  • that happens to me. just the same way. Mother and sister and the whole family.

  • Homeopathy is some strange stuff. I'll never understand why people take meds that don't have studies to back it up.

  • I have that same issue with my family, including everyone here because we have different positions on existence...I feel ya...

  • I want to emphasize that I'm not talking about "A BELIEF," but just about "BELIEF." IOW, the mental process of those people seems to be "OK, first, what BELIEF should I work from when addressing this issue"...and then they will address the issue. Everything has to have some belief association with it, and it's interesting that they seem to even KNOW this, and don't even CARE what the belief IS....but it's just part of their cognitive recipe that they believe SOMETHING....ANYTHING.

  • Great points. When you talk about your sister and homeopathy, it confirms what I've discovered: MANY people seem to have a key cognitive dissonance that it is important (even NECESSARY) to have BELIEF. Somehow, it seems their brains don't work (or they don't know how to "approach" the world) unless BELIEF is involved with their cognitive process.

I have a feeling that particular cognitive error forms in early childhood, and is so deep and central that it's hard to change....

  • The problem with live discussions that try to find the truth is that it's really easy to present a flawed argument that appears to contradict the other side argument.

And often the burden of checking the argument validity goes to the other side.

If you get caugh again in a debate like that, my humble advice to you would be this: try to push the fact checking back to your mother/sister when they do this. Ask them 'how do they know that', ask for valid sources and dismiss the hearsay.

  • "reason" i mean.

  • We're atheists. We have radical christian relatives. And we live in BH. Yes, it sucks big time. Stay strong sister. Reasons will eventually win (not in our lifetime though).

  • nice reflections..........subbed

  • My mom is similar to yours so I empathise.

  • Your family sounds ALMOST as bad as mine, except my step-father.

They ask me why I will argue/debate at the drop of a hat, and I to tell them it's because I care.

One thing about opinions, is that if you don't express it, with conviction, you might as well not have one.

    Great vid!

  • Well, I, along with all the other people who actually use their minds as opposed to believing fairy tales can sympathize. But something that we all have to understand is that there are people out there with horribly weak minds, and those people will believe certain things because it brings them comfort. And comfort as opposed to truth is what alot of people would prefer. So other than that, try staying sane :)

  • *hugs*

  • I feel your pain, and btw, your sister needs to be thrown into a shark tank lol.

  • @edenscancer lol

  • What I find is that people are frustrated at how difficult it is to be a scientist, you need to get your good grades, degree, etc. Some people say biology/chemistry/math/physics are "difficult", so they don't want to bother with science so come up with something easier to understand or to makeup for lack of science :S

I kinda know how you feel, but it's my parents who are in lala land, my brothers are not.

It's too bad we can't clone an entire person :| Would love to see more skepchicks.

  • as hard as it may be, try to talk to her, and see things from her side, sure you may have to "turn off your brain" for that, but try to give it a try.

I'm not saying that they are right (and you are correct in being right), but the problem you have here, is not that she's wrong, the problem is that you can't find a way to talk to her.

when you attack some, they become deffansive, so don't "attack". ask about it, try to learn, and get her to learn about it by "explaning" it to you.

  • When they come with that agenda accusation the next time quote Randall Munroe from xkcd:

"You don't use science to show that your'e right, you use science to become right."

And if you became right, you have to stand by what you know to be true.

    knowledge > belief

  • Hello beautiful. Good to see you here again.

  • *hugs* I know exactly what are you talking about Dani ! My family don't like to hear my arguments either because they feel like they all life support is being distroyed and it's not easy to admit that they believed a lie all of their life . That's why you get you sis telling you she would still believe even if you prove to her that it doesn't actually works because she won't admit she was wrong all of her life.

    just my opinion

  • *HUGS*

There's lots of crazy out there, and an easy way to drive yourself crazy is to try and purge it from other people. Focus on being a good example of what you believe in (scepticism, rationality, and human compassion) and let them see that you DON'T burst into flames/die horribly/live a miserable life from not buying into that stuff.

  • Here's what you do. Film yourself taking an super-overdose of homeopathic medicine. (Read out loud the warnings on the label first.) Then the following day show the video to your family.

Before you show the video just say "don't worry I'm fine."

At the end of the video explain that "there's no active ingredient in homeopathic medicine so there's no risk of overdose. There's no health advantage either."

  • @AtheismTV I love those demostrations

  • @explosivoification the worst part is my sister is studing to be a nurse!I hope university changes her world view at some point, or she will become one of those people with a degree in health who support pseudoscieneces =P

  • @danihc That's a scary concept, imagine the damage a nurse who has those beliefs could do.

What country is homeopathy recognised as medicine? That's insane!

  • @explosivoification

Brazil is not the only one. In the EU there are EU dictated regulations about homeopathy. You are wrong if you think they are instructions banning the use of that shit.. nope.. Homeopathic "medicine" are regulated by the same body of EU states that regulate real medicine - giving the shit more credibility.

Doctors aren't getting sued to death for using this shit, so some of the lowlife scum who somehow survived medical school take fat money from homeopathy med. lobbies.

  • @AtheismTV That was actualy what started the whole discussion..I was telling them about the demonstration of homeopathy overdose that hapened recently and for them that means shit. They either deny my evidences or they say they dont CARE about my evidences lol

  • @danihc That's just bluff. If you do it yourself they'll get scared and then that will plant a seed in their minds.

  • @AtheismTV I try to avoid discussing this with them, but I was ofended when my mom said that those people in the demosntration had nothing better to do with their time and how that was silly....when in reality that a big problem in my country, since homeopathy is reconized as MEDICINE, when it clearly isn't.

  • It gets easier. I promise. Maybe you should just be grateful you'll go through life actually experiencing reality rather than living a lie.

  • @philhellenes Thanks Phil <3

  • I feel for you, but I understand your view on trying to fit, especially when it is your family.

  • likin' ya new do

  • Yes. We pro-science folks are clearly a part of a vast global conspiracy to improve the well being of humanity, and its understanding of the universe.

  • Sounds a lot like my family. You are not alone.

  • Same here only less "severe", my brother and I were buying some medicine for my dad and I looked at it and it said nontherapeutic I asked why are we buying since it says it won't make anyone better(I checked and its more of a supplement than medicine) and my bro says that its what my father believes, I tell him we are wasting our money and he repeats again. I saw where this was going and just shut up on the way home.

  • You don't have to believe that bs to make yourself happy, tell your sister or you mom if she feels that she has to believe in something to make her happy, thats fine, but thats not what makes you happy. the TRUTH makes you happy.

  • I can't tell you how many times I've wished that I could just "go along with what the majority believes" because the position of the lone skeptic can be quite the lonely one. I'm still dealing with that. If you have a different opinion about people's cherished beliefs, everyone just gangs up on you without even considering what you are saying.

  • science has got just as many if not more practical uses that religion..........logic, speaking/grammar..........LOGIC buddy, that's science, so you need SCIENCE to argue religion....you can't use religion to argue against SCIENCE.....but u can use religion although a MUCH DIFFERENT more logical version (called history) to figure out "SCIENCE" tadah, now u have a gun, go shoot it in the air, and let bygones be bygones!

  • your not awkward your just really cute

  • i like ur homeopathic comment i never thought of it that way it does kill people
