But I agree, lakeside doesn't seem like it's gonna be open much longer. That park is declining and it's losing it's historical value because all the older rides and attractions are closing down.
That's the only real rollercoaster they have left and it's slowly falling apart...
The rest of the rides are spinning carnival type rides:'(
hey AdrenalineAddict610 i was on this roller coaster the same night...they fixed it...i rode it....if that really happened...they must have one heck of a mechanic crew!
Cyclone had a major accident while I was on it today: The hitch betwen the 3rd and 4th car came detached, and the hitch slammed and jerked the train at the bottom of every drop.
I frequently take my dog to the dog park right across the street from the Cyclone and yesterday and today (August 1, 2) was the first time all summer I've seen someone working on it.
The fact it's being repaired gives me hope they don't plan on closing the park anytime soon.
I've been visiting Lakeside since the early 60's, and have never been to the new Elitch's.
My biggest fear is that Lakeside wont live for many more years. THey cant seem to keep their rides maintained well enough, and its truelly sad that their newest ride is technically a carnival ride.
I actually called them about it today, i was concerned as well becuase it was not operating on thier opening day last week. They said something about the wheel bearing being screwed up and that the train was not making it up the second hill, but that they are doing maintenance and it should be up and running in the next week or two... I doubt they would close the cyclone, simply becuase they would lose a TON of buissness with its demise!
my school does lakeside night once a year since i was like itty bitty soooo im just waiting for this rollar coater to have to be taken down its soooo old (still fun) but when your turning and hearing the wood crac yea it gets a little scary!
Lakeside was a great place to go years ago. I remember the old funhouse real well. Remember the fat lady out front laughing? The cool slides? Didn't rollercoaster break loose and land in the lake killing some people in the sixtys.Seems I kinda remember something like that happening. It would still be a great place but the mexicans have ruined it,for sure!
Thanks for posting this video! I've rode the cyclone about 20 times a year for about 20 years. It's so cheap to get in Lakeside, and there's often no waiting in line to go on repeat rides, I can't imagine why anyone would pay 3 times more to wait in line all day at Elitch's.
did you know lakeside oppened in 1908 it was called white city then, it then changed names to lakeside the park is still open and is now celebrating its 100th year.... the cyclone is still there and people are still riding it and having fun on it....
did you also know that the Cyclone was built in 1940, top hight is 90 feet, biggest drop is 89 feet, top speed is 55 mph and the length is 2,800 feet. The ride used to be under a min and a 1/2, but now is over 2 (as you can see by the video) from old age :D
also that there was a fire in Dec 0f 73' that took out the pool and a maintenance shop (where the Matterhorn and Flying Duchman are now) Personaly I think it was an arson... but because of the fire and stupid people they demolished the fun house and Moonlight Garndens (the beautiful ball room/skating rink) also the parts to fix the StarRide where in that maintenance shop (there are only 2 in the world, the other is in Vienna) so to this day it does not work, parts being so rare and custom
Elitches was just better at paying off or keeping it hush hush- Lakesides rides are very well taken care of and its SUPPOSED to look "old" and vintage, that is the look Rohda was going for
(Im a bit of a Lakeside nut, spent a whole summer reasurching it, I have more articals than the Denver public library)
the fire happend as rhoda was going to go get married in texas to DR. fish men she was told it burned down rhodas onr kid will someday get the park shes in her 30s rhodas dad bought the park in the 30s from adolf Zang the parks founder when it was called white city
also that in Dec of 73 there was a fire that burnt down the pool and a maintenance shop. Personaly I think it was an arson... but BECAUSE of that fire they had to demolish the fun house and the beautiful ball room (where the Matterhorn and Flying Duchman are now) due to fire codes, they said if the tower would have caught, the whole park would have went (being the roller coaster would have caught after that) Lakeside is SAFE, no one has ever died there- infact ELITCHES is far worse they are just
Hi, pureimagination. A few years ago, I was as fanatic about amusement parks as you. Lakeside in Denver was a fascination of mine too! I researched everything about it, through newspapers, library, and the web. I even had a website about the park! Through much of my research I learned that there were several fires at Lakeside. But according to Rohda, The funhouse was torn out due to the many insurance claims it had against it. There were too many people injuring themselves...continued...
continued... the funhouse was taken out mainly for insurance reasons. According to one source, Rohda said, out of all the attractions in the park, it was the one with the most insurance claims against it. She didn't want to, but for the best interest of the park she thought it best if it were gone. As far as nobody dying at the park, well that is not entirely true. But it wasn't the parks fault, somebody stood up on the Cyclone and fell to his death. Maybe you have some info I don't know about.
Ok, one last post and I'll shut up! To pureimgination, sorry if I sound like I am doubting you. I'm not. You researched the park just like me. In my extensive search of the park I happened across a little booklet on Lakeside Park. Found it in the Historical section at the Arvada Libray. It was the mother-load of all references to the park. I learned much of the parks history and every organization that ever owned Lakeside. You might have info even I do not have. I'd Love to hear from you.
the ballroom was back where the rollcoaster is the pool is where the rides are now in the front there is still the base of the ballroom and the rivira club still stands but closed
i went on that it was my first one.

They Cyclone is currently not operating for maintenance. The owners are fixing it up in anticipation of its 70th birthday celebration next year.

Lakeside has removed all references to this ride from their website. Does anyone know if it's no longer operating?
