I got told I was going to hell when I was in middle school, it was a very conservative parochial school though, they tell you you're going to hell if you like cats. Anyway I was only 12, I didn't even have any exposure to religion prior to that, children are born without faith. I just didn't come brainwashed like their kids were so that was a problem. I think a lot of whom they counted as religious are for the most part atheist: they go to church once each christmas & easter, never read the bible, etc, but just as a formality or tradition. The so-called "closet atheist" if you will (who just carry the religious label), but also those who deny their atheism outright out of cognitive dissonance as well. Many people in their hearts don't believe in god, but refuse being called an "atheist," an ironic contradiction.
