I heard this version for the first time in Mexico City on Rock 101; they used to play classic rock all day on Sundays. I've never heard this song on radio here in the States, sad.
When they started this song at the Landmark Theater Syracuse NY on this tour, everyone in the audience sat down and lit their lighters as we sang along... it was magical.
@rodrik Memorial Hall!! Lived in KC and went to every concert I could. Had connections thru Capers Corner. Wish I would of saw the Kinks! Love this song.
The kinks have always and forever will be a better live band than a studio band. I have had the good fortune to see them live 5 times. Love the intro to this
Sorry for the rant and rave but it is a shame not to have footage of Dave's intro ! IMO no guitar can cry and whine like Dave's. One of the true pioneers of r-n-r.
IT's piss poor and down right disrespectful that no-one in the Kinks organization could or would make the effort to post a live version of this recording ! I take it as an ultimate insult as a dedicated Kinks fan ! There was a gentleman not to long ago begging and doing everything possible to make it a reality and he was shunned ! And not to mention that we deserve to SEE Dave's magic ........not HEAR it ! Shame....Shame.....Shame !
And what astounds me is ray davies left out a verse in this live classic. It goes- "if you covered him in garbage, George Sanders would still have style". WHY RAY? that my favorite line in the song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wonderful introduction to this live version, in truth, the whole album is very enjoyable. Dave's voice has a unique hue that gives character to The Kinks. Many people remember their first successes, but seeing them in perspective, like good wine, improve with time. Long live the Rock'a 'roll.
I much prefer the studio version of this song over the live version, if you want to really hear Dave tear it up on this album, it's on 20th Century Man.
I have walked down Hollywood Blvd, and I found myself dodging, sometimes from walking over a star's star, LOL, it makes one think of them, people you have seen in movies but not in the real world. However, I heard this song in it's original release on the top ten radio hits, BEFORE, I ever went to L.A. and I always loved the story style of the song and the visual imagery; so years later, guess what song popped in my little head, when I was there, as a sort of movie soundtrack to the place?! ; )
been playing guitar a long time......heard many solos.....this will stand up to any of them.....as good as can be.....his attack and timing are incredible.....Dave Davies a true guitar pioneer !!!!!
Ken5244's comments about this song and Lou Reed music are dead on. I miss the well produced layers of music that were abundant previous to hair bands and grunge. Gonna Jump on the old folks bandwagon. The majority of todays entertainers can hold a candle the likes of the kinks.
After reading your post (thanks, BTW), I just wanted to reiterate that I'm NOT a Lou Reed fan. The other comment about the solo in "Sweet Jane" was by another poster. Just wanted clarify that.
Pre-emptive strike: For any Reed fans out there, don't take offense. His music just isn't my cup of tea.
An amazing piece of music. The first 2-plus minutes could stand on their own. THEN, A well done song continues. Ken5244's comments about this song and Lou Reed earlier are on the mark. I miss the layers of finely produced music that was abundant previous to hair bands and grunge.
bizarre, I love this song but it seems there are different versions. there is one that mentions Mickey Rooney. this live version doesn't have that line????
@Ken5244 Ken, You may like this! Same careful crafting of guitars with a soaring finish. Intro to Sweet Jane -- Lou Reed from Rock & Roll Animal. The two guitars are Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner.
I heard that a long time ago and vaguely remember it. I can't stand Lou Reed, however, so I'm not eager to revisit any of his music (good guitar work or not).
@Ken5244 None taken. If you were like me, you would kill the music after the guitar intro which is fairly long. I'm not a big Lou fan either although Transformer is ok. The world's most depressing LP might very well be "Berlin" by Reed. I wanted to jump off a cliff after I heard it. :>)
note: monitor your vitals while deploying intent and see what happens ;-) a most worthy investment: ex. OMRON HEM-650n Auto.Wrist Blood Pressue Monitor
the kinks should be on hollywood blvd just for this song...if not a star...just replay this song continuosly in all the cafes, bars, and souvenier shops on the blvd where heroes never really die....
Love those two songs......I think many British "blues' players started to listen to American country and what evolved into southern rock. I hear alot of Toy Caldwell in this solo.
Dave's guitar solo beginning at 0:33 should be required listening for every aspiring musician. Unlike so many "shredder" guitarists who play a zillion notes that mean nothing, Dave crafted a melodic, lyrical and soaring solo here that exemplifies what musicianship and song craft should be about. Listen to the way each phrase builds on the one before it, with just the most perfect choice of notes -- all with genuine emotion, energy and GREAT tone.
@Ken5244 Well stated Ken. This is my favorite rock song of alltime. I too recognize the brilliance of Dave Davies in how he constructed the intro to this song. Todays artists just don't get it. It takes time to understand your craft. And learning to WRITE great music isn't just tossing out a few insipid lines and then shouting over the words. I am so grateful for having lived in the same generation with greatness. Lightning indeed.
@Ken5244 Thank you for expressing what I always wanted to say about Dave's marvellous intro. You and some more people on this page know a lot about great music and appreciate Dave's guitar playing and enormous contrubution to the Kinks' work.
I'm so glad to see that I'm not alone with that breath-taking feeling when listening to this wonderful piece of music.
You're welcome, and thanks for your kind words towards me as well. As you can see from the other comments in this thread, you're definitely not alone re appreciating this song. It is, as our friends the Brits like to say, "bloody brilliant."
@Ken5244 Amen. . .well stated. I've admired this version from the first time I heard it. I couldn't agree more. Dave Davies is a genius with composition. He seems to hear that symphony inside his head and then goes out and lays it down . .note for note. Perfectly. Sadly, too many guitarists don't realize that carefully crafted songs STILL work. This is my alltime favorite song. Especially this version. I consider it a masterpiece.
@Ken5244 Couldn't agree more. I was blessed to have an older brother who introduced me to the Kinks and other bands that really shaped my appreciation of music. This is one of my favorite songs on one for the road.
@Ken5244 Dave's guitar solo beginning at 0:33 should be required listening for every aspiring musician. - I agree! I'd like to learn how to play it if I could find the tab. This album is the first album I ever bought as a kid. I played it until the vinyl turned white from being scratch by the needle.
It was probably one of the first ~ 10 hard rock records I bought. Re the tablature for the solo, I've

I wasn't aware of the George Sanders lyric. Thanks for the tip. For whatever reason, he also left out the lyrics about Mickey Rooney in this version. So I guess we should only give it 9.5 stars instead of 10.
@Ken5244 This is my favorite song of all time. . and I go back to the '60s. Your description of Dave Davies' brilliance on this song is spot on. Never read a better testament. He was so underrated but not by those who truly realized what he meant to music. Thanks for the well versed praise. He deserves every single word.

This is my favorite version of this song. I 1st heard it when I was a school girl back in the 80's from my Dad's vinyl record collection. He still has it and recently bought a new turntable so he can still enjoy his vinyl lps. I'm rediscovering The Kinks music these days. They are great in my opinion. Saw Ray on Letterman a short time back. They did You Really Got Me with the chorus section. Wow, it sounded great! I agree this video is nicely done. Christian, are you related to Ray or Dave?
The Marilyn photo was especially beautiful at the end.
