Did you mean "there is no 'proof' what lies deep down."?
Actually there is more and more "proof" about the trait of high sensitivity including a nice 8 page article in the August 2011 issue of "Psychology Today" and another nice article about sensitive children int he Nov./Dec. issue of "Scientific American Mind" Both articles you might find interesting and enlightening. All the best, Jim
The problem with an HSP is that they are much more susceptible to Narcissistic Personality Disorder. I know because my father, an HSP, has that personality disorder.
Hsps normally dont like going on car rides because of the presence of roadkill. It is very upsetting for them. That is one reason why they like staying at home.
Mainly what it (HSP) is is that what some people confuse as being a lonely life is what HSPs describe as living in peace and quiet, which is the BEST lifestyle. Plus, your family and friends will many times include lots of animals and as few humans as possible.
@MrOHRA92 HSPs can have anxiety, social or otherwise, but not all people with anxiety are HSPs. Read Elaine Aron's book or check out the tests online to find out more about HSPs.
lol!! my fam think i'm rejecting them just cos i need to be alone sooo sooo much. don't tell them this, but it is a kind of rejection cos some of them are ding-bats! i cut people out my life a lot too, bear grudges etc.
im an hsp and an extrovert!! insanity ensues. I derive energy from everything its crazy - i really would imagine being an introverted hsp is that bit easier. :((
The trait of high sensitivity is an inherited trait so I'm going to guess that if not in your immediate family unit there are some HSP in your family tree... it's sometime interesting to search them out because they are kindred spirits and you may understand each other better than maybe you did in the past. Just a thought. All my best wishes to you! and I hope you have a very nice weeken! Jim
I took the test and hit the top score...it is comforting to know 15-20% of the population share this. My family are the opposite...lack empathy. I wonder how many sensitives grew up in insensitive families?
@springrobin yep - i'm very desensitised in many instances, (depression doesn't help). detached. i can come across to some as slow, kooky, born-yesterday, naive, and very absent-minded (of course, it's very indicative of a LBS) and i think with extra stress it becomes more pronounced. dunno if this answers your question
Are any of the following traits of an hsp; hyper-vigilance, hyper-focus, distractibility, divergent thinkers, insomnia, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, racing thoughts, specific speech traits (not completing sentences, being tongue tied, swift topic changes) the need to/emphasis on categorizing things?
Yes, I've heard of and run across in different HSPs all of the mentioned characteristics and some have many or just a couple. In my coaching practice with HSPs they learn how to make rational rather than emotional decisions which really seems to help! All the best, Jim
Not until recently did I realize I have also picked up others emotions from people on TV. And all that time, I just thought it was me. Good to know the truth, though at times I doubt myself & wonder if it's all me and not them at all. BTW JIM, would you believe I'm a peacemaker, a human rights activist? Since 1995 :-)
@JimHallowes , Let's see if this will work now. Well I had a terrible day at work, got very overwhelmed & angry. Went in the bathroom & took deeps breaths & tried some grounding (don't think it helped) I just wanted to cuss out everyone who asked me a dumb question only because they have nothing to do and no life!! Plus my coworker has a b/f & is now not doing her work which makes it all worse.
@JimHallowes There is no link. I have had to study autism and there is no link. HSP can and do have social skills where has Autistic people do have these skills and rarely can develop them. I teach children with autism.
Hi! You are very welcome glad you are glad that I uploaded the clips about HSPs... and "yes" there are over laps with HSPs and SPD, PTS, and ADD, ADHD and others... I just did an in depth interview with Carol Allen on her "Interviews with Enlightening People" series in her "Love is in the Stars" series and I hope to have that available soon too! all the best and thank you for the nice note!
Jim, thanks for putting this on video. You are correct about hsp's, I'm one and also an empath. To tell you the truth, I'd rather not be, it's mostly suffering. But I'm working on grounding and shielding though I don't think it's working or working yet. I'm going to look for your website that I think you mentioned on this video. Thanks for educating people. Peace
I've just researched HSP online for about three hours now, and I keep coming back to this clip. I'm a grade 2 bipolar (meaning, not the most serious case) and I've always felt I was way too sensitive to be 'just' bipolar. Now, all that makes sense.
Also, someone looking at this might be interested in SPD (sensory processing disorder). For me, HSP fits better, though SPD is very similar in a lot of ways. So, really, thank you for uploading this.
this is very enlightening. It explains why i'm always so aware of people's emotions around me and why i compromise my own needs to help others. i'm proud to be sensitive.
This explains SO much I'm 15 years old and I've always wondered why I was so sensitive. I have been since I was a small child. I tend to know when and why people are hiding something or irritated. I tend to cry during any conflict. I always try to aviod scary or violent movies. I really enjoy being alone. And I'm easily stimulated by smells and noise. I felt so alone. Like maybe I was just an overly emotional musician. this helps so much.
This makes me feel so much better. Everyone was telling me that I needed help, that there was something wrong with me, and that no one would ever care about me if I continued to act this way. It was impossible for me to change, because I've always been highly sensitive since I was a small child. I never could understand why people were so cold and how they couldn't feel what I was feeling when I felt sadden.
The book I was referring to is by "Elaine Aaron" The Highly Sensitive Person" I am very gifted in many areas, in Art, music, singing, sports, my GPA is 3.8. I am a people person today, because I know now that I have so much to offer in so many ways. Even more now that I know I am Empathic, something else I felt deep within my soul already. Then it is confirmed by a test that came by email I think, by Michael Smith...
I use to be an introvert in high school. Today because I made an effort to understand myself. He is right about HSP caring about universal justice and doing the right thing. IN 1999 I actuallly found a book on HSP and it was the beginning. Yesterday I took a test to find out what kind of Empathic I am, by Michael Smith. It increased my confidence and answered question that I intuitively knew already, and he just confirmed everything. I am a "Precog Empathic" so true!! What are you?
Amazing. I am 100% an HSP. At least now I know I'm not alone. I thought I was just a martial artist/musician who was extremely perceptive, but I felt that the 'silent me time' made me somehow odd. My real friends understand I need that 'quiet mind' time.
i am an introverted HSP....not a hss........and life is always an uphill battle..........have never understood extroverted people...........seem cold to me
If you haven't already read it I highly recommend Dr. Elaine Aron's book "The Highly Sensitive Person..." and I think it'll explain HSPs and what she calls High Sensation Seeking HSP... extrovert HSPs walk that very fine line between being bored and being way over stimulated... they often seek more stimulation but still sometimes crash and burn when they reach the point where "the straw that breaks the camels back," so to speak. All the best, Jim
I'm an extroverted HSP, and I have a lot of friends who are non-HSP's. I think it's hard for them to understand our sensitivity, but they do appreciate our natural intuition. They recognize the fact that we can sense "trouble" coming way before they can, and tend to ask for our opinion or advice on such matters.
Being a dominant-extrovert HSP involves almost CONSTANT anger toward NSP's. It's shame I live among nsps. Dozens of false guilt conscidence and shame. Willing to become He-Man, almost constant. Dreams, wishes and deeds torn apart and not acknowledged by others. Social skills being wasted. No use...
i am the same way, i read some where it is because our mind uses so much energy focusing and trying to learn things on a larger scale that there isn't much energy left for simplier things like math, does that make sense? it also said over time when the time is right the mind will balance out. peace and love!!
why do you think hsp needs to push so hard . are hsps brains weaker and not resistant to working on regular levels of intensity? I noticed the same thing when I was in high school. While learning my brain was burning hot e.t.c. I decided that learning wasn't for me. At least not serious stuff like math. do you think hsps have brains not suited for accounting, economy, law e.t.c?
Hi Wendy, According to Elaine Aron's book, highly sensitive babies tend to be cooler on the right side of their heads, which is supposed to indicate more activity in the rt brain b/c the blood is leaving the surface and going to the brain. but I am no expert I just found out that I'm an HSP yesterday! lol! It's sooo helpful to know though! totally fits and I feel not alone. love and blessings, Rachel

But deep down i always knew i had brain power, but it doesn't coexist with what i realistically have to achieve.
I kind of feel like i have two sides. Its like i have this big empty space in my brain that just goes wild with thoughts and things.
but when it comes to more acute skills like math i can keep up, but i feel like i have to push so hard.
