wait a second this doesnt make sense if this game was made for japan only why is text of game in english i mean if you make a video game for your country only you could put it in your country s language
I just downloaded this. Yeah, it's pretty much made in hell. I got to world 3-1, and guess what? I went down a pipe... yeah, just a regular old pipe... and when I got the coins and came up, guess where I was? The warp zone! I'm like wait, that was easy?! I went down the pipe before reading the number 1 above the pipe, and before I could react, it took me all the way back to World 1-1. Good god, I am dumb. X-(
you can also get it on gba (game boy adv.) it is a part of the famicon mini series and for some reason you can play it on american and european equipment look it up on google shopping it is pretty expensive for a new one of course, but about $50.00US used
Just got it today and it is hard, but the ability to continue can make someone play for hours. This happens because the continue only sets the player back to the first level of the worl they are on. It is alot more durable than starting over a game. Also, the Wii does save the players current location, so a player never loses there current spot unless they restart.
@NonstopRam The original Super Mario Bros. also allowed players to start back at the beginning of the world in which they received a Game Over. By holding down the A button on the start screen, the player resumes in the first level of the most recently-played world. The sequel only simplified the feature.
I had this game was in the Super Mario World & Super Mario All Stars SNES game cartridge. It was pretty difficult. I actually still have a working SNES and the game. Im feeling nostalgic ima go play it.
I liked watching you die at the end cause I wan't sure if you were human at the beginning. For someone who's prime was 20 years ago, you do pretty good. I bet age calms you.
Actually, it wasn't Nintendo of Japan who decided not to release this game in the US, it was Nintendo of America, who found the game to be frustratingly difficult and non-innovative.

Actually theres somthing wrong with you because as you were saying if you dont know how to play and your watching this video, MAYBE ITS BECAUSE THERE JUST LOOKING HOW GOOD THE GAME IS
I think it's unfortunate that a lot of people don't know about the real Super Mario Bros. 2. I don't really see the game as being extremely hard to the game-testers. But yeah you're right it is more chanlleging. I never played SMB2 to be honest, but I like to give it a shot at it someday.
This is a great game. Nintendo should have released this game in the USA in the 80's. I know that many players will disagree with me, but the Japanese version is easier than the American version. In the Japanese version I can save the princess without warping, but in the American version I would have a hard time getting to world 4.
A while back when nintendo released the classic line for the gba they also released the Japanese versions in japan and since the handheld games arnt region protected I'm able to play it threw the gameboy player attachment for my gamecube or on my ds :D
it makes me wonder why doki doki panic, i dont care it was fun but why that game? why not contra or metal gear. its strange. but hten what the hell is a doki doki? deserves to be remade.
I just recently downloaded this for my Wii, and it is a hard game. I'm only on world 5-1 and have abused the hell out of the continue screen to even get that far.
I guess that Nintendo thought that the characters in Doki Doki Panic were better for Mario, so they kept most of the characters from Mario 2, like Birdo and Shy Guy.
I never understood why they never released it to the USA.
I mean, in this game you find a lot of things that would be suited to later games like Super Mario Bros. 3 or Super Mario World (SNES) where the mushrooms have actual faces and where you can actually rebound higher when stomping on an enemy.
This game right here is the one responsible for all the future changes in game-physics, if you will of the later super mario brothers games.
@surfco It was a marketing decision - when it was test-played by US gamers, they found it frustratingly difficult. At the time, it was typical for Japanese made games to be released in the US/Europe at an easier skill level. This game was indeed difficult, and they just decided to not release it at all so they wouldn't sour people to the Super Mario experience.
@dommiesan In addition, this game was never made in cart form for the NES/Famicom. Since the Disk System never came out in the US, it would have been more expensive than the typical game to produce because they would have had to convert it to cart form. They did do that for some games that were extremely popular (Zelda, Metroid, etc.), but not all because of the cost.
@dommiesan I know this sounds crazy, but I'm sure I saw it on a japanese import cartridge when I was a kid. I saw the demo playing in the window, but I know it was the game in cart form. The owner didn't let anyone play it, but I saw the cart plus the american adaptor
@surfco The SMB2 that the rest of the world got introduced famous concepts of gameplay still mimicked today, such as picking up weapons from the ground, or going up or down instead of left or right. Many of the enemies are also still present, such as the shyguys and bomboms. This 'game right here' is a redo of the original, and I found it, aside from the difficulty, boring and dull.
@TheMusicvent Both SMB2s are Miyamoto games, and both were included in the SNES collection, so they both have legitimate merit as entries in the series. One was created specificially for the niche market of hardcore fans of the original, and the other was initially made as a tie-in for an unrelated cartoon, so neither is really a definitive sequel (that distinction would go to SMB 3). As such, dismissing one as "just a rehash" or the other as "not a true sequel" seems sorta pointless.
@surfco So you think Super Mario Bros 2 never changed the future game metarials?!! How about vegetables, throw-kill abilities, Mario's all rounder pover, Luigi's long jump but hard recover, Toad's speed , Peach's hover ability. They all effected the future changes! So I still prefer Super Mario Bros 2 but I play The Lost Levels whenever I want great challenge.
It is impossible not to recall my childhood listening to the music of Super Mario, is like stepping back in time, funny after more than 20 years, never able to turn it
There is also a 3rd direct port of this game for the Game Boy Advance but it was released only in Japan on a yellow cartridge. It's part of their take on the Classic NES Series.
I don't know how gamers can call him marry-o. Mario would punch the shit out of you idiots like a brick box if he could. Hes not some happy fucking christmas bitch. Marr-e-o Mario HES A FUCKIN MAN man, I like you vids though dude
so accents give morons the right to slaughter an icons name. If my name is Mike and you call me make, were gonna have some issues, I don't care where your from or how you talk. faygs.
I remember a memory I had when I first played a Super Mario Bros 2 game at age 5 it was the American version (Doki Doki Panic clone). A year later I played a game on the Famicom Disk system in Japan with the same name and I was just thinking "Hmmmm this is a little different to the one I played before". Since I was only 6 at the time I ignored it and just played.
im currently playing this on GBC...and you are dead right, this game is hard. it has many jumps that have to be perfectly timed.....especially levels 8-2 and 8-3.....it reminds me of adventure island. in later levels and is setup to run full speed through. im glad i picked this up as an adult.
Actually, they didn't released this game in America because The game testers thought it was too difficult, also the 1980s NOA President Howard Lincoln didn't like the game as well cause of the difficulty.
That's right, Nintendo didn't release SMB2 in the West till the Super NES/Famicom Super Mario All Stars cart during 93'. I've played it once or twice on my SNES and that was enough for me lol.
Nintendo Japan are sadists and masochists to devise a game like that. I suppose they wanted to offer a challenge but SMB2 goes far beyond that and into insanity lol.
I dont get this review. Back in 1990, when I was a kid, I played THIS game you see above on NES. RIGHT HERE IN AMERICA. Not only did I play it, I played it every day. I still remember how to get through it. So it makes no sense to say it wasnt released here.
Also, to say its phuckin hard?! Funny. I had a blast with it. Yes there were some moments of frustration. But that made it better in the end. Dont know how I ended up with this game, but I had it. No doubt. Store bought.
You must be confused. Before the Virtual Console on the Wii, the only time this game was close to released outside of Japan was in Super Mario Allstars (SNES) but it was a watered down version that was easier and an unlockable in Super Mario Deluxe (GameBoy).
You have another 2 choices. They reproduce NES carts with The Japanese SMB 2. Also on Super Mario Deluxe there is a version that it states is for "Super Players"
yes i have the game lol i guess i jus have more hand eye coordination like i can fly threw games like this its really not hard i can beat it with out dying once as well as all the ninja gaidens and hard games like this no offense its jus funny to me seeing how many times u stop and pause just run threw it and get the controls down like its u controling the game
I agree with the creators of this. This game is HARD. This probably explains why in the remake for the SNES when you get a game over and choose to continue you start on the current stage you are on rather than the beginning of the current world like in Super Mario Bros. I beat this game but I died a lot. Still a good game, just very difficult.
If anybody wants the rom of the REAL Super Mario Bros 2 (Japan), message me. I finally found a working rom, after days of searching. It's the Famicom disk version.
i just cnt believe u died three no four wait no five times n world 2-1 oh wait six omg thats hilarious you suck bad thats not that hard lol i subsribed i like the videos but u deserve to get this message how old are u man i can breeze through that in 20 minutes lol u have lost all hand eye coordination lololololol so funny im sorry
They should've released the real super mario 2 in north america. I don't care if it's hard I just want to play the real super mario 2. The doki doki panic version for SMB 2 sucks
omg i am so confused.on super mario all stars on the snes they have this game because i own it(well i have 1,2,3 and lost levels which it is that one in this level)
could u send me this game i dont have any wii points cuz they dont sell them in germany, mannheim i hate that my dad got deployed there for 3 years so i was wondering can u send me this as a gift
You can also play this game on the Game Boy Color version of Mario 1. i think its called Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. After you beat the game, you open up a "Luigi game" which is super Mario Bros. 2.
Hey Dom, search for FC 3. I want one of those, just to have it. I'm starting to wonder if they have a machine to allow you to back up all of your games to it and play them from an HD. No, NOT an emulator, but an emulator of ALL emulators! I'd love to house all of my NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Turbo Grafx16 HuCards and CD, Neo Geo and 3DO games all in one place. maybe the companies should come together and license such a machine?
Eh, the Yobo FC3 isn't something I'd get into. It uses proprietary controllers, and those FC clones tend to not run 100% like the original systems.
As for backing up, you can do it but you'd need an eeprom burner. What you'd do is find the rom and burn the chip. If you can't find the rom, you're backing up, you'd need to dump the rom first. Stuff like CDs shouldn't be too hard, but HuCards would be tricky.
Good video Dom, but um.. I'm not sure if I blinked, but you mentioned Luigi's play controls and costume, but you did not switch to it man. WHEN I had my Wii I almost bought this game. They have a free demo on the Smash Bros disc.
Yeah, I know. I recorded the footage first, then researched. I didn't realize until later when I was recording the narration voice over that Luigi had different character physics. Had I known when I recorded the gameplay I totally would have showed it in action. But I felt I had to mention it at least. Like I said in the video, it was my first time playing. :)
If they REALLY did not release it because it was too hard then how come they released a HARDER version of Ninja Gaiden 3, which was already infuriating, in the US ?
The difficulty of SMB2 was the main reason they never released it, but it wasn't the only reason. Another big factor was that the president Nintendo of America didn't like the game and felt it wasn't innovative enough, as well as too hard for Americans.
You really thought NG3 was harder? I ate that game up after getting ticked that my Jump and Slash move has NEVER returned to the NG series from part one. It was by far the best move and made the game a since to beat. Hmmm, I guess that is why they removed it. Also, I learned how to wall-climb-jump to get to higher inaccessible places in NG1, but in NG2+ they gave him wall climbing ability (weak!). The SMB2 (JPN) was a slight cause of frustrating play level, so, hmmm.. "Aw.. We we U.S.ians."
I also didnt know anything about this game, until I played it as "The Lost Levels" on the SNES... and I agree, this game did feel harder than the rest of the series...
But I still liked the version of SMB 2, or Doki Doki that did come out... just my opinion...
Great reveiw! I remember playing this on the SNES growing up. I didn't realize that the game was different other then the facelift. Thank god for the Virtual Console on the Wii. Other then that the system in my opinion is horrible (outside a select few games).

They should've released the real super mario 2 in north america. I don't care if it's hard I just want to play the real super mario 2. The doki doki panic version for SMB 2 sucks

Oh, okay, no harm no foul. I'll just look up Luigi on here later on. Good review as always man!

If they REALLY did not release it because it was too hard then how come they released a HARDER version of Ninja Gaiden 3, which was already infuriating, in the US ?
Karakta 3 years ago

It's not really what I think or don't think. Enemies in NG3 do TWICE the damage they did in the japanese version.
Karakta 3 years ago
That is strange. It almost sounds like a programming error.

I agree man, NG1 I had all these tactics down and then they took out the need for em in 2 and 3
that pissed me off...

Thank you for another great review.

I also didnt know anything about this game, until I played it as "The Lost Levels" on the SNES... and I agree, this game did feel harder than the rest of the series...
But I still liked the version of SMB 2, or Doki Doki that did come out... just my opinion...
Anyway... as always, great work Dommie!!

Great reveiw! I remember playing this on the SNES growing up. I didn't realize that the game was different other then the facelift. Thank god for the Virtual Console on the Wii. Other then that the system in my opinion is horrible (outside a select few games).
