"the best built north american cars" is not a rather convincing claim. poor jackie for having to lie about it, but props for doing what he had to do to earn a living lol.
I had an '87 Tempo in '89. I loved driving that car. Little mitsubishi motor in it finally died the umpteenth time I tested the rev-limiter. The ride felt really 'euro' for the time in North America. The only downside was it needed monthly repairs. Just silly stuff. Heater core, sensors, fuel pump. Maybe if i didn't abuse it..
If I hosted on Top Gear USA, I'd have a challenge involving this car, in one way or another. Not to make it look good, but to show just how rubbish the silly thing probably is. :)
if any of these were still on the road I would love to see it get critically "demolished" on a "Top Gear" type show. This car begs to have someone behind the wheel and declare it excrement on wheels, with the scene changing right as the chosen word to describe the excrement starts to come out of the reviewer's mouth.
Look at those beady little eyes telling everyone "Ford motorcars are the best in the whole wide world. And I'm not just saying that because Ford Motor Compay paid me ten million dollars to say so."
Blood pressure rising. Forehead, perspiring. Vision blurring. Smell oil burning It comes without warning Day, night, or morning When the Tempo appears too late to steer clear. Hear tires screeching. Can't tell if I'm breathing I'm going to die but the Tempo drives by. A ghost on a mission with 4 banging pistons because the Angel of Death drives a White GLS
not sure what they were like in the 80's, and i don't think Ford purposely did it. I had a 94 Topaz(same thing just with Mercury badges) with the V6 and they surprisingly handle extremely well in all weather conditions and at high speeds once you replace the crap factory tires, better yet the wheels and tires. not too many cars I've had can do 60-70mph on a tight highway offramp. the light weight helped them out a lot. doesn't make it a driver's car though...
pretty much all early 80's cars where rubbish. the corvette had cease fire injection till 84. the turbo trans am was a dog. the cadiliac cimeron.the fastest GM car was a buick V6 .stopped making those due to being faster than the vette TPI engine.
As a previous (and never again!) Ford owner, I have to agree. I had a '95 Taurus. Worst car I ever saw or heard about. Ford couldn't build a snowman after a blizzard.
oddly enough, big difference between tempo's and taurus... the taurus was too heavy and clunky, even though it shared the same transmissions and engines.... as much as they are "beater" cars like civics, camry's and other cars they pulled themselves out with the "import revolution," the tempo/topaz was a good car... just not stylish... back then they only Ford to get praise and mods was the Mustang
Looks like Jackie licked the slime out of the asshole of the highest bidder for a dollar. But I will say that I bought one of these from a used car dealer with mirror sunglasses when my Chevy S-10 died in the desert. That little Tempo had 120000 miles and served me well for another 40000 miles all around Kalifornia until the the tranmission quit. It was the best 800 dollars I've ever spent. That is why I buy nothing but Ford products now.
Boy do I ever miss my old Tempos. I had an '87 and later a '94. Make fun all you want, but they really do handle superbly in wet and dry conditions. Extremely reliable in my experience, too.
Wow. Jackie Stewart really sold his soul to Ford. I had a 80s Tempo. It would overheat, even while it was snowing, constantly break down and some of the inside paneling literally fell off. This car put me off American cars forever.
My first car was a tempo. My brother and two older cousins all drove it as their first car. By the time i got, it looked like a demo derby car. I hated it--and tried to kill it several times. Aside from needing a new alternator belt every month, that was very sturdy car.

Jackie Stewart, what a loser. Anyone who endorses a Tempo (short for temporary) as a real drivers car is a corporate sell out.

We had these as our cars in Driver's Ed when I took it back in 1984. They weren't horrible to drive, but geez were they ugly!
It was just a few years later though that Jackie was pimping "the new Ford Taurus".

Haha, I had a 94 Tempo in drivers ed, just last year. The company makes the driving instructors use their own cars.

Could be worse though, apparently in the early 1960s Stirling Moss offered endorsement to the Bond THREE-WHEELER!!!
