Seven months after the tornado a still from a video shot looking east at the airport has emerged. It is not unusual in this type of tornado for people not to realize they caught it till quite later. That photo shows what this photo shows, a ragged rotating large chunk of clouds, some appearing to connect with the sky, some appearing to connect with the ground, some appearing not to connect with anything, with all sorts of offshoots. Indicating a large, violent storm not easily identifiable.
Ok, this is such a coincidence. Nearly 3 quarters of my family are born on the 22nd of some month, including me. My baby cousin was born May 22nd, 2010. Joplin tornado was on her birthday. April 22nd, St Louis tornado. I can't remember some others, but the tornadoes were pretty bad.
I live in Maryland Heights 1 mile or maybe less from Harmon Estates the tornado rolled right through the other half of my subdivision making the other half of my subdivision mostly uninhabitable It was Scary as Hell and I will never forget the roar of the wind and just getting an oddfeeling and grabbing my son and running for the linen closet since we are lucky it didnt shift more towards the direction of our side of the subdivision or my son and I would have been gone since we have no basement
What a great video. The clouds are awesome. I also like the creepy sirens in the background! Funny, just now I heard a huge long rumble of thunder and it made me jump. Ooooo. Storm's coming!
The storm was nearly identical to what raged on for hours before the February, 1959, F-4 in St. Louis. In that tornado also the funnel cloud was amorphous and never clearly photographed, though onlookers said at the Arena and Forest Park Highlands, where the community college on Oakland is now located, two side-by-side funnels were visible, one hitting the Arena, the other the Highlands (bending the gigantic steel ferris wheel in half horizontally!).
Whats up with all the tornadoes lately? I realize it's that time of year, but we hardly ever get such strong ones in such major areas... with such frequency! Makes you wonder if it has something to do with all the earthquakes.
Thank you all very much for the nice comments. Footage were taken between 5pm - 7pm CST from Florissant facing south east. The entire cloud was rotating top to bottom, there was not a funnel or wedge that could be seen easily due to the rain as mentioned. I could make out the core when there was lightning on the south east side of the cell, those pics look just like an x-ray, kind of cool.
Fantastic video with the stills in the midst. The sound of the sirens is enough to make my stomach tight! Did the sound of the sirens just drown out the sound of the thunder?
@mekales The sirens are close and super LOUD but if you listen close you can hear a single bird chirping in the background and me shuffling my camera around a little, that's it. It was eerily quiet after the storm past my location. Before the storm and during the storm the thunder was shaking the walls of my house. We had bad conditions for 10 mins then everything was gone, perfect for getting clean pictures.
Yep. I was out taking photos. To Golfgranny58 there was no funnel seen because it was rain rapped. The twister was in the big column going down to the ground. It came down about 50 feet from my parents house and then started it's destruction path.
we had these bad tornados and storms in arkansas, our lights went out, and we had a funnel cloud close to the ground, but they did not sound the sirens,, but i do not know why, if you do can you please tell me.
