@gymmfreaky ikr!! This happened to me (not the exact thing) and it hurt like crap!!!! I basically fell all weird and ended up with a bad sprained ankle. Was out for like 3 months :(
That's not it at all. She was so over-rotated (bad form doesn't help here) that she couldn't get a hold of the bar. Grips have nothing to do with the technical error she made here.
Rough looking at first, but she actually had good falling technique. She didn't hit anything stiffly or fall on her hands, was kind of able to turn and fall on her back. The wild legs make it look scary.
lol no, its totally fine dont worry about it. youre right: it actually IS a geinger, it just has one more added twist (1 1/2 not 1 1/1 like i accidentally said below.
@gymnast768 hey calm down. I know, I did read the entire conversation I was saying how you're both right, you said its called a def, she said its a gienger with a full twist, you're both right, thats all i was saying
Piskun's deltchev is probably my favorite release skill ever on UB. It's amazing she walked away from that fall on the def. She was an extremely tough competitor!
Piskun is one of the ONLY women to ever attempt a Def on UB. Show some respect. No Chinese woman has ever competed that skill, so insinuating that a CHN gymnast could teach Piskun how to swing that move is laughable.
it is indeed laughable. Perhaps he does or IT doesn't know that Chinese are built differently that's why they have their own style. Yelena is also built differently. and INDEED, I have never seen a CHINESE woman ever attempt a Def. That will be the day.
it wouldnt have been easy actually to stretch her arms out and catch the bar. even if she did she would hav esevere whiplash and end up with a back injury, but she's okay at least thats good
She was over-rotated and could not catch the bar. It looked as though she thought she let go too close and piked her body to avoid hitting the bar with her feet/legs. She's a tough cookie, that's for sure, and won a much-deserved bar title in 1996.
To the guy who who wants to call someone a bad name for not knowing a skill. It's not a "deaf", it's spelt "def", and it wasn't even a def at all. It was a full twisting deltchev. :-)
land on her back. How could she land on her back from that angle. The bars are not up on five meters height and she's not a cat for goodness sake. There is no time to land on your back.
It looked like she turned on purpose to avoid a face full of mat. Watch the slow motion again, she stops twisting to catch the bar, misses, then pulls her shoulder over again to land on her back. Because she landed flat on it, it was probably safer than going face first because you instinctively put your arms out in from of you and that can cause all sorts of fracture-related trouble.
Elena Piskun is a great gymnast who always showed a lot of courage and resilience. She was world champion on UB (1996) and HV (1993). She was seriously underscored and undermined at the 1996 Olympics where her performances were better than the scores indicated.
Your chances of breaking something are far greater landing on your stomach (hands and legs/feet). On your back, you can round it a little and it's the strongest/safest position the body can be in. Pretty much every high level gymnast is taught how to fall on every skill they learn.
at least she kept her toes pointed..

What is the name of the skill she fell on? I haven't seen that done before.
dewhite001 1 year ago
@dewhite001 It's called a Def-a Gienger with an extra full twist. For gymnasts who do it nowadays, look at Youna Dufournet or Elisabeth Seitz.

It was actually meant to be a Def. She used to have a Def and a Deltchev in her bars routine. A Def is a Geinger with a 1.5 twist.
