  • I can definately see why Tony was chosen to play Norman Bates. What a shy, sweet, awkward lad he was then. Made you feel sorry for him. He played that character SO well.

  • Awww...Look how adorable Tony was then....and he's faking an Aussie accent. Clever boy. And he never lost that beautiful smile. Missing you, Tony.

  • holy crap, those screams from the girls.......Tony must've really been quite a pin up for many a young girl :-P

  • Babyfaced Tony w/ the million mile lashes <3

  • TONY IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!

  • Zsa Zsa cracked him up

  • so awkward and charming. love him.

  • the girl at the beginning was kind of a dimwit but she was still funny

  • listening to this with headphones sounds like the whole thing's going on in the back of my brain, trippy

  • I just don't find her that funny, but Tony seemed to get a kick out of her.

  • I don't understand all the Zsa Zsa hate...I think she's great.... loopy and hilarious!

So much more fun to watch than the personality free "stars" we have today.

  • He is SO adorable! I loved his awkward little look ^_^

And the screaming girls at the start :P

  • You have to remember that he was a HUGE heartthrob, that's why there's all the screaming girls about. He was probably the equivalent of what Zac Efron is today, except Tony Perkins could actually act.

  • Yes a huge heartthrob who also caused a huge throb in the pants of fellow actor Tab Hunter, who was Perkins' boyfriend back in these days.

So I wonder why there weren't more "screaming" boys about the audience for this show?

Oh yeah, because it was 1959, and still the era when decent, civilized persons didn't behave like a one-person, freak parade, such as the "Perez Hilton" types of today.

  • @gymnastix

    Hahahahahahahahaha... good!!

  • @gymnastix tony perkins was gay?

  • @okonh0wp yuup, but he never came out of the closet. He also married a lady and had kids. his widow died in the 9/11 attack.

  • I love you for this comment :))

  • Oh, thank you! But it's true! Tony could act.

  • Whoa!!! I take it back! Zsa Zsa was just in the 1959 WML episode. My bad. But my God, she was stupid!

  • At 5:30, Tony does something with his mouth that's right out of "Psycho", in the scene where Arbogast is questioning "Norman". As a "Psycho" freak, this just jumped out at me. Fun to see the pre- and post-"Psycho" WML's together!! And what an freaky coincidence that Zsa Zsa was in them both - AND obnoxious in both! LOL! Tnx Daemona!

  • Absolutely right about that. i noticed that too.

  • Oh this was before Psycho?i thought when he was asked if he was a man or a woman the laughing was about that lol

  • Yeah, this was one year before Tony made Psycho

  • Psycho was made from 11/30/1959 to February 1, 1960. So maybe it was a few months before.

  • And "Psycho" was released June or July of 1960. So this was clearly before.

  • I love it when he hid his face... he's so sweet!

  • WML is still entertaining after all these years: one reason are the post game interviews where we get to see the stars as people. John Daly and Martin Gabel both get interesting responses from Perkins, who is certainly in his early luscious period.

This appearance comes a little before Hitchcock hired him for Psycho.

In 1960, Perkins appeared as a panelist (plugging Psycho) in a funny WML episode featuring a contestant who was a tall female Arkansas justice of the peace.
