the 318 has always been the most popular version of this motor,and for that reason is an excellent candidate for a high-performance upgrade ,you can find performance parts in almost any parts catalog,and they're cheap when compared to the big blocks,mainly because there hasnt been a big block chrysler v8 made since the early 80's and they were truck motors.Saying a 318 is junk or cant be modded/upgraded is just ignorance speaking.This video makes me sick,as it should all car/truck enthusiasts.
The first LA series 318 came out in '67 with 230 hp stock single exhaust,and 2bbl carb and was basiclly bulletproof,I had one in a '68 Coronet 440 2dr HT my first car,and I have owned a dozen or so since,including my current 1998 1500 .There were several versions of this motor, from the 273ci,318ci,340ci,and the 360.they were all the same damn motor though just different bore and stroke,and they all performed and lasted the same,solid .So to argue about which is a better motor 360/318 is silly

You can't easily make a 318 high preformance it's just a stock junk engine that you cant do shit with. The best dodge engine is the old school Hemi.

Out of interest, we use to use sodium silicate in our foundry to mix with sand to make cores. If I recall correctly, (not guaranteed), we would soak the finished casting in water to dissolve the core (or more correctly the binder agent with the sand). Has anyone tried pouring hot water into one of these engines to loosen it up again? I realise the pistons and crank etc will need grinding / replacing but at least it may free things up enough to pull them apart to repair.

@1977F150408 318's have been around since the 40's basically. they came from the old 3`8 poly's (short for polyspherical combustion chambers), then became 318 ci "LA" engines, short for "late A" engines because they were designed a little while after the rest of the "A" engines. Then became sequential fuel injected "magnum 318's" in the early 90's. your a fucking tool, anything else you want to know?
@1977F150408 they're also one of the few engines to have "made offspring".. the 3.9 liter v6 is nothing more than a 318 with the last 2 cylinders chopped off. Im unlucky enough to have one of those in my truck... they're a dog, but will never fail you if you take care of it

I owned a 360, crankshaft snapped, that, and the dash fell through, an transfer case busted, Im done with Dodge. Theyre cheap, over-dressed, over-expensive vehicles. I never ow another one. Out of interest, we use to use sodium silicate in our foundry to mix with sand to make cores. If I recall correctly, (not guaranteed), we would soak the finished casting in water to dissolve the core (or more correctly the binder agent with the sand). Has anyone tried pouring hot water into one of these engines to loosen it up again? I realise the pistons and crank etc will need grinding / replacing but at least it may free things up enough to pull them apart to repair.

@nonamejoe56 Yes, GM has made some pretty ordinary cars - over here they made the Camira. In the line of Wednesday engines are 289 Windsor, 318 Chrysler (we had these in trucks over here in Aust and nothing would catch them), and the Chev 350 (although I prefer engines with 27 on the end - 327, 427). The old 318's, you couldn't kill with an axe. They reckon that the 318 in trucks were the first petrol truck engine you could run all day flat out and not burn the exhaust valves out of them. Cheers

@1977F150408 318's have been around since the 40's basically. they came from the old 3`8 poly's (short for polyspherical combustion chambers), then became 318 ci "LA" engines, short for "late A" engines because they were designed a little while after the rest of the "A" engines. Then became sequential fuel injected "magnum 318's" in the early 90's. your a fucking tool, anything else you want to know?

@1977F150408 they're also one of the few engines to have "made offspring".. the 3.9 liter v6 is nothing more than a 318 with the last 2 cylinders chopped off. Im unlucky enough to have one of those in my truck... they're a dog, but will never fail you if you take care of it

I owned a 360, crankshaft snapped, that, and the dash fell through, an transfer case busted, Im done with Dodge. Theyre cheap, over-dressed, over-expensive vehicles. I never ow another one. I believe on the luck of the draw though with the big 3. 1/20 trucks you get will be good the rest some kind of defect.

of course it took forever to kill that 318, because it's one of the best motors Chrysler ever put in their vehicles aside from the hemi. If you did that to the 4.7 litre engines that replaced the 318, it would have been blown alot sooner than that.
