. We are go to a burlesque night in few weeks and you have sorted my hair out perfectly. I have been after this look for so long, all I need to do is practice practice practice!! thanks again B

  • thank u for these great videos, I ve just subscribed to u . Fabulous ideas , gonna try them all . Thanks xxx

  • You are wonderful at making these videos. My question is, do you visit a hairstylist who specializes in rockabilly and funky do's or do you go to any regular salon?

  • The salon I go to is the epitome of a southern smalltown salon. It is in NO way funky or rockabilly...I am the first they've heard of the style. They work on alot of blue-haired old ladies and almost every younger woman who comes in there gets the same 'John and Kate Plus Eight' hairstyle. :) Believe me, if I can get what I want in such an environment, anyone can! LOL

  • Would you recommended Velcro Rollers? If so how should I use them with dry or wet hair?

  • Velcro rollers don't work for me. Use them on dry hair or you'll have a tangled mess on your hands...they don't give much curl...mostly are just for volume.

  • hey does anyone know this song who is it?

  • Thanks for your interest...both songs are by Mike Sanchez (boogie woogie piano-man). The first one is Ramblin' Boogie and the 2nd song is called Fast Train. Check out his website...he's one of my favorites!

  • Thank you so much for all of your wonderful videos, this one is no exception! I was most definitely 'born in the wrong decade', haha, it would be amazing to be able to wear a snood and pearls at 19 without getting stared at. (:

  • I feel for you, lovey!

  • I say be who you want to be! Be yourself....others who stare are just jealous!! :)

  • What a fantastic help this was! I need information on what kind of supplies I would need for vintage hair and you sure delievered. Thank you so much!

  • So glad to help!

  • Excellent tips! I used to sleep in the sponge curlers but the crazy kinks I would get were too hard for me to work with so I prefer the hot rollers for more control over your style :)

  • Try using them w/out sleeping on them. The kinks usually develop from sleeping on them.

  • It's great to see these styles coming back!

  • Are they? I sure do get funny looks...;-)

  • anything for shorter hair?

  • My hair is not short so it would be difficult for me to actually do short haired styles. But as you can see from Myrna Loy's style in this video, short hair was definitely 'in'. And most styles can be tailored to the shorter lengths. If there is a style you're attracted to, send me a message and I'll see if I can help you work it for your hair length. :)

  • fricken awesome! what was the name of the first song? or was there two? all i know is the song at the begining was awesome! great video!

  • Ramblin' Boogie is the name of the first one...Mike Sanchez. He's a great boogie-woogie-er. :O)

  • thanks, i had never heard the song before and i was sitting here dancing in my computer chair trying to concentrait on the video. i had to start it over muted in order to watch the whole hair subject, again great video thanks for posting!

  • he heh. Don't tell anybody but sometimes I put my videos on just to listen to the music. I have awesome taste! :D

  • that's cool! and you do have good taste in music, don't let anyone tell you different.

  • Yep...I know I do. :)

  • Thanks much!! That's what I thought. Thank goodness I was prepared for the worst and backup was 1920-30s fun...so, its all good! I appreciate the advise SO much and LOVE ALL YOUR VIDS!!!

  • Thank YOU. ;)

  • Hi! My stylist was baffled at the 1940s Middy Plus hairdo from Daniela Turudich's 1940s Hairstyles, and I ended up with a salvaged 1920s bob (which I can marcel wave) but...did you have to explain? Or did you do a modern vintage twist hairdo? multiple layers with 4 1/2 length, with U shape? Any help would be SO appreciated!

  • I am afraid you may need a different stylist. I had a stylist that was 'baffled' by it too but she claimed to be able to mimic any photo I brought in. There is something not right about a trained stylist that can 'copy' a photo but not a diagram? I went to a different girl and she 'got it' immediately. Even told me that this is a variation of a cut that is very popular today called something else...so she did it quite often. I would change stylists. :)

  • Hi. I love your videos and I just wanted to ask about the bobby pins in this video. I just got ones like them, but I usually use the normal, tight ones. These ones are very widely spaced. Is there a special way I use them because they don't stay on my head?

  • The photo was just an example of bobby pins. The widely spaced ones are more for french twists and thick hair. I have to use the tight ones because my hair is fine.

  • Ok Thankyou.

  • What are the songs playing?

  • Both are by Mike Sanchez (he's one of my favorites)...Ramblin' Boogie and Fast Train..

  • In all your videos I've seen your bangs are off to the side but this you showed them in the Bettie Page style. Do you just sweep them to the side usually or are they different styles?

    Thanks, love the videos!!!

  • The pictures from this video were last year when I still had shorter bangs...:) I've been growing them out since then so I can't currently wear them that way.

  • i love this video :)

    thanks

  • I love these hairstyles, but I like to be very versatile, today I did my hair 20´s style, tomorrow I have a graduation party and I think I wanna do a 60´s thing. I have very long, thick hair and it´s difficult for me to style it. Usually the style doesn´t last no matter how much hairspray I use. What else could I use?

I don´t think I could take the plunge just yet...

  • You don't have the cut in order to do these styles, they just make it easier. Soft layers around the bottom will make your transition from 40's to 60's much easier though. And the style may last longer w/ a little layering as well. If not, Iris (ilovegerardo) does a great job w/ her long hair and she does styles from every era, including now. :)

  • great <3

  • I've got an appointment to get my hair done in a couple days. I'm seriously thinking of getting the 7 inch layer cut. Don't know yet if I'm ready to take the plunge, but it's just hair. I can always let it grow out!

  • That's right, if nothing else, you can try styles you otherwise never would be able to...

  • great videos!!!

  • Great video! I'm getting my hair cut in the next couple weeks, and am definitely angling for something with more layers (per a 40s style; I'm thinking Rita Hayworth length). I also (finally!) bought a set of hot rollers this week for setting my hair. Now I'm all fired up to try some new styles! :)

    Thanks for posting this video!

  • So cool, elegantyamused! I want to see pictures or a video with your new style. You will look gorgeous no matter what. I am going to get mine cut Saturday (and colored) so I'll be posting my new 'do' soon as well. I think I'm gonna go with seven inch layers.

  • Awesome! :D

  • Thanks so much guys...

  • Love it!

Like I've said before, what would us rockabilly gals do without you!

    Love ya dollface! <333

  • Great video!, I loved it! :D
