China's driving schools are really really weird. They teach all this complex crap like starting from 2nd gear, but don't teach basic stuff like driving and keeping a safe distance. (manual transmission) This is so freaky. Oh and they insist you drive a manual, even if you tell them that your car is an auto.
This is what happens when you can buy a drivers license and the test has nothing to do with real world driving skills. It is scarey. I really hope China can rectify this. Let's hope the glorious CCP will start taking its job more seriously one of these days.

The Chinese cannot drive. It is that simple. 30% simply lack the ability to judge time, space, distance, acceleration and deceleration. I see this every day. They drive up to a person, vehicle or obstacle and they don't 'see it' until they are 5 meters away.

I've been living in the PRC since 2002 and I will say that the reason why Chinese roads are so unbelievably dangerous is not because of "incompetent drivers", as the nobles in Beijing so disingenuously say, but because of the total lack of courtesy, manners, common sense, civic responsibility, proper training and law abiding of nearly all mainlanders on every road. To top it off, law enforcement exists here only to protect the government, not "Mr. Wang Dingdong" driving back home from work.

However, the issue is that Beijing says that it is "incompetence" in such a way as to play down the fact that at least 85% of mainlanders are extremely rude, selfish and thoroughly lacking in common sense. In other words, they hide the real reasons behind dangerous roads -- it is a social issue, not an issue of training alone. Any person that has been in China for more than a few days, particularly ourside the three or four largest fake cities will find this to be self-evident.

1. Most of the Asian countries do driving exam in a closed circuit, unlike U.S. where u have to test on the road, which allows are the idiots on the road.
2. Chinese and many Asian people IN ASIA has no respect for law let alone traffic law, nor respect for human life, they usually don't give way to pedestrians, asking them to obey the law is like asking them to die!!
To the second point, some streets in Asian cities are too busy such that legally giving way is sometime infeasible, if one does not want to wait for hours for a safe gap.

It's not caused by the high population or any ideology. Other places with high population densities have well ordered driving. It's caused by a lot of inexperienced drivers driving in big cities for the first time.

I've recently come back from China and the standards of driving are dreadful.
The things that shocked me most were the standard of maintenance of most vehicles and the numbers of vehicles I saw without lights. This included several crowded buses (including one with all the interior lights on) and an articulated lorry laden with logs.
I have noticed that some of the worst drivers are little ASIAN ladies with glasses sometimes no GLASSES! but young and old asian drivers do some crazy stupid shit, one time I saw a lady pull into the train tracks and she was confused as to why her car didnt move so she got out and was staring like a blind person. The question might seem racist but why do they not know how to drive and how do they get their licenses

I was on a bus and the freakin driver kept driving down the freakin wrong side of road forcing on coming traffic onto the shoulder.
We all made this asshole stop and WE threw him off the bus.. He called the cops and we told them what happened; they arrested this asshole. Co. sent another driver.
Problem is 'Guanxi'. In China you can literally get away with murder if you have the right connections. Enforced traffic laws, heavy fines, loss of license impounding of car or bike. It would work eventually but because of the culture of Guanxi (read corruption) it will never happen.

For 11 years since I went to PRC for the first time, I have heard plenty of cases where people got hurt or even killed by traffic accident. Although China claims its technology in transportation is catching up with HK, Japan, and Singapore, lots of flaws and failures remain unsolved.

I lived in Zibo, Shandong for a year and man...the roads are a little hairy there to say the least. The inner cities aren't too bad cos you can rarely build up the speed to do much damage...but those highways? stay well clear!

I've recently come back from China and the standards of driving are dreadful.
The things that shocked me most were the standard of maintenance of most vehicles and the numbers of vehicles I saw without lights. This included several crowded buses (including one with all the interior lights on) and an articulated lorry laden with logs.

and it's not getting any better, but quite the opposite: when I visited Beijing in 2004 traffic was chaotic, but slow; when now revisiting Beijing last month I was shocked: traffic chaotic like before, drivers are incompetent like before, BUT given all the new streets and street extensions built for olympia 2008 traffic is often less congested, so people are driving faster. Accidents, which before at low speed resulted only in a fender bender and a brocken leg now at higher speed cost lives

What you don't realize is that the number of private vehicles is increasing, partly due to that fact that an increasing number of Chinese citizens are becoming more affluent, and this means many of them want expensive taste for luxuries, such as cars.
Even though more roads are being built, it won't make much difference in the traffic of urban centers of China. There are some who do take buses, taxis, or bicycles; but they will have increasing difficulties trying to get through the roads.

Problem is 'Guanxi'. In China you can literally get away with murder if you have the right connections. Enforced traffic laws, heavy fines, loss of license impounding of car or bike. It would work eventually but because of the culture of Guanxi (read corruption) it will never happen.

How can they build a mp3 player the size of a child's thumb that holds 3000 songs, internet, cameras, GPS and Sat radio and not be able to operate a vehicle 30 times their body size? Sorta like that question thrown at the wise old owl... (How many licks does it take to...) "The world may never know".

Because they only manufacture, they don't design those things. The Japanese and Americans invent all those things, the Chinese just make it, the easy part.

ha ha ha this makes me laugh and that is the capital!!! Beijing!!! Should have filmed other places just as bad or alot worse, it is going to take alot longer time to educate these people how to drive and also most important mannerisum, no pushing and shoving and making spitting alot more discreat.

I lived in Zibo, Shandong for a year and man...the roads are a little hairy there to say the least. The inner cities aren't too bad cos you can rarely build up the speed to do much damage...but those highways? stay well clear!
