u must read this. once u have started there is no turning back. a little 10 year old girl was raped and murderded in 1945. her body was not found until 1947. then a boy last week read this and did not copy and paste this message. the dead girl appeared in his room haunting him and killed him. if you do not copy and paste this onto 10 vidoes in 30 minutes the dead girl will apear in your room tonight and haunt you and kill you. well you better start to copy and pasteing
Bringing RoR into this tutorial has complicated the topic. The title is HTML / CSS / Javascript. Using Ruby on Rails is an implementation choice and should be reserved for a specific tutorial.
You use a complicated way of doing a simple task. I'm sure Rails, like PHP, can do this with one single file. Rails is for more complicated projects (I saw the Heinmeier guy make a blog system in 15min) and so this is just confusing.
I think that what I'm trying to say is that you seem to have chosen /too many/ audiences. The main content introduces a PHPer to Rails, but the way you explain it seems to target a basic HTMLer.
Im a php/python/perl programmer and I must say I've never liked frameworks, but after switching to django for python, im simply in love. No more painful admin area, just work on the front end as we are meant to do :). Rails is very much the same way. Oh and Andrew you have talent with communication skills, you make it seem so eaasy though.
andrew out of curiosity - what program did you use to record you using your mac? I actually want to make a similar video this week and I am on OS X as well.
Really kool demo. I was watching a Ruby on Rails tutorial somewhere else on youtube and that guy had me lost from the start. This was amazing. I'm pretty fluent with PHP. What would you prefer? Ruby or PHP? But I have to say, setting up a server is much easier for a noob with Ruby.
I've been trying to learn basic scripting for years, I taught myself HTML, and though I follow you, I don't feel I know enough to try it myself. Even after watching the video. Thanks for the tutorial though! Ill try again next time.

Good tut but php is much nicer...
From what have eard Ruby is a bit basic... (Yet its not easy to code!!)
PHP is my fav...
Also PHP seems better documented, on Codecall (thats a .net not a .com) PHP had around 1000 threads ruby had 20-50??

what is it about ruby on rails that everyone likes it? WHY is it better than php? for me rails doesn't look easier at all..
skt159159 5 years ago
took me a LONG time to like it. I was a php guy for years. Now I love it though. Hard to explain, you just have to do a project with it to see.

how long did it take u to learn it?
skt159159 5 years ago
I had the book sitting on my shelf for over a year, but when I finally sat down and really tried to learn it, a weekend.

If you are gonna do PHP use CakePHP. CakePHP is like a rails clone for PHP. But I still like Ruby and Rails better!

If you don't use it already, go and get Locomotive then Textmate both for mac. So much easier/better than using the terminal the whole time.

I used to think so too, but once you learn vim you'll be amazed how much better vim is for everything. Free too!
