  • The Marilyn photo was especially beautiful at the end.

  • My Favorite rendition and Kinks song too!

  • Amazing intro! Dave Davies' solo is flawless!

  • I wish my life was a non stop hollywood movie show

  • one of the best live albums ever

  • what a fucking awesome track. im lovin it

  • I heard this version for the first time in Mexico City on Rock 101; they used to play classic rock all day on Sundays. I've never heard this song on radio here in the States, sad.

    The intro gives me goosebumps.

  • Classic Kinks! Ray gets his point across and Dave beats up his guitar with maybe his best solo.

  • Sadly , I really miss the Kinks !

  • One of the sweetest intros ever. Up there with intro to Sweet Jane on Rock 'n Roll Animal.

  • awesome intro into this song, great guitar chops on this badboy............

  • Ray Davies is genius-The Kinks are at the top!

  • This is one of those songs that just never gets old. I love it as much today as the first time I heard it so many years ago....

  • Excellent version. Pure rock and roll at it's best.

  • When they started this song at the Landmark Theater Syracuse NY on this tour, everyone in the audience sat down and lit their lighters as we sang along... it was magical.

  • had this lp great stuff!

  • they are the ron paul of rock!!

  • Seen them 1979 in Memorial hall Kansas city Kansas. May very well be the most enchanting evening of music i have experienced. True live performers

  • @rodrik Memorial Hall!! Lived in KC and went to every concert I could. Had connections thru Capers Corner. Wish I would of saw the Kinks! Love this song.

  • The kinks have always and forever will be a better live band than a studio band. I have had the good fortune to see them live 5 times. Love the intro to this

  • What a beautiful intro. They could have gone on for another hour or so.

  • This song gets better every time I hear it! Listening to it for the last almost 40 years.. Ray Davies is so underrated...Rock on

  • Fuckin' Wow - awesome!

  • Sorry for the rant and rave but it is a shame not to have footage of Dave's intro ! IMO no guitar can cry and whine like Dave's. One of the true pioneers of r-n-r.

  • IT's piss poor and down right disrespectful that no-one in the Kinks organization could or would make the effort to post a live version of this recording ! I take it as an ultimate insult as a dedicated Kinks fan ! There was a gentleman not to long ago begging and doing everything possible to make it a reality and he was shunned ! And not to mention that we deserve to SEE Dave's magic ........not HEAR it ! Shame....Shame.....Shame !

  • It almost sounds like Slash on guitar

  • This is the best version of this song by anyone.

  • I can just picture Dave with his Les Paul putting down this guitar intro.. Man was he underrated. God Save the Kinks!

  • And what astounds me is ray davies left out a verse in this live classic. It goes- "if you covered him in garbage, George Sanders would still have style". WHY RAY? that my favorite line in the song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This song will be played at my funeral

  • seen em twice. wish it had been more.

  • My God. I wish all guitar solos had purpose like this one!

  • Best version of a great great song. Saw them do this live at the Ally Palais..fantastic.

  • Wonderful introduction to this live version, in truth, the whole album is very enjoyable. Dave's voice has a unique hue that gives character to The Kinks. Many people remember their first successes, but seeing them in perspective, like good wine, improve with time. Long live the Rock'a 'roll.

  • I much prefer the studio version of this song over the live version, if you want to really hear Dave tear it up on this album, it's on 20th Century Man.

  • Wow, thas last picture (Marilyn) was the perfect ending for this masterpiece!

  • I have walked down Hollywood Blvd, and I found myself dodging, sometimes from walking over a star's star, LOL, it makes one think of them, people you have seen in movies but not in the real world. However, I heard this song in it's original release on the top ten radio hits, BEFORE, I ever went to L.A. and I always loved the story style of the song and the visual imagery; so years later, guess what song popped in my little head, when I was there, as a sort of movie soundtrack to the place?! ; )

  • First concert I ever attended was The Kinks. This is arguably the best version of this song. The intro is magnificent. Thanks for posting.

  • been playing guitar a long time......heard many solos.....this will stand up to any of them.....as good as can be.....his attack and timing are incredible.....Dave Davies a true guitar pioneer !!!!!

  • amazing

  • Ken5244's comments about this song and Lou Reed music are dead on. I miss the well produced layers of music that were abundant previous to hair bands and grunge. Gonna Jump on the old folks bandwagon. The majority of todays entertainers can hold a candle the likes of the kinks.

  • @keisterbunny1

    Hi,

After reading your post (thanks, BTW), I just wanted to reiterate that I'm NOT a Lou Reed fan. The other comment about the solo in "Sweet Jane" was by another poster. Just wanted clarify that.

Pre-emptive strike: For any Reed fans out there, don't take offense. His music just isn't my cup of tea.

  • An amazing piece of music. The first 2-plus minutes could stand on their own. THEN, A well done song continues. Ken5244's comments about this song and Lou Reed earlier are on the mark. I miss the layers of finely produced music that was abundant previous to hair bands and grunge.

  • bizarre, I love this song but it seems there are different versions. there is one that mentions Mickey Rooney. this live version doesn't have that line????

  • Cool vid. Singled out the fellas during their moments.

  • It's amazing that this solo was done live and not in the studio- it couldn't have been engineered any better

  • @Ken5244 Ken, You may like this! Same careful crafting of guitars with a soaring finish. Intro to Sweet Jane -- Lou Reed from Rock & Roll Animal. The two guitars are Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner.

  • @houseof4doorsmc

I heard that a long time ago and vaguely remember it. I can't stand Lou Reed, however, so I'm not eager to revisit any of his music (good guitar work or not).

No offense, of course, and thanks anyway.

  • @Ken5244 None taken. If you were like me, you would kill the music after the guitar intro which is fairly long. I'm not a big Lou fan either although Transformer is ok. The world's most depressing LP might very well be "Berlin" by Reed. I wanted to jump off a cliff after I heard it. :>)

  • incredible opening solo- anyone have the tab?

  • this song has never met a butt it couldn't kick. if this is not one of the great songs in rock history,i quit.

  • @jr55ful Absolutely Agree 100% ! The best ever especially live!

  • Definitely the best visual interpretation of Celluloid Heroes!

    Beautifully done!!

Embellished with Dave's incredible guitar work.

  • the kinks should be on hollywood blvd just for this song...if not a star...just replay this song continuosly in all the cafes, bars, and souvenier shops on the blvd where heroes never really die....

  • Love those two songs......I think many British "blues' players started to listen to American country and what evolved into southern rock. I hear alot of Toy Caldwell in this solo.

  • Best song they ever wrote...

  • there's definitely the aura of mystic going with the 'kinks'...ive gown up with them and i liked them more then 'stones' and 'beatles'...

they kept their pure artistry off, off mainstream...

    thanks for the wonderful post!

  • @buubacous

    You're welcome. :-)

  • Dave's guitar solo beginning at 0:33 should be required listening for every aspiring musician. Unlike so many "shredder" guitarists who play a zillion notes that mean nothing, Dave crafted a melodic, lyrical and soaring solo here that exemplifies what musicianship and song craft should be about. Listen to the way each phrase builds on the one before it, with just the most perfect choice of notes -- all with genuine emotion, energy and GREAT tone.

Talk about catching lightning in a bottle. :-)

  • @Ken5244 Well stated Ken. This is my favorite rock song of alltime. I too recognize the brilliance of Dave Davies in how he constructed the intro to this song. Todays artists just don't get it. It takes time to understand your craft. And learning to WRITE great music isn't just tossing out a few insipid lines and then shouting over the words. I am so grateful for having lived in the same generation with greatness. Lightning indeed.

  • @Ken5244 Thank you for expressing what I always wanted to say about Dave's marvellous intro. You and some more people on this page know a lot about great music and appreciate Dave's guitar playing and enormous contrubution to the Kinks' work.

I'm so glad to see that I'm not alone with that breath-taking feeling when listening to this wonderful piece of music.

    Really made me happy!!

  • @nogrouchy

You're welcome, and thanks for your kind words towards me as well. As you can see from the other comments in this thread, you're definitely not alone re appreciating this song. It is, as our friends the Brits like to say, "bloody brilliant."

  • @Ken5244 ABSOLUTELY DUDE! This is a first rate solo.

  • @Ken5244 may be the most accurate statement here. On all of Tube. 100% agree.

  • @Ken5244 I built a sniper map for Call of Duty 4 and I have a radio in it thats plays Dave's Solo. Incredible piece..

  • @Ken5244 Amen. . .well stated. I've admired this version from the first time I heard it. I couldn't agree more. Dave Davies is a genius with composition. He seems to hear that symphony inside his head and then goes out and lays it down . .note for note. Perfectly. Sadly, too many guitarists don't realize that carefully crafted songs STILL work. This is my alltime favorite song. Especially this version. I consider it a masterpiece.

  • @Ken5244 Couldn't agree more. I was blessed to have an older brother who introduced me to the Kinks and other bands that really shaped my appreciation of music. This is one of my favorite songs on one for the road.

  • @Ken5244 Dave's guitar solo beginning at 0:33 should be required listening for every aspiring musician. - I agree! I'd like to learn how to play it if I could find the tab. This album is the first album I ever bought as a kid. I played it until the vinyl turned white from being scratch by the needle.

  • @SMPSKIPPY

It was probably one of the first ~ 10 hard rock records I bought. Re the tablature for the solo, I've

never seen it. It surprises me that no one has transcribed it after all these years; or maybe they have and I just missed it.

I wasn't aware of the George Sanders lyric. Thanks for the tip. For whatever reason, he also left out the lyrics about Mickey Rooney in this version. So I guess we should only give it 9.5 stars instead of 10.

    [ Get it? "Stars"? Sorry. ;-) ]

  • @Ken5244 This is my favorite song of all time. . and I go back to the '60s. Your description of Dave Davies' brilliance on this song is spot on. Never read a better testament. He was so underrated but not by those who truly realized what he meant to music. Thanks for the well versed praise. He deserves every single word.

He was a pioneer with a guitar.

  • @kilts4u2

No problem. Was glad to do it. Thanks for the compliment.

  • Amazing, GREAT intro too.

  • Can anyone Guitar Tab the intro? One of the greatest. That's Rock and Roll!!!

  • this is my favorite favorite version of this song I've ever heard....brings be back to memories of my brother Glenn who died in 1991 at 35 years young....rest in peace Glenn and thank you for bringing this song to me xoxo

  • "Success walks hand-in-hand with failure..."

not sure if original to the Kinks, but definitely true about life.

  • Love the guitar solo at the beginning!

  • By far the best version of this song, love that two minute intro. Great job on the video as well.

  • Great intro! Anyone have the guitar tab for the intro?

  • @gobugeaters Yeah, but in this performance they leave out the line about "....dearst Marylin..."

  • This is my favorite version of this song. I 1st heard it when I was a school girl back in the 80's from my Dad's vinyl record collection. He still has it and recently bought a new turntable so he can still enjoy his vinyl lps. I'm rediscovering The Kinks music these days. They are great in my opinion. Saw Ray on Letterman a short time back. They did You Really Got Me with the chorus section. Wow, it sounded great! I agree this video is nicely done. Christian, are you related to Ray or Dave?
