The democratic Wiemar Republic failed largely because of the huge reparations from WWI that the allies foolishly piled on Germany. The ensuing economic hardship was the vacuum that Hitler filled. I just watched Der Untergang which is a brilliant film I highly recommend it, but it made me realise that although his actions were monstrous he was a clever and extremely manipulative but successful leader.
