  • Dr Steel is as much dieselpunk as he is steampunk. We define these genres thematically, as opposed to through beats or instruments or other physical quantities, and because these are alternate pasts that have never existed what defines them ultimately is completely subjective. It's not for me, or anyone else other than the viewer to decide, so please, let's stop bickering about who's a what-now and just enjoy the good music :)

  • @OhMyGodItsAChimney I have tea! :)

  • Dieselpunk? Clockpunk? Arcanepunk? Dear Christ, this genre is turning into the "core" clusterfuck.

  • @xenigirl

My best guess is that watchmakers use magnifiers and glasses one eye at a time for their whole life and that can only worsen their eyesight as they get older

  • Is it bad that it took me a few re-watches to realise there was a women in that picture?

  • This is more Clockpunk than Steampunk.

  • @LordHerzdieb ...please don't tell me that clockpunk's a thing... I'm having a hard enpugh time keeping my genres straight as it is...

  • @MrLeomonkey07 As is arcanepunk.

But like dieselpunk they are sup genres of the steampunk genre.

So in theory there are four different genres in steampunk works:

    Steampunk, clockpunk, dieselpunk, and arcanepunk.

  • @MrLeomonkey07 If you were talking about the actual story then maybe it would be clockpunk, but the actual music is completely steampunk music.

  • this song is brilliant. wicked, kind of frightening - but brilliant. why aren't there more?

  • I love the clockwork quartet!

I wish that they made musicvideos :3

  • @TheLadyDawner We all do :)

  • @TheLadyDawner It's like the Carling adverts. Clockwork Quartet don't make music videos. But if they did, they'd probably be the best music videos in the world.

  • XD

  • Just heard this on 8tracks. Terrific. Please don't call it "steampunk", though--that label is too stupid to tolerate.

  • God, People. Dr.Steel ISN'T FUCKING STEAMPUNK HE'S DIESELPUNK.

  • @feh2 agreed

  • @feh2 you shouldnt use God's name in vain you know.

  • @NegaZxyz urrrrrrrghhhh

  • @NegaZxyz God's name isn't "God", it's Jahve

  • @CingerNebojsa or maybe it's FSM, I'm not sure

  • @feh2 does'nt mean he isn't popular in steampunk culture.

  • Fantastic music. Though.. how would someone be a watchmaker if he had bad eyes?

  • @xenigirl Nearsighted?

  • @xenigirl in that day in age you would be working by candle for long hours at a time and it would cause a lot of eye strain that would over time cause you to become blind.

  • @xenigirl He could have had magnifying glasses or a loupe for when he worked. In fact, it seems feasible that a watchmaker would use a loupe anyway.

  • I love that the time signature is in 3/4. With the ticking carrying the rhythm, you'd expect it to go tick-tock, tick-tock, 1, 2, 3, 4, but it doesn't. It's three beats per bar. That's totally intentionally, and wickedly clever.

  • 666 likes, and 6 dislikes. Oh dear.....

  • wow i love this its amazing

  • I never heard this kind of music before, I normally listen to Avril Lavigne and The Beatles, but this sounds good too :D

  • i love this & the doctors wife. Is there any others by them?

  • @Quinnknights i think they are in the process of releasing more, I know im ready for more too.

  • there songs are simply intoxicating.

  • Pure genius.

  • Apprentices didn't make any money.

  • Wow...so powerful and dark!

  • Wow, lately every new song I find is just too amazing for words...this is at the top of that list...

  • This makes me think of 'the wall' for some reason O.o

    Awesome!

  • Moral of song, never piss off someone who can make time bombs XD

  • I like the way they tell compelling and eerie stories with their songs.

  • 4 people left the back window of their workshop open.

  • I have to ask, does anyone here think that what Mr. Macarthur did was that bad? He fired his apprentice in exchange for a machine that would ultimately help his business and earn him more profit, so what? If the apprentice knew enough about clockwork to make a fucking time bomb/pocket watch then why didn't he just open his own damn shop instead of ruining the life of a poor old man?

  • @Misfitbby The lyrics are very similar to old fables and rhymes, I guess common sense is always replaced by better story telling in these things :p

  • @Misfitbby Because making a fucking time bomb pocket watch is the more fun option. ;) Personally, I would've just trashed the machine. Or maybe just trashed the machine AND made the pocket watch. Just for good measure.

  • @Misfitbby Well, this is not a fairy tale, this is a horror story. ;-)

  • Someone needs to make a short aniamtion about this......it'd be so cool.

  • there's a genius behind these lyrics

  • i can just imagine the singer telling this story in a straightjacket while smiling

  • Anyone interested in hearing Hugo (the singer)'s other band, Arch Stanton, should go here and listen to 'Waking Giants' - another of his absolutely incredible songs, in a totally different style propmeup.co.uk

  • hehe took me like the 5th time to finally understood the song XDDDDDDDD cleverly wrtiten lyrics indeed ^^

  • Gah I love the steampunk subculture. Its so classy yet so unique. :)

  • This song is like never-ending, and thats all i need :D

  • WHO could hate this song? It's awesome!

  • As a real watchmaker's apprentice, should I REALLY be getting ideas from this song? LMAO! ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!

  • I've always been obsessed with clocks..... and this song made me fall insanily more!!!!!!

  • They're great! they should really make more music

  • I swear it, I fix tickers, please don't let that woman look at me...I'll send you out the door, make her go away. o.O

  • have these guys made any other songs? besides this one and the doctors wife?

  • @ShufflerFacey

I don't think they did. Which is a shame, they're amazing.

  • perfect. perfect perfect.

  • Well...thats harsh.

  • i cant stop listing to this song maybe its time i buy the album i think or a cool vid comes out for it only can hope

HINT HINT for the talented HINT HINT

mind you dont do it if you gonna make it look like crap that would just ruin a good song and there are ass loads of you shitty animates out there ruining cool songs.

  • Yeah...

I want a steampunk style musical now based around these characters and sung by these creative men. Maybe the plans and plots of each character in seperate chapters leading up to a climax that involves them all?

  • so evil... i was thinking of that Tim Burton musical with Johnny Depp and butcher shop

  • The more I listen to this the more I love it. I eagerly anticipate anything new this band has to offer! They're a talented bunch.

  • A nice flow to the song, devilish lyrics, a great execution... I only wish the Quartet had more songs...

On the brightside, this track helps me get into the spirit of the Steampunk novel I'm writing...!

  • @TheLightYagami That is technically true, yes. This would probably falling under the clockpunk genre, but honestly, considering many of the people and - by extension - bands at large who considers themselves steampunk, but are just fancily-clad goth, well...

  • This song is creepy and amazing at the same time...

  • Clockwork Quartet is Steampunk, to my mind... as opposed to goth bands dressing up steampunk.

  • @fascinoma Clock Punk, you mean.

  • I heard just a couple of days ago that they are working on more music.

    I can hardly wait.

  • This is so magical! =D

Funny how some lines serve as a metaphor (how I love those) ; P

:I'll tell you that clockwork's a powerful thing,

There's a terrible strength in those tightly wound springs,

A gentleman's pocketwatch stays by his heart,

And that's where the damage can start."

  • i want to like steampunk, but its a big wank fest

  • Sounds like Brian Eno

  • I would love to see this as a short film

  • This is amazing. I want to do a video for this now. I shall be using this all through NaNoWriMo to draw information from it.

Thank you so much for posting this!! We all greatly appreciate it :D

  • I always saw this narration as given face-to-face in a victorian era train with a prominent window.

I can actually visualise the camera angles for this, but lack the equipment to pull it off.

The vision of this work is almost intoxicating, with a taste like an old sherry caske, but I doubt I could do this song or that vision justice.

This song isn't just auditory, it's visual, olefactory and even has a taste to it that must be blended togeather into a true work of art that this diserves.

  • @darkwartexx Wow, well said. It is a great piece of art indeed, and I envision the tale unfolding as I listen to its baleful progression.

  • my friends and I are considering doing just that.

  • That put a smile on my face, great story :P

  • I really wish I could find a place where I can download their songs D:

  • @Emmelina93 Go to their homepage, its in the description. You can find MP3s of The Watchmaker's Apprentice and The Doctor's Wife there. Free, too.

  • @Emmelina93 Just go to their website

  • @Emmelina93 You can get this one and another at their website, its in the description of the song....for free! :)

  • @Emmelina93 try typing in google yt converter and it'll come up with something that'll cobvert the url to mp3 :D

  • Torrents.

  • Ruskeydoooooo

  • i wasn't particularly fond of this song at first... but now it's been growing on me. XD i think it's my new favorite~

the lead singer has an awesome voice.

  • I love that steampunk songs usually sound like the songs from "the demon barber from fleet street" its just so beautiful.

  • How delightfully indie...

  • personaly, i picture Nicola Tesla making lightning cannons for airships while listening to this

  • I'm vividly picturing an awesome video for this song...

  • Do they have any other songs than this and "The Doctors Wife" yet, or are they still working on new songs?

  • One of my friends showed me this song. Now, I'm completely addicted to this song. Its so catchy! LOVE IT!! And yes, this does sound like something Poe would write. He's completely awesome. Or Lewis Carrol.

  • I was talked into listening to some steampunk music today by a friend, and this is the first song I've heard. Ummmm... Wow. I'm hooked! So deliciously evil!

  • delightfully sinister song. i love CQ's stuff, i hope more songs come out soon.

  • I love this song.

  • This is a good song for Sylar's character on Heroes.

  • @danigirl00 It's too bad they're cancelling that show.

  • I love this song first one I heard by them and am now officially hooked on Steampunk music. Thanx guys gave me a whole new genre to look forward to.

  • I do believe that this will be added nicely to my listening playlist while I write.

  • Hauntingly beautiful. I'm hooked! :D

  • Someone needs to make a fan video for this song

  • @luxordtimet agreed!

  • @imonlywinded Off Button Productions will attempt this :D

  • @luxordtimet ill get right on it :D

  • @luxordtimet Also agreed! There just aren't enough fan vids for steampunk songs. I'd totally do it if I had the talent.

  • @luxordtimet I am working on making a music video ;)

  • @luxordtimet definitely

  • @luxordtimet I'm in the possess of making an animated short for this.

  • man this song is freakin awesome so dark and great

  • now, im new to these guys, as in so new i only discovered them about 10 minutes ago lol, how many songs do they have i have searched everywhere but i can only find 2? this, and the Doctors Wife....

  • @MusicianJester1295 They have other songs because they did a live show of sorts late last year, but as far as recordings go those two are all we have to listen to... Over and over... and over.

  • @rubiximus I was at the live show last year. The new songs are awesome. They keep promising to record them, but other projects keep cropping up. The Magician, for example, just opened up a new nightclub called Salon D'Ete in London. Worth a look - it's VERY in-keeping with the theme.

  • @MusicianJester1295 They only have two songs released now. More will be coming this summer.

  • I have this on repeat on my ipod. :D

  • after listening to this song iw sas speechless for at least 10 minutes the story of the song stuck with me for so long. just amazing

  • Delightfully vindictive.

  • Nice song in true Poe spirit!! It reminds me of The tell-tale heart <3

  • As the song goes along it begins to show more and more that the guys a crazy person

  • Crazy, but genius.

  • This is amazing. No other word for it.

  • His voice and way of singing is really sexy.. TCQ are plain awesome!

  • Do they actually have more songs that this and the doctor's wife? I absolutely love them! Especially when the singer get's emotional and begins to "yell", he sounds like a madman :D

  • I don't think they do.. At least not up, but they do play live as far as I know, so they should have more songs o0

  • Oh okay. Then they should tour in Denmark so I can hear the other songs, ha ha :D

  • Omg if they did I had to go..

  • They've got several more songs coming out in "Early 2010", which will all be released under the Creative Commons Act. What that means for us is... IT"S FREE :D!

  • OMGEEE! :D Exciting, now I can't wait!

  • The best definition I've ever heard for steampunk is; "What the past would look like, had the future happened earlier." xD

  • splendid, and a greate definition :P

  • @WireMosasaur And: "it's an era that never was, but one that we all wish had been"

  • @WireMosasaur i put thumb down but it was by mistake

  • @WireMosasaur i put thumb down but it was by mistake i give you a THOUSAND THUMB UP

  • @nightmareofshadowvil Awww, thank you! ^__^

It's not my quote, and I wish I could remember who I saw write it. (it was somewhere on LiveJournal a looong time ago)

  • Such a marvelous story~

  • wow :O

  • the most perfect invention that still kept impecable time...thats what you call a perfectionist

  • simply marvelous!

  • it all worked out like clockwork... epic!

  • Brilliant music, the song just took me back to the victorian age. 5*

  • relaxing and somewhat uneasy at the same time, basically it's brilliant.

  • absolutely amazing..

  • You MUST MUST MUST put this on iTunes. Or something of the sort. It's absoballylutely brilliant, and I want it, and I would pay for it.

  • You can download it at their website. x3

  • @ChatQuiTeVoit Not sure if this is overly late or not, but they have a website with the MP3 on it?

  • Am I the only one that imagines an alternate history where Edgar Allen Poe wrote science fiction while hearing this?

  • that would freaking rock!

  • An alternate history were Nikola Tesla never invented Alternating Current, therefore dramatically reducing electricity's potential uses and preventing the second industrial revolution. That would mean that clockwork and steam powered machinery would become our primary technologies

  • Thats not necessarily true. AC could indeed have been invented and even be in use in a steampunk universe. The importance of it is in the aesthetic of the world itself and your own personal view on steampunk. As for myself, I view the advent of AC as an important factor for producing other fundamental ideals of steampunk, such as the rayguns ;P

  • @Tragaloth

    Steampunk...

An alterna history where the internal combustion engine was never invented, electricity is fine and a common theme in the steampunk genre. The Internal Combustion engine is pure Evil! ;)

  • @imonlywinded just had to reply to your comment cos i had had exactly the same thought as i listened to this song then i saw what you'd writen and was like wow! great minds !

  • Do remember that Poe actually did write some science fiction.

  • Really? I didn't know that about Ray Guns being used by Poe... darn make to the drawing boards. Only people online now whats what with Steampunk my real life friends ain't got no clue

  • @markermage OMG! An amazing idea!

  • @markermage Sir, if ever I have a Time Machine, I shall now play stuff like this around Poe and see what he writes.

  • @markermage Your right! This IS an Edger Alen Poe story, isn't it? Props to the Quartet...

  • This is Steampunk music in my ears. Most of what is labelled Steampunk is too synthey and emo/postpunky for my taste. CWQ: Make more songs! Do a CD! I want more!

  • YES!! YES YES YES YES YES YES YES! I hate it when friends suggest ridiculous "steampunk" bands that always miss the mark. This is beyond perfect... I just wish they'd pay us a visit here in the states! :(

  • I agree.

    THIS IS STEAMPUNK!!!

  • I agree and disagree, this is the most steam punk band out there for sure, miles above the rest, but Abney Park is still close (ish)

  • Comment removed

  • filled with hate (:

  • This is, quite honestly, one of my favourite songs of all time. Well done, absolutely well done.

  • I like the story of this! It's incredibly ingenious!

  • I just wish there was more Clockwork Quartet in the world.

Frankly, I just wish that there was more steampunk bands...Well, good ones, anyway.
