I grew up in the 50's and 60's listening to the OP trio. I was thrilled to go see Ellis in Nashville's "Exit / Inn" club about 1980. I had a front row seat. When he came out, he was a stumbling drunk. He slogged through 2 tunes. Then dropped the guitar, made a disgusting comment and walked off the stage.
Fantastic and informative; but the filmmakers should know that John Coltrane died of cancer, NOT heroin addiction. Oscar seemed to be one of the few really famous artists who never had a drug addiction period in his career, which is something to be proud of!
He was the consummate jazz pianist. His playing embodied all the elements of music done with taste, vigor and creativity at the highest level. It just doesn't get any better...
He is one of the greatest there has ever been on the piano. The other great one would be Art Tatum, of course. I was lucky enough the see Oscar play at the Ritz in New York in the 70's. He left way to soon and could play with one hand better than most two handed players.
@gjc82071 That's Christopher Plummer, he's being interviewed too - start watching at 11:10. Fellow piano player, also an actor (that's mentioned later, when Oscar is composing a score for a movie Christopher Plummer is in)
@waho123 yes yes. I recognized the voice immediately, and though I knew it wrong, all I could think of were the names Max von Sydow or Ian McKellen. I like Christopher Plummer. By any chance, do you know the name of the movie being scored? If not, do you know what year this was made? With that info, I can check it againstPlummer's filmogrophy & extrapolate an estimated date for the movie.
@cjlee28 It's the same @pianotuner101 asked me about too - "When Summer Comes", one of his originals. You can find a video of him performing that live in Vienna in my channel.
Friends, you are invited to enjoy a *new* master class on the great Oscar! Topics include Oscar's runs, solo arrangement techniques, chord voicings, etc.You will dig this, promise! Type in "Dave Frank" Oscar in YT.
@pianotuner101 That's "When Summer Comes" - a tune that Oscar wrote in 2002. There's him performing it from "A Night In Vienna" in my videos, YouTube won't accept the link in here for some reason (video ID would be FyzGjTQu1Cs )
Thanks for this ! Really interesting documentary about a giant. I just miss an analysis of his playing style, would have been even greater. Anyway amazing stuff !
