It matters not what style, karate is karate. You can look at anything and say it is not proper or ineffective, but you will not know until you shut out ignorance and open the mind and heart. Therein lies the beauty of karate.
the arms and standing don't seem coordinated..just look at the first couple of movements..Its my understanding that the hands and feet must be together..
if I wrong ok..but explain this to my teacher..I've studied for 25+yrs.together or no strength..did I miss something?
@dkenny Actually, feet must go a fraction of second before hands, because you need to first create a stable stance in order to get power and strenght. The first movements are done slower, that's why this difference seems greater. Also, those movements are actually joint locks and throws, that in order to be effective need a very strong stance. It is completly useless to do Karate techniques if you don't have a good stance, that's why feet go first.
The way he does his kata is strong yet flowing, without the feeling of stiffness and perfect timing and breathing. those who compare him to other competition fighters are just dumb. some of the competition karateka only use strength and speed, while not focusing on the flow of the kata and making the kata seem robot-like
Karate, Krav Maga, Muay Thai, and all kind of martial arts or fighting methods, it takes time yo understand and know hoew to fight.
I have been practicing for 33 years Karate, I have practiced Jujitsu (that I don't like it, and is not for me), I practiced Aikido, I know Krav Maga that the bases are on Judo and Karate, and you need time, your body needs to learn the movements is not just watching how to do that.
No offense meant to anyone. I just think that karate is an art, and not an effective fighting style. And by think, I mean this is fact. in terms of FIGHTING, not martial arts, 5 years of karate is the equivalent to about 3 months of Krav maga, a year of Muay Thai, and 6 months of BJJ. That's just how it goes. Karate takes a lot of dedication and skill. But even karate masters aren't inherently good at fighting, quite the opposite. They're great martial artists but terrible fighters.

there is a difference..might take some time to understand.
I think he's JKA..he's Kata is very good, but I see some basic timing issues? shouldn't the arm/hands land at the same time as the hips? this might be JKA/SKA difference.
I would suggest the first is done with mostly the correct timing but not speed. the 2 up blocks before the last are slow. the first udeuke doesn't seem coordinated with his hips? and slow.
People making comments such as 'it is too slow' don't appreciate that Shotokan kata have *evolved* and continue to change. There is no such thing as a single correct kata performance that will please all people at all times. Try *understanding* why Kanazawa Sensei performs it the way he does rather than say why it is not consistent with what you have been taught.

I do agree with what most people are saying. I'm sorry, but I don't believe that most of us have any right to criticise Kancho Kanazawa. He is a 10th Dan, and a complete karate legend. So in short, he is NOT too slow
@Coocey only a dumb ass -sport kata - practicioner would call Shihan Kanazawa "slow" i think he is the true master of timing and correct stance. How many of those modern "fast kata" practicioners like Valdesi win in both kata and kumite? (kanazawa did it many times) that's because they modify stances and techniques so they look more like acrobatics.
@soparamens i agree, i mean its how one use the move efficiently, i personally believe that a true karateka pictures multiple attackers in doing a kata, i one only focus on the moves and the speed of the execution then that would be more of a dance than a kata
@Archfiend1900 muscle memory from practicing alone is foolhardy at best, and suicidal at worst. If you're up against an attacker who is NOT using attacks you imagined you're screwed. What happens when the person you're fighting isn't calmly and gently using karate moves in a controlled setting, instead applying a ground game such as Judo or BJJ? Practicing alone will leave you unprepared, and ultimately easily beaten. (not that I think practicing karate with a partner does any good either tbh)
@rivaltuna ok i understand your concern, and if you think its 99% useless, i respect your opinion, but i NEVER mention that you can be prepared by ONLY practicing kata , you do know that karate is not just kata, and true that i cant predict what attack is coming, but i would get and idea where its going, but in real life there r no rules, yes i can be put into an armlock, or get flipped by a judoka, but i can also gouge eyes, hit groins, strike joints and so on, real life is different
@rivaltuna but lets not trash each other, the purpose of karate is not to be the best fighter in the world, its to PROTECT YOURSELF and OTHERS (at least thats why i learn it), i dont need to be number one in the world, i am satisfied with being able to protect my love ones
@Coocey : I totally agree with you ! this Youtube chain isn't there to prove us the karateka is good, but to help us making these katas. So just thank him not to do it at the REAL fast.
Why are people posting comments like 'too slow' and 'this part was wrong' ? Kanazawa has been training longer, has more experience and is a higher grade than anybody posting here, if not on all of Youtube.
Kancho Kanazawa 10th Dan is not to slow.He has advanced the method of Kata with the correct breathing and timing.Kancho Kanazawa 10th Dan is one of the best Kata teachers.Only the people who knows him and studied under him will understand.Only the second part of the kata is for training purpose. The first part is done at the correct timing and speed.
Budokan and shotokan are very much alike. the way they structure their moves are different in ways. the teaching is the same though. every sensie(teacher) has a different way of teaching though. I do budokan but its very simular to shotokan.
well, the sensei(teacher) understand every move different, they all know how is a block or attack made, but if they think that a move should be made stronger,or slower, they will make it like that...it's not wrong, it's just the view of the sensei, but if u do a kata, and you mix 2 sensei's teachings, than the kata is wrong...
Overall a great series. Critisizers, put up some vids. If not.....point will not be taken.

What I find amazing about this video is that even when he does the kata slowly you can still hear how precise and crisp his movement is.

One thing is box, karate is a study of movements.
I don´t care about Mike Tyson, Box is a sport, Karate is an art.
Even if you want to be a good boxer you have to train for years.
You need the technics, box is not only punch, is technic, force, elasticity.
I don`t know anybody who trained for 3 or 4 years and is a good fighter.

@rivaltuna the muscle memory from practicing, the mental picture of enemies while doing the kata comes in handy
by the way, you don't need to strictly follow the technique in performing bunkai(kata application)

I had many fights in the street and I finished those fights with only one punch or one kick.
If you are going to fight with karate knowledge you don't need to play, just one punch and that's it.
I have practicing karate for 33 years, aikido for 9 months, jujitsu and judo (seminars), courses of self defense.
Let me tell you that karate helps a lot to understand all the movements.
